  I would stay here every time I visit Japan, no matter what. The location is perfectly central to everything you could ever want to do, be it sight seeing or shopping. The size is perfect, and the atmosphere is calming. Honestly I have no words for how perfect the Machiya house is. I would never vacation any other way. Owners are thoughtful and kind. There was an earthquake during my stay, and I was emailed asking if I was okay. I really hope to give them as much business as possible. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. If you are a couple, there is nothing more romantic than waking up in Gion and walking to the river to share a breakfast. This is the ultimate romantic vacation, to me at least.

  We stayed in this great machiya for 6 days. For three of those days with two adult children. It is near 2 subway stations and a bus depot. It is a short walk to the middle of Gion and the choice of many restaurants. Close to a couple of supermarkets. And it is very quiet. It must be one of the best locations in Kyoto. It is not big (but we are in Japan). It is two storeys. Upstairs is a large bedroom with retreat area. The bed is a very comfortable queen sized western bed. Downstairs has the kitchen, lounge, bath, shower and laundry. The lounge becomes a bedroom when the futon bedding is spread out. The children said the futon is not that comfortable (but we are in Japan and it is Japanese not western sleeping). The kitchen has whatever you need to be self sufficient if you want. We loved this apartment and wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking for an apartment in Kyoto.

  The house matches exactly with what we were looking for. Traditional house, clean, well maintained, close to siteseeing spots.. The house is close to historical GION area, less than 5 minutes' walk to bus stop, grocery store, and to the main GION street. My 4-year-old loves the Japanese Tatami. Being in a neighborhood and being able to see the daily life of local people is a great experience. Meanwhile, it is much more spacious than a hotel. Strongly recommend for travelers with kids or wanting to experience the local culture.

  When we stayed in this house, We felt Japanese wabi-sabi mood. It was like a flow of calm clrear water, but had a strong traditional breeze of Japan. Specially, I liked old desk and chair set on the second floor. They were placed by the window. We sat on that pretty chairs, and enjoyed atomosphere of daily Kyoto for hours. We could charge the energy of Zen,maybe.

  I really enjoyed my stay at this house. It was clean and comfortable. My favorite was the double bed. I could sleep very well. The house was located at quiet resident area, so I felt what Japanese local life is. However, the house was very near to sight seeing area (Gion, Yasaka shrine and so on) and restaurants. I walked around every day and enjoyed many traditional shop near the house.Especially, I was interested in the displays of those shops. Every displays were so beautiful. There were reasonable food and comodities stores( most prise were 100 yen). I often bought my sweets there.

  Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, girls getaway.

  I spend 6 nights in this machiya I am used to stay in Kyoto and i appreciated ver y much the location of this tradional house so closed to shirakawa The house is ver y clean and convinient The owners are charmfull And try to make the best for the guests

  The house was located in local residence and quiet area. But it takes 5 min to shijo street and Yasaka shrine, 8 min to shijo and sanjo station, 1 min to local store. It was very convinient area so much. The house was a clean and histrical house. There was no proble to use light, hot water and aircondition. Although stairs was a little bit steep, double bed was very comfortable. Anyway,It was cosy little house. If we have chance to go Kyoto again, I want to stay one more time.
