Coveside Waterfront Secluded Cottage on Seal Cove

People who stay with us comment on the peace and beauty of the place. Some relax on the porch and listen to the wind in the trees. Others spend their days out on walks in the area, or go for drives around the beautiful peninsulas of mid-coast Maine.
The cabin was remodeled in 2010 with a new kitchen, an additional bedroom, and an updated bathroom. There is a large living room with a fold-out couch and a single bed for guests. We have purposely avoided bringing in cable or TV, and the sound system is minimal so you can enjoy the nature around you. You can walk to water's edge in seconds, and put your kayaks in for a paddle around the Cove or out to the Damariscotta River.
Each bedroom has a double bed, closet, and bureau. The great room has a sofa bed, soft chairs, and a dining area for six. The bathroom has a full tub and shower.
Seal Cove is teeming with wildlife and you'll have a great view of the seals and waterfowl from the bench in front of the cabin.
Most of our guests have been returning for years. It is a very special place.

What an incredible little cottage- It exceeded all of our expectations. We were looking for a peaceful get a way and this cabin fit the bill. The owners have thought of every detail to make their guests comfortable- they even supply all of the lobster tools needed! Our highlights included: Many candlelight meals on the screen porch Kayaking with the seals right out of the backyard Every sunset was stunning Very comfortable beds And so many more... We got to meet Gordon, one of the owners and is such a nice man. I wish our schedules had aligned so we could have shared a beer. Looking forward to returning again and we are still talking about what a special place it is.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway, adventure seekers.
Owner response: Sheila and I are looking forward to your return and let's be sure to have that beer together next time. The microbrews up here are fantastic!

My husband and I have been vacationing in this adorable and charming cottage on Seal Cove for over 10 years. I can't say enough good things about it. It was updated in 2011 but is still rustic and charming; the location -- 50 feet from the water -- is dreamy; the owners are great and lots of fun; and it's a good base for visiting mid-coast Maine and beyond. Seal Cove, off the Damariscotta River, has it all: kayaking, sailing, lobstering, swimming, watching gorgeous sunsets, and leaving your cares behind. Hiking trails are nearby. South Bristol's lobster pounds will cook up succulent lobsters for you. Damariscotta is 15 minutes away and offers great shopping, restaurants, art, book store, markets, etc. There's a nice little golf course nearby, too. We're totally smitten!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway, adventure seekers.
Owner response: No - we didn't pay these people to write the review. And yes - it's all true. Especially the part about the owners. Come find out for yourself!!

We have stayed at the Seal Cove cabin for 2 summers in a row and it quickly became our favorite family spot. It's so peaceful and you can't beat the fresh Maine air! Our children loved throwing rocks down at the water's edge and became entralled by the mystic of fairies in the area. We love Pemaquid beach and the Maine Botanical Gardens- lots of great destinations close by. The owners are so lovely and the cabin is very clean, cozy and has everything you need!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children.
Owner response: What is it about those mystical fairies? It seems as though they show up every summer in our woods and build wonderful houses with twigs, leaves, pebbles and shells. Though we've never seen the fairies, we know they are there. Who else could be building those fairy houses? PS: did we happen to mention that Sheila is an artist?

My family and I stayed here several times. The cabin is a gem, with perfect furnishings, lovely art on the walls, a complete (not the usual bare bones) kitchen, and plenty of overall comfort if you hit a rainy day. The photos are accurate, but the reality is even lovelier. The lawn slopes down to the cove 50 yards away, and the water's close enough that you can sit in the peace of the evening and hear the seals bark. The owners are very responsive but not in your face. I used to say that the only problem with this place was having to leave it - so we bought our own cabin. That's why we don't vacation there any more, but I still miss it.Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway, adventure seekers.
Owner response: As with many of our guests, we became friends with this family and were thrilled that they chose to purchase a home near us. We could visit more often, even though we lost our tenant. Please note that the date of stay is incorrect - this was a past summer guest - but we appreciate the great review. Also - the water may be 50 yards away at low tide, but it's a lot closer when the tide is in!

Year Purchased: 1997
About the owner: Sheila and Gordon live in Santa Barbara, California for 9 months a year, and in South Bristol for 3. Their grown daughters live in California but come to South Bristol every summer, as they have for the last 21 years. Gordon is COO of a software company in Goleta, CA; Sheila is an artist who sells her work in Damariscotta, just a few miles from the cabin. We've been married since 1976, have been living in the same house since 1979, and have had the property in Maine (next door to the cabin) since 1991. While change is good, good things don't have to change.
Why the Owner Chose South Bristol:
We fell in love with the South Bristol area quite by accident. We were on our way home from a vacation on North Haven Island when we turned off Hwy 1 at Damariscotta. Three months later we owned the property on Pine Bluff Lane and have spent some time there every summer.
The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
What we love most about the area is that it provides peace and quiet when you want it, and yet there is plenty to do all around. Whether hiking (or walking on the trails nearby), fishing, boating, kayaking, or shopping and visiting the many restaurants nearby, there's something for everyone.
