Exceeded all our expectations!

We cannot overstate just how much we enjoyed our time at Aloha Lani. We were on the Big Island for 3 weeks and spent the second week on the East side of the island. It was such a nice break from the touristy west side of the island for us and we couldn't think of a better place to stay than Aloha Lani. The garden and the house are breathtakingly beautiful. We enjoyed it so much more than many of the 'fancy' hotels that we have stayed in before on the West side. We had a group of 4 staying at the house (early 30's) and the accommodations at the house were great - we had everything we needed for the four of us and had plenty of space and solitude to enjoy the beautiful oasis that surrounds the house. We all absolutely loved it and can't wait to come back soon.

Beautiful peaceful setting with lovely hosts

My husband and I spent three nights at Chad and Sue's rental home, and will be back! Though just the two of us this time, it would be ideal for a family or two couples - great kitchen, outdoor grill, open living space. Quiet area, wake up to lots of bird chirping rather than car noise. In addition to the lush landscaping, our favorite attraction was the hosts - they provided great tips on beaches/hikes/local restaurants to try, and are genuinely nice people. Check out the farmers market in town on Tuesday nights for great local food and music, go snorkeling at the tidal pools and hit the warm springs for a unique experience. And plan to spend a day ot two at the Volcano Natl Park, an easy day trip from here.

I visited with two childhood friends in late September 2011. It has taken me so long to write as I've not wanted to admit I'm not there anymore! This was my first trip to Hawaii and I found the perdect hous and location here at Aloha Lani. The house was spacious and the grounds lovely and well-kept. Chad and Sue were very helpful, there if we needed them, but also allowing us the privacy of the setting. The location is fantastic for being away from the resort atmosphere but close enough for day trips to Volcanoes (Kilauea at night!), Mauna Kea (STARS!!) as well as Hilo Farmers' Market and the Botanical Gardens, and the funky little town oh Pahoa (16 miles) where there's restaurants, a great natural food store, used books, antiques, coffeehouse. We had an amazing stay and will definitely be back! Mahalo, Chad and Sue! Sharyn and co.

A Perfect Honeymoon

Guest: Betsy (Shoreline, WA)
Date of Stay: 09/06/11 Review Submitted: 12/15/11

We came to the big island to enjoy privacy and tranquility in a lush and beautiful setting, and this home suited us perfectly! The house was clean, comfortable and well stocked with everything we needed for our stay: dishes, linens, etc. The property was magical -- we felt like we were living in our own botanical garden, surrounded by a variety tropical plants on three well-tended acres. The running water comes from a catchment, so you can't drink it. Drinking water must be brought in and garbage carried out. While we were there, both the telephone and internet were not working and we could not get Verizon cellphone service, so the pay phone at neighboring Kalani was our only connection to our kids on the mainland. But presumably things are working properly now. During our stay we went snorkeling at the Waiopae Tidepools in Kapoho, walked on the acres of lava rock to the new beach at Kalapana, visited the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens just north of Hilo, and drove the saddle road to the west side of the island to swim at Hapuna Beach. We would stay here again, and recommend it to anyone who wants a true getaway.

Owner response:We have updated to a faster more reliable internet service. Now There is streaming Netflix, News, ect. on the TV. We now provide our guest with Phone service that has free long distance to US and Canada. ATT cell works at the house but Verizon does not. We are very happy to have this new service. Our guests can now stay connected with High Speed Internet.

Great Home - but very remote

Guest: KK (Oklahoma City,OK)
Date of Stay: 08/24/11 Review Submitted: 08/30/11

Me and my wife spent 4 days/3 nights at the Aloha Lani. The property is very nice and clean. The house is located in a tropical setting , the orchard surrounding the property is amazing. We spent a lot of time just walking around the landscapes. I travel a lot for my living, spending over a 100 days in hotel rooms - this property is very different from any other place I have stayed at. There are a couple of reasons I didnt give it 5 stars (I would rate it at 3.5). Both the telephone and Internet were not working when we were there. This is a pretty remote part of the big island - my cell phone worked from the lawn - the signal was not strong enough for data. We had to go to the Kalani resort to get internet access. Hopefully this was a temporary situation. The property is in a very remote part of the big island - not very convenient for exploring. Most of the sightseeing places are either on the east or west coast. To get to anywhere, we had to first drive to Route 11 (25 miles - 40 mins) and then drive to our ultimate destination. The closest gas station and grocery stores are in Pahoa. The biggest attraction is of course the volcano park. The park is probably just about 10 miles as the crow flies. However there are no roads to get there. Its about a 48 mile drive from the property to the volcano. Overall, great property, but a very remote.

Owner response:As stated above Aloha Lani is located in a rural and unspoiled area of the Big Island. This is why most guests stay with us. They are looking for a place to get away, slow down and relax in paradise. The coastline, which is 800 ft. from our house has lots of adventures awaiting to be enjoyed without driving very far. Because the Big Island covers a large area it is always a good idea to familiarize yourself with a map of it before making your plans. Unfortunately we did experience a temporary interruption with phone service and internet, this was unusual and not the norm.

Great Hawaii Getaway

Guest: <3 Hawaii (Denver, CO USA)
Date of Stay: 07/23/11 Review Submitted: 05/19/12

This was a great place to stay during our family vacation to Hawaii. We stayed here for four days and at a hotel in Kona for 4 days but wish we would have spent our entire time here. This is a bit out of the way which made this a VERY relaxing place to stay. We went to Volcanoes National Park and to Hilo often which was a beautiful drive. I would suggest Kapoho Tide Pools for snorkeling as we found that to be much better than the Kona area. The kitchen was well stocked with anything you need to make a meal, bathroom was nice and roomy, good breezes during the night and beautiful yard around the house. If you are looking for a relaxing Hawaii vacation, this is the PERFECT place to stay; away from all the hustle and bustle. We had no issues with payments or with getting our security deposit back as it was very quick! If you have the opportunity, do not pass this place up!

This house far exceeded our expectations. It was immaculate, spacious, welcoming, private, convenient.... This was an amazing retreat for us when we visited this side of the Island for the first time. Within minutes of amazing private beaches, lava tide pools, hot spring ponds and unparalleled beauty. The owners are lovely people who generously shared all the knowledge of the local spots with us, and made sure our accomodations were comfortable. The 3 acres of lush landscaping and ocean views afforded privacy and beauty that is definitely calling us back. We highly recommend Aloha Lani!

The tropical retreat is really as described. A beautiful setting with tropical trees, cool breezes and birds singing. The house is large and well furnished, lots of large windows to see all the gardens and trees. The setting is remote, good access to the coast, not too far from Volcano National Park, this suited my daughter an myself just fine for the three nights we stayed. Too bad we did not have more time to spend here.

My husband, myself, and two daughters just spent a few days at this beautiful home and property. We had researched well the area and spent time exploring this part of Hawaii including hiking out to the lava flowing into the ocean (we did a pay a local guy to do this), hiking the Kilauea Iki Crater at Volcanoes, swimming in the thermal waters and hanging out on the Kalapana black sand beach. The food was great at the end of the road cafe and we did enjoy the hot tub and swimming pool at night next door. The house was very clean, comfortable in many ways, and the girls did spend each morning grazing the fruit trees and exploring the garden. They loved the swing overlooking the ocean. We would definitely recommend this place. Thanks Chad and Sue!

Wonderful Retreat

Guest: Bob (Kailua, Hawaii)
Date of Stay: 09/22/10 Review Submitted: 09/28/10

We enjoyed our stay at this very pleasant, tropical retreat. A great alternative to higher priced B&B's and vacation rentals in Volcano. The drive to and from Volcano is easy. And being close to Kalapana allows for early morning or late evening viewing of the lava flows. The nearby warm springs and tide pools are superb. The owners are very helpful. Overall highly recommended.

Thoroughly enjoyed our time at Aloha Lani. Our hosts were very hospitable, giving us tips on local attractions and activities, as well as sharing their fresh produce from the property. Picking a fresh pineapple for breakfast was a treat. Beautiful setting amid all the trees and plants, with ocean just across the road. Nearby tidepooling, swimming, pounding surf and, of course, lava viewing. Loved volcano hiking, the black sand beach and sightseeing around Puna and Hilo.

Great home in the rainforest - Update

Guest: beanand (Philadelphia, PA)
Date of Stay: 04/16/10 Review Submitted: 05/27/10

We were saddened to report that the owner withheld part of our deposit. He claimed that a cloth chair was stained with oil (or something oil-based) and could not be removed. Though we can't decidedly prove it one way or another, we would have appreciated a phone call before receiving part of the deposit with only a small note describing the damage. I would highly suggest that anyone staying here do a walk-through with the owner before checking out.

Owner response:We go out of our way to be fare to all of our guests. As you can see all of our reviews are 5 star. We did email a full description of what we found and what we did to try to fix the damage. There was a lot of time spent on trying to get out the oil stain but we will have to replace this seat cover and maybe all of the covers to get a match. Apparently, they were not satisfied with our explanation when we held back a small part of the security deposit. We would be very happy to send you a copy of their original review about there stay with us, before they were charged. Aloha Chad and Sue

Rural relaxation

Guest: BronxNapster (Bronx, NY)
Date of Stay: 04/03/10 Review Submitted: 06/27/10

This house was comfortable and very well-maintained by an excellent host. We loved staying here but it was somewhat indescribeable. It is a wonderful place as long as you realize what you are getting yourself into. This is just about as rural of a place as you could image on the island. It is very laid back and relaxing but it is FAR from being at a resort. It was a fun adventure and a very unique vacation. You will be driving a lot to go places but it was all part of the charm. The '60s commune style "resort" next door was fine for what it is but it's not what everyone may be used to. Get yourself a map and explore the many hidden treasures around but look carefully because most things are not marked well. All the real tourist stuff is hours away on the other side of the island but this side of the island has much to be appreciated albeit not as easily as a major resort. I would only go here if I was the type to do a lot of things all day or if I wanted a lot of peace and quiet staying in a lovely home with great beauty about it.

WOW! We had SUCH a great time. Entering the property after dark was like entering Jurassic Park. The size of the flora and fauna was mind boggling. The home was immaculate and just perfect for us. Watching the sunrise over the ocean was just a short walk to an amazing swing with our coffee cups in hand. I also recommend the Hawaiian ice cream available next door (just a walk away) until 10pm at the Kalani resort. yummmmmmmmm We couldn't have asked for a more magical place or more gracious hosts to celebrate our mother's 70th birthday. We'll be back!

We stayed at Aloha Lani in December, 2009. The house is beautiful and impeccably clean. Chad and Sue are gracious and welcoming. The setting is gorgeous, just steps from the ocean and a few miles from where the lava meets the sea. We felt immensely fortunate to have found this place. It was a wonderful base from which to explore the eastern side of the Big Island and the volcanoes national park. We hope to return in the future.

This is a clean and comfortable home. We stayed for four days but wish that we had four more days. The snorkeling was the greatest about eight miles up the shore line... all kinds of fish, warm waters heated by the lava beneath the pools and protected from the surf with coral reefs and large lava formations. Other ocean activites are nearby. Oh yes, the orange tree near the driveway has the sweetest oranges. Chad and Sue are gracious hosts. We were very fortunate to find a large clean home with a large country acerage for our use. Thanks Chad and Sue!

A Relaxing Vacation in Kalapana

Guest: Bob (Gaithersburg, MD, USA)
Date of Stay: 10/27/09 Review Submitted: 08/15/10

Our stay at Chad’s place far exceeded our expectations. The house is immaculate throughout and very nicely appointed in a comfortable casual style. The grounds are amazing with the wide variety of tropical plants which are all so well cared for but in a natural setting and arrangement. One of our favorite times of the day was in the morning, sitting out on the lanai, enjoying fresh papayas from one of the local farmers markets while taking in the beauty of the gardens and listening to the distant surf. Chad and Sue are great hosts, making sure that we had found everything and giving us a quick tour of the facilities next door at the Kalani Oceanside Retreat. We found the pool, whirlpools, and sauna great for relaxing after a day of hiking, snorkeling, or other explorations of the Big Island. While the house is nicely secluded and very quiet, Pahoa is a short drive away for supplies and they have some great restaurants. I would highly recommend Chad’s place for anyone visiting the eastern side of the Big Island and can’t wait to return soon.

Living in a tropical botanical garden

Guest: beverlyrosey (Sonoma County, California)

We had a wonderful 11 day stay at Chad and Sue's. It's the ideal location for participating in Kalani activiies, their pools and their awesome organic meals. In additon, it's a hop, skip and jump the the Black Sand Beach, the warm pools on the Red Road and close enough to Pahoa to get groceries and cash when you need it. The other wonderful thing about the property, besides the most beautiful tropical scenery ever is the peacefulness there. The property is on one of the more isolated areas of the Big Island, the PUNA coast. That brings a sense of calm and retreat from the rat race of the mainland and even other parts of Hawaii. I love it there and will be returning every year until I can actually move there. The house is charming with simple lines, pristinely clean with all the conveniences and ammenities without overpowering the surrounding natural environment, icluding a great media system, TV, and internet hookup so you can stay connected to the everyday life back home - if you want You could even telecommute while you are there. Chad and Sue are excellent host and hostesses. They understand how to be welcoming and there for you if you need anything without interfering with the solitude I find there. I always return back to California calm, tan, happy-go-lucky and with a renewed sense of uplifted spirit. And my favorite thing about the house, is the tiled floors - always cool to the feet . The house never gets too hot, even on hot days. Lovely ceiling fans and lots of screened windows keep the air fresh and cool. The trade winds and the cool ocean spray in the air, keep the whole area truly comfortable. The climate is perfect. Thank you Chad and Sue! See you next summer - I hope!

a week of total relaxation and FUN

Date of Stay: 05/22/09 Review Submitted: 06/02/09

My husband, adult son and myself recently spent a week at Chads Place. Our purpose for this trip was to look for property in the Hilo & Pahoa area and also take a much needed vacation at the same time. This vacation rental is in the perfect location on the coast. We sat outside in the morning drinking our coffee, smelling the wonderful fragrance of the beautiful tropical landscaping, listening to the birds and watched the local wildlife, then we would take a walk along the ocean, and I must mention watching the shooting stars at night. Everything we needed and liked to do was within 15-20 minutes walk or drive away, the tide pools to snorkel in, warm swiming pond, black sand beach, Valcano, the Lava flows, dinning and shopping in Pahoa & Hilo. At the end of the road is a store, cafe, and the friendliest little outdoor bar I've ever been to. The house itself was great, very clean, big bathroom, the beds were comfortable, great kitchen , washer & dryer, and a nice media room for the rare times we used it for watching TV. The hosts Chad and Sue are delightful. We plan on being regular guests. I will recommend Chads place to everyone.

We stayed at the home in Kalapana in mid-May for one week. Once you're on the property you are virtually alone. Although the owners live on the property, they are very respectful of your privacy. We hardly saw them unless we were asking for advice. You don't see other homes from the property, just the lush tropical green that makes HI famous and a wonderful ocean view. We were in paradise. We went to sleep to the sounds of frogs and woke to the sounds of birds. Very relaxing, very quiet and very together house. Great for people who want to get away from it all! You avoid the tourist destinations and feel like your experiencing HI they way in use to be. And, romantic too!

We had a wonderful stay at Aloha Lani and would definitely recommend this property. The house is very clean and welcoming, located in the jungle like setting among flowers, coconut and papaya trees, which makes it secluded and private. We loved the close proximity to Kalani Resort (literary about 10 steps away), where we had delicious buffet-style healthy breakfast (kids eat free) a couple of times. The house has everything to satisfy traveler's needs - nice sheets, fully equipped kitchen, two sitting areas - upstairs and downstairs. Lots of windows make it light, bright and airy. Our stay was so enjoyable that we will definitely are coming back!

We truly enjoyed our stay in this georgeous property. The grounds were beautiful, the house spacious and super clean. We especially enjoyed the privacy, the quiet, the spacious and nicely furnished kitchen, the luxurious towels and bedding. We enjoyed visiting Kehena Beach, swimming in the thermally heated ocean pool and viewing the lava (which was outstanding). The banana split at the cafe in Kalapana was excellent. Thanks again for the wonderful service. Stan and Billie

Oasis of Calm

Guest: Erin C (Boston, MA)
Date of Stay: 04/15/08 Review Submitted: 04/30/08

The house is situated at the end of a long driveway amidst tropical vegetation and gorgeous flowers. Chad and Lori were there to greet us upon arrival and offered lots of helpful suggestions about sightseeing and local places to eat. Lori brought us next door via the trail directly behind the house to check out the pool and hot tubs at Kalani ($40 per person for a one-week membership, $30 for Hawaii residents) and explained how to turn on the lights at night. The house itself is lovely, with beautiful views of flowers and trees from the upstairs livingroom. We slept very peacefully at night with the windows open and fell asleep to the sounds of the tree frogs. Every evening after returning from exploring the area we relaxed on the chaises longues on the patio outside. A really wonderful way to unwind at the end of the day or to enjoy morning coffee or tea...quiet except for the birds singing, a peaceful tropical oasis. The area itself is breathtaking, especially driving along the coast. Don't miss the lava viewing in the evening and make sure to wear comfortable walking shoes. Verna's drive-in (at the end of the road) stayed open as late as 9:30pm and has great burgers (especially the ahi burger), fries, plate lunches, and ice cream and was a much easier option for a quick bite at night than driving into Pahoa, which has lots of good places to eat. Kehena Beach is just down the road, and other area attractions (Kapoho tidepools, hot ponds, Isaac Hale Beach Park, Pahoa shops and restaurants) are just a quick drive away. We bought groceries at the Malama supermarket in the shopping center just outside Pahoa. There's also a good pizza place there where we got takeout a couple of times. We really enjoyed our stay at Aloha Lani and would recommend it without hesitation.

We enjoyed sitting out in the morning, listening and watching the variety of birds and strolling through all the remarkable fruit trees and flowers. The beautiful smell of jasmine and gardenia that drifts through the bathroom window early in the morning or late at night is a delight to the senses. I recall counting over ten different varieties ranging from fresh bananas, avacodos to mangos. The drive up to the house was always wonderful, because we always were on the look out for the remarkable crane that would greet us in the evening. The location was absolutely wonderful. It is close to the beach and the pool next door at Kalani, yet remarkably private. Your home provided all the convenience and necessities such as private bedrooms, den with T.V. and VCR,phone, microwave, roomy kitchen and living room that made our stay and visit with our daughter absolutely wonderful and relaxing. I also appreciate how wonderful you are to work with and I do look forward to visiting again. Your home easily accommodated the five of us and from here we were easily able to do beach activities at Pohiki, enjoy the red road & Kehena coastline, sight seeing to various parts of the island as well as access grocery or other locations both in Pahoa and Hilo. Again, Thanks Chad for a wonderful stay and all your assistance. You really made our visit wonderful. The privacy of your home on the three acres, yet the convenience to our daughter in Sea View was wonderful. I look forward to talking to you and staying in your Ohana again. Thanks Chad for a memorable time spent with our family. Linda Raemaeker

If serendipity and/or good karma is at play in your life, it is altogether possible that your stay will bring you to this property. In practical terms, it is simply an extraordinary location with its 3 acres sitting right on the Red Road - which is straight out of a postcard, and its immediate proximity to worldclass Kalani Yoga Resort, and of course its easy access to the many wonderful amenities of Puna. In more spiritual terms, the sheer beauty and loving care with which Chad has done the landscaping and gentle interior decor creates a magical environment that stirs soulful memories, present awareness, and creative futures. Bring your mate and your children (my 6 year old girl LOVED it) and be deeply inspired in their faces anew. Aloha John

5 stars for the cleanliness and lack of clutter, huge windows in every room, a large bathroom full of so much natural light I kept thinking I forgot to turn the switch off, fresh flowers on tables, sandalwood soap in the bathroom, and nice little necessities such as saran wrap/aluminimum foil/coffee filters. But most of all it was like our own private Garden of Eden on 3 acres of lush greenery with chirping birdsong at dawn and delightful frogs calls at night. Loved the long treed driveway to the ocean cliffs across the street.

Chad, I just wanted to let you know that our trip to the Big Island was the most relaxing and the most enjoyable vacation we have had in years. You made our stay very delightful. Thanks for sharing your beautiful estate with us. When we return in 2007, we do hope you are still renting because we definately would want to stay there again. We will never forget our first trip up the driveway after dark and wondering "Where in the ---- are we going?" When we got to the end, we were in love with the place and could not wait til morning. Came home showing pics of the area around the house and coastline, everyone was so envious and just loved seeing them. In fact you will see xome of them on computer backgrounds where I work. Again, Mahalo and Aloha, and hope to see you again. I do hope you get a notebook and put this in it so other guest can read it and then put their comments into it also. I always enjoyed reading other peoples fun times and where they are from. Linda Gabriel, Judy Slagle, Pam Scott and Annetta Potter, Claremore, Okla Oct. 2005
