Thank you for the lovely vacation experience at SML. The beach was the best part for the children. Our family felt at home here at the LoveStone

This is a lovely 6 acre property sloping down to the lake (lots of deer), where there is a private beach and boathouse. The house is large and very nice, but filled to the brim with knick-knacks, which makes it feel smaller. The kitchen if fully stocked. The owners are next door, which is convenient if you have a problem. However, the house was run as a B&B until last year; it seems they quit taking much care of the yard at that time (eg. lots of dead plants in the planters). I believe it is for sale now. The lake itself is fantastic, clear water, nice temperature, not too much traffic, and quite large. All in all, an enjoyable vacation.

Our stay at the Lovestone Vacation Villa was very nice. As with any vacation destination, there is good and bad; you can decide on which you'll focus. The good is the house is truly a beautifull B&B Villa that you and your family will enjoy every minute for a week. They bad is the owners are staying in the cottage right next to you. For the most part they respect your privacy, but they showed up a couple times unannounced to "check the hot tub". The good is the 22,000 acre lake with numerous coves and places to swim and picnic (rent a pontoon boat at SML). The bad is the house is on a hill with a steep walk up from the boat dock after a long day on the lake. Older adults and those with young children please note (rent or bring a golf cart. You'll be glad you did). The good is the daily viewing of deer in the back yard. The bad is most of the back yard is not cut. There is a path cut to the boat dock and a gravel road connected to the owners' cottage, both of which you must pass in front of the cottage to utilize, they are not connected to the villa. I recommend you Google Earth this location to ensure you understand its setting. The good is a boat dock for your use with amenities. The bad is the owner's boat is there too and used while you're there. The good is a small but private beach for the small children to use with chairs for the parents, inclusive of a fire pit. The bad -- there is no bad with that. The good is the owners contacted us immediately after departure to let us know we forgot a phone charger. The bad, again, the is no bad in renting from caring owners. Overall we recommend the Lovestone Villa as we had a good time in a very nice location! Consider the noted good and the bad and make your informed decision. Enjoy!

Owner response: We are glad you enjoyed our Villa and 6 acres on Smith Mountain Lake. As a VRBO, we are in residence and maintain the house, grounds and gardens ourselves. Thank you for your comments. Dawn and Tom

About the owner: Dawn Spencer and Tom Zirkelbach moved from the Chicago area in 2003 to open the LoveStone Inn Bed and Breakfast on Smith Mountain Lake. Both had careers with corporations in the Chicago area. After 27 years of the Chicago winters, they choose to semi-retire in the beautiful mountains of Virginia, on this 22,000 acre manmade lake. Dawn's family is from Roanoke and introduced them to Smith Mountain Lake in 1996. It was their goal to enjoy the mild seasons of the mountain lake while running a B&B. Dawn still has a consulting firm. She is responsible for the marketing and customer side of the B&B business. Her passion is cooking and gardening. Tom runs the operations side of the B&B business and enjoys boating and fishing. Their two sons join them at Smith Mountain Lake from Chicago and the D.C. area. They have a Shih Tzu named Pebbles which loves the lake also.
Why the Owner Chose Huddleston:
Dawn’s family is from Roanoke and she watched the lake form in the 60’s. She always felt Central Virginia was “home” and after 27 years “up north”, Dawn and Tom welcomed the peacefulness of the lake area and the activities Smith Mountain Lake has to offer. By having a total of 5 bedrooms, we have always had plenty of room for family and friends. Being 45 minutes from Roanoke and Lynchburg, we have easy access to healthcare, airports (for our traveling bug) and commuter service into the Northern Virginia and DC area. Starting in 2012, LoveStone Inn will become a luxury vacation rental instead of a B&B. Our guest will still enjoy the fabulous amenities LoveStone Inn and Smith Mountain Lake have to offer, just for longer stays.
