An OK Experience
An OK Experience
This was our first time renting a house - somewhat of a disappointment. Think we were expecting a newer interior, more homey feeling. From the pictures it appeared to have a wonderful beach area behind the house that we were really excited about as we had our grand-daughters with us. Thought they would be able to play in the water and we could sit on the beach to watch them. Unfortunately there was construction in that area that made it difficult to get to the water. It would have been good to have know about this before we arrived. Never was mentioned. Large sand bags lined the entire area along the shore. Had to climb on them to even get to the beaches behind the neighbor houses. We did have a beautiful view from the master bedroom window. We never saw the property manager, did talk with him 3 times on the phone. If we had wanted to use the kyaks, wouldn't have been able to because of this. The Cultural Center is only 6 mi north which was really nice. Overall it was OK but nothing really special for us. I definitely like the idea of a house rental rather than a hotel. Will know what to expect a little better now.

Owner response: The west swells with surf up to 50 foot high have been extraordinarily harsh to the North shore and windward side of Oahu this season where multiple structures have been claimed by the swell. Your stay was in the erosive period of the beach, there is a *lot* more sand in the Summer. The State ordered our neighborhood to remove all rocks and debris exposed by the erosion and granted us all emergency permits to place temporary structures (in our case - 3 ton sandbags) to protect our properties from further erosion which got to within 10 feet from our houses. We had blocked out 3 weeks prior to your stay to get all the State ordered work done on the beach and to replace the front fence with a rock wall. That construction is now complete with easy access for portaging kayaks to the water. We ensured that the beach contractors and their equipment were gone and the area was tidy for your stay and apologize for any inconvenience.

Kaina, the on-site contact, is very attentive and cheerful. We like to explore beaches, hikes and botanical gardens and found all within easy driving distance Close to The Plantation in Kaawa where we also celebrated a family wedding. To make your beach experience more comfortable, do bring water shoes or old shoes to get wet since there are enough larger pebbles here and there. It is relatively calm water due to a reef further out which also makes the wave sounds gentle...at least while we were there.

A Gem in Punaluu

Thank you for making our family's mini vacation such a memorable and beautiful experience. We arrived on Friday and was greeted by Kaina. He is so natural, genuine and professional as he guided us through the house and made sure that everything was to our satisfaction. It really isn’t often that an experience exceeds expectations, but your beach home does. Everything from the layout of your home, the fully stocked supplies, spectacular views and beautiful landscape was truly breath-taking. This peaceful haven that you have created will be remembered for many years to come. It is our hope that we will be able to return in the near future and would definitely recommend this beach home to our family and friends. Thank you Max for so graciously accommodating us.

We loved staying here, it was so nice to get up every morning, sit in the yard and watch the sunrise while sitting by the ocean. Plenty of room inside and out. It was fun to take the kayaks out and snorkle around. There was great snorkling a short drive north where we got to swim with the great sea turtles. Would recommend bringing your own snorking gear as the gear at the house is very limited. It was so nice to have all the pans, plates spices etc for cooking, very well stocked kitchen. We highly recommend dining at Turtle Bay Resort, great food, very fresh fish.

What a gem this house was for our stay on Oahu. The rooms are spacious and the house is furnished & stocked with anything you would hope to have. The view was spectacular and the kayaks were great to have for us and our two teenage boys. We took the boys to Waikiki (Hint: Park at the Zoo for $1/hour) because they were certain they were missing some “Hawaii Experience”, but when we returned back to Punaluu they were quick to realize how nice it was to be staying at the house rather than on the hotel/concrete side of the island. Everything we wanted to see/do was no more than an hour drive away, regardless the direction we took and the drive was always very scenic. We highly recommend Kualoa Ranch and the Macadamia Farm. From the moment we started our inquiries on the property until our return back to the mainland we had immediate responses from the owner, as well as from the local property manager while on the island. We would definitely book this location again and highly recommend it to all who are looking for a scenic, quiet, spacious place to stay on Oahu. This experience has spoiled us and sets a high bar for all future VRBO bookings.

We had a wonderful time at this location. It had plenty of room for 4 couples. We would recommend this property to friends or relatives visiting the island. It is nice to be away from the city life. If you want to relax and still be within an hour of anything you want to do, this is what you want. The beach was great for morning walks and it really is just feet from the house. We enjoyed using the kayaks and snorkeling. The house had everything we needed. We went shopping for food so we could cook and barbeque to save on dining expenses. The owner was very helpful and prompt in answering all my questions. Thank you to the personable Kaina for great customer service.

Absolutely love how much space there is.Our family ranging from preteen to senior really liked it. Thank you to the personable Kaina for great customer service.

Perfect for our family!!!!!
Perfect for our family!!!!!
This was a perfect vacation home and setting for our family. (Kids 14 and 11). From the moment we met our new friend Kaina at the house, we knew we made the perfect choice. We feel that with the thousands of rental choices out there, we really lucked out finding this place. Kaina is an all-knowing super-hero that really made us feel welcome. Take advantage of his kayaks!!! We had so much fun on them. The beach is so nice and it really is just feet from the house. We met some of the local neighbors who gave us tips for seeing wildlife and tips about the tides. The Polynesian Cultural Center is only 5 miles up the road, which is good because the last show ends at 9:15pm. I felt sorry for all those who bussed it there from the city.....they had a 30-45 minute ride home. Chinaman's Hat is close too. You will see it when you drive to the place for the first time. That backdrop makes a great Xmas card. Drive north to Turtle Beach. We saw one big turtle basking in the sun on the beach and two more swimming in the water. Don't get to close to them (they recommend staying 6 feet away). We found that out the hard way. A lady told me very sternly, "move away from the turtle". Fun time with the turtles. Kaina recommended that we get to the USS Arizona early to get walk-up tickets, since we did prepare in advance....online tickets were sold out (they are free) until 7/24/13. We got there early and got our tickets...shortly after that all the walk-up tickets were gone. Thanks Kaina!!!! Pay attention to what he tells you - its gold. My wife and kids had a blast (me too). My mother (66 years old) loved it too. She even sat in the middle of a three-man kayak and explored the shallows. We snorkeled and swam for hours all most every day. What a relaxing time. Its so nice to stay right on the beach. This house had a wonderful grassy yard that my kids threw balls around on. They loved that - can't do that at home this time of year in Scottsdale. I recommend this home for anyone wanting to get away from a busy city. We spent time in Waikiki and enjoyed it but how relaxing it was to return to our beach house. The description listed is exactly what you will get, except the house is now blue. The gardening is superb! So many lovely flowers and plants. Way to go "Gardener"!! Thanks to Kaina and Max for making this home available to us. We would love to go back there someday!!!! Abernethy Family

This place is so beautiful. The house is wonderful and has everything you need. Waking up in the master bedroom and looking over the ocean is a great way to start your day. Kaina was great and answered our every question....he is a perfect host. Pete the gardner is such an artist and has wonderful stories to tell. I can guarantee we will be back.

Most Excellent Vacation Beach House! We loved it.
Most Excellent Vacation Beach House! We loved it.
This property is accurately described in the listing. This was my family's first visit to Hawaii. I rented this beach house to celebrate my retirement with my husband, son, daughter-in-law, daughter and son-in-law. The three bedrooms with queen sized beds and three bathrooms provided privacy for each family. The house was very clean, well-maintained and extremely well stocked with dishes, pots and pans, kitchen appliances even a blender for Pina Coladas, linens, furniture, washer/dryer, beach toys, snorkeling gear and kayaks. The owner was very helpful and prompt in answering all my questions. He provided an excellent electronic 38 page information package that thoroughly described not only the house, but popular tourists attractions, places to shop and eat as well. We spent an entire day and evening at the Polynesian Cultural Centre. Four members of my family went deep sea fishing. We visited the Dole pineapple plantation. The drive along the Kamehameha highway provides gorgeous views on the ocean on one side and lush forests and mountains on the other. Oh I had no idea that chickens are wild in Hawaii, what fun that was. A peacock and three peahens are living across the street from the house. The yard is beautifully landscaped with lush grass, colourful tropical plants, coconut trees, palms and tiki gods. Lots of room for parking. My daughter-in-law and I took The Bus to Honolulu to go shopping it cost $2.50 each one way. We went all the way there and back on ten bucks! We had a blast, the beach front view is fantastic. My daughter was snorkeling with sea turtles, the kids all enjoyed kayaking. Every morning I enjoyed a three mile hike along the beach. One morning a local guy was digging up sand crabs to amuse the tourists. Another morning a seal was basking in the sun on the beach about 300 yards from our house. I took photos till the seal went back to sea with the tide. This location is fantastic with an easy walk to the Shrimp Shack. All of us enjoyed the beach, the lovely landscaped yard and the ocean views. We would watch sand crabs scrabbling on the rocks as the tide came in from the comfort of our lawn chairs. The coral reef made our beach perfect for swimming, snorkeling and kayaking it was like having our own private piece of paradise. We spent our last night on the island in a hotel in Waikiki, what a concrete zoo it was compared to this lovely private beach house. ~sigh I miss it already.

Owner response: We are glad you had fun! You did have a rare treat -- the seal you saw was a Hawaiian monk seal, an endangered species of earless seal that is endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. We were there right before you and watched countless whales breaching outside the reef. The wildlife is one of our favorite bennies!
