Best View of All! Modern, Luxurious, Large Condo Near Bavarian
- Minimum stay:1-2 nights
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:Yes
- Wheel chair accessible:No
Situated at over 10,000ft and just a short walk from the Kachina ski lift, the Alpenglow Chalet is waiting to become your family's favorite getaway. One of the newest accommodations in Taos Ski Valley, this vacation property offers *unmatched* views of Kachina Peak and the Sangre de Cristo mountains surrounding the ski area. Thanks to it's height in the valley, sunrise and sunset paints a special glow on the mountains, hence the name "Alpenglow Chalet".
This property has all the extra touches to make your vacation memorable. Downstairs it has two bedrooms and two bathrooms, plus plenty of storage for your outdoor gear. Heated tile floors take the edge off the brisk mountain temperatures and the fire place in the middle of the floor-to-ceiling windows is the perfect setting for a night of stories, cards, and laughs. Also, enjoy the large, flat screen TV recently installed in July 2011. The kitchen is open and has plenty of counter space for cooking big meals for the large groups that fill our condo. Upstairs, you'll find comfortable couches, a TV for DVDs, and dozens of movies and board games- it's perfect for the kids or young adults. Additionally, there is one queen, one standard, and three twin bunks in this spacious loft area.
If you don't feel like cooking, you're in luck! The highly-acclaimed Bavarian Restaurant is our neighbor. You will find delicious homemade German meals and the finest imported beers served in a beautiful and rustic Bavarian lodge. No need to drive, it's just down the trail!
In the summer, the Alpenglow Chalet is the perfect headquarters for all your outdoor adventures. Adjacent trails lead into protected Wilderness Areas and onto the picturesque Williams Lake. Towering above the condo is Wheeler Peak, the highest peak in New Mexico, and a great place to hike. We also neighbor 'Northside', a collection of mountain bike and hiking trails for all skill levels.
During the winter, a short 5 minute walk takes you to the base of the Kachina lift, where you can skip the crowds by putting on your skis or snowboard starting your day on the fresh backside snow! The easy access to and from the condo means you can have a hot lunch in the well stocked kitchen, or sit on the deck and watch your family and friends ski the Kachina bowl and trails.
Roads are well maintained in the summer and plowed in the winter, however chains (available w/ most car rentals) or a 4x4/AWD is strongly recommended in the winter.

We had a group of 9 guys stay for skiing and this was a great place to stay. It was secluded in the woods at the top road near the Bavarian. Its very clean and couldn't have asked for much more from a rental. We had plenty of room and its in a good spot on the mountain, just a short walk (or ski down he road) to the base of Kachina Lift 4. We felt very welcome from the owners, which were very helpful with any questions we had. I would recommend this place and will definetly stay here again. I also recommend paying attention to having a 4 wheel drive vehicle or chains especially with snow in the forecast. It snowed 10" while we were there which made the skiing awesome.Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, adventure seekers, families with young children, pet owners.
Owner response: Bobby- We're excited you guys got to enjoy the fresh powder. (We're also a bit jealous!) There's often a bit more up in our part of the Valley than lower down- always a bonus. I'm glad the property fit all your needs and that you and the guys had a lot of fun up there. Hard to beat those views, eh? I hope you got to enjoy a beer at the Bavarian and that we see you back this summer or next winter. --Rob M

Great view and the property owner has great communication. A little tricky to get to in the winter but once you are there it is an awesome place.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.
Owner response: David- Bring the family back for some more! We're really happy you guys were able to stay in our property and enjoy the rugged views, forested surrounding and great skiing. You're right, the road can be tricky, but hopefully that customized Google Maps page I gave you helped out. Enjoy the rest of the winter and keep us in mind for a summer trip- it's a whole different experience. Cheers- Rob

This property is as described and very nice. We stayed with 2 adults and 3 kids ranging from 11 months to 5 yrs old, and the condo is perfectly suited for that. I tend to agree with earlier reviews that the couches could be upgraded, but in all fairness it did not bother us at all. The place is immaculately clean, and -great for families with small kids- there is not much that can be broken. The place is decorated in a modern fashion, so its spacious, light and generally a very comfortable place to hang out. The kitchen is very well equiped. The views are indeed fantastic. There is unlimited space outside to build igloos and play in the snow; our kids loved it! We dropped off the kids at the Taos ski school @ the base area a couple of days, so we skied from there as well. We had tons of snow first days, so snow tires & chains on our 2WD were a necessity. A 4WD would have been even better, but we managed without. Drive to base is less than 10 minutes. Walking to the Kachina lift/Bavarian is no problem. The Ski school was very good, and the kids enjoyed it a lot. Our 5yr old made very good progress, in just 3 days. To conclude: The condo and Taos Ski Valley come highly recommended! And last but not least: the owner is a pleasure to deal with. Thanks Rob!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, adventure seekers, families with young children.
Owner response: Hein- We're real happy you guys scored such a great snowfall and ski conditions. Getting that high up in the Ski Valley while it's snowing makes for a truly memorable experience, eh?! I'm especially glad to know that the Ski Valley's ski school helped your kids. I hear it's highly rated, so it sounds like they've earned their rating. We're also real happy to hear your kids were outside playing- some people miss out on all the fun of sledding, cave building, exploring, and snow ball fights in all the outdoor space. Come on back again- we'd love to have you guys stay for the summer or next winter. Cheers- Rob

We stayed at the this condo right after Christmas and had a wonderful time. It is all it is advertised to be, which is rare to find. Rob was very helpful and great to work with. The view of the mountain and the snow was spectacular. We will come back to stay at this condo when we are back in Taos as it is clean, well maintained and warm and cozy!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, adventure seekers, families with young children, pet owners.
Owner response: Alison- I almost missed your comments. Shame on me! It was a pleasure working with you. I think you are our first visitors from overseas, which makes me especially happy that the property met all your expectations! We're making upgrades to it this spring, so when you come back, hopefully it'll be even better than before. Best wishes to you guys 'down under' and here's to having you stay with us again sooner than later. Cheers- Rob

This condo is in an amazing location. You must be aware of the high altitude and stay very hydrated. Many of us had headaches the first two days. The views from the balcony are spectacular. We stayed here over a long weekend with another family. There were 4 adults, 2 preteens and 3 14 year old boys. The layout is great for the kids to have the upstairs loft area to sleep in and hang out. No bathroom up there, however, means kids are coming dowstairs to use the bathrooms in the night. Somewhat difficult for them and for parents sleeping. The commons areas, family room, dining area and kithen are essentially one room and quite tight. As stated in another review, the couches really need to be replaced and the living room only really seats 5 comfortably. Others will be in dining room chairs. The condo was well-stocked as far as linens were concerned and had dish washer soap, trash bags and landry detergent provided. The washer and drryer are great and high end. Two things that were not provided (and needed) were paper towels and coffee filters. We prepared many meals at the condo, including soup in the provided crockpot (small though). There is limited counter space for eleaborate meal making but functional. The walk to the Kachina lift is not too far but we prefered to drive over there and park near The Bavarian. It is very convenient to park, and either hop on the lift or ski down to the base on Rudezil (not sure on spelling). Please be aware though for non skiers or even beginner skiers you will have to drive to the base. The most easy green to get back to the condo, Honeysuckle, is not the easiest for beginners. Head the warning that you need a 4x4 or tire chains as well as some gumption to drive up here. It is very steep getting to the condo. They do keep it cleared well and sanded but worrying about getting to and from kept us from heading out to dinner or down to the base much at night. Overall this is a one of a kind option for an amazing view and quiet and secluded location.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, adventure seekers, families with young children.
Owner response: Meredith- We're happy you and your family enjoyed your stay at our mountain property. Your feedback is appreciated and we will use it to keep our property one of the highest continually rated properties in the entire region. For a condo, there isn't one we know of in the valley with more open space than ours- we're quite proud of the large floor space and its excellent functionality/flexibility. However, in part from your inputs, we recently decided to purchase a new couch, two leather recliners and rearranged the living area this last weekend. We've been looking to build a 3rd bathroom upstairs and had two contractors check it out over the last week. Fingers crossed we can get the approval to make that upgrade! Come back next year and see the improvements you helped to happen. Best wishes to you in the New Year and we hope you are able to return this summer or next winter for more of the fantastic views and peaceful setting! Cheers- Rob M

Very clean, well stocked, owner was very timely in getting back to me every time I called. Will stay here next trip to taos if possible. Only thing I would suggest is to change living room sofa and loveseat to a more comfortable sectional and add a recliner then it would be perfect!Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, adventure seekers, families with young children, girls getaway, pet owners.
Owner response: Thanks for the great feedback Stanley. We're glad to hear you enjoyed your stay and that you'll hopefully be back to stay with us again soon. We're always toying with ideas on the furniture and appreciate the suggestion. Maybe next time you come you'll find a new group seating area built into the corner wall and some other changes (we're looking into adding a new bathroom and sauna upstairs!). Fingers crossed the upgrades can happen! --Rob M

My husband and I rented this condo for our anniversary. The views were spectacular, the condo was beautiful and the owners were incredibly friendly and easy to work with. It was perfect! This would be a great place to stay with a few families as well. Highly recommend dining up the mountain at The Bavarian for dinner as well.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, romantic getaway, adventure seekers, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: So happy you two could celebrate such a romantic event with us as the snow dumped outside. What a perfect time to be up there! We appreciate your feedback and hope to see you up in the mountains with us again soon. Best wishes for your next year of marriage and many many more to come! --Rob M

we had 5 guys stay overnight on a last minute mountain bike trip. The place is very well maintained and reasonably priced. Rob was very responsive to my inquiries. A great location and well above normal ski rental quality.Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, adventure seekers, families with young children, girls getaway, pet owners, age 55+.
Owner response: Thanks Barry! Glad you guys were able to drop in at the last second to enjoy the scenery and relaxation of the mountains. We hope to have you back for some skiing this winter or for the new mountain bike trails they are putting in with the resort upgrades next year. Cheers- Rob

This was the best location in Taos Ski Valley-close to everything with breathtaking views of the mountain. The condo is GORGEOUS and priced very reasonably. Rob was an absolute pleasure to deal with. The condo was spotlessly cleaned and there wasn't a single detail that was overlooked to make our stay perfect. You should DEFINITELY go to the Bavarian and have dinner and some beers! Overall, we are beyond happy with this condo and this is the ONLY place we will stay in the future. Thank you again Rob for all of your help and making this such a wonderful experience! See you next year =)Recommended for: Families with teenagers, romantic getaway, adventure seekers, families with young children, girls getaway, pet owners.
Owner response: Amanda- Your story of beers and fries outside at the Bavarian in the perfect fall weather puts a smile on my face! We are super excited that your drive from OK went well and that your vacation at our beautiful property was such a good one. There are more trails to explore and plenty more Bavarian beers to enjoy, so let us know when you're ready to come back and take in the mountain views, changing colors of the leaves, and excellent access to the Wheeler Peak Wilderness Area! Cheers- Rob

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2007
About the owner: We met serving in the Air Force. Mark & Heather were married while stationed in England, where they also met Rob. The three of us have traveled the world together and shared many amazing memories. Mark and Rob still serve in the Air Force and climb mountains together in a charity program. Mark and Heather have two kids that are quickly growing up to be amazing skiers and rock climbers.
Why the Owner Chose Taos Ski Valley:
We LOVE the mountains and that is why we bought this property. It is perfect for our families and we hope you are able to experience the stunning sunsets and unbeatable views. Each morning we wake up in the condo puts a huge smile on our faces! Give it a try- we're willing to bet you'll love it too.
Since we are moving all over the nation/world, we wanted a place we could always meet at and call 'home' together. So, while stationed in Albuquerque, we purchased this beautiful property! Now stationed elsewhere in the nation, we still meet up there at least 2-3 times a year in order to share more good times in the mountains and keep involved in our friends' and families' lives.
The Unique Benefits at this Condo:
We love how close it is to the Kachina lift. It gives us time to have a leisurely breakfast before walking w/ the kids to the lift area. Plus, having a beer at the Bavarian is nice b/c we can just walk back to the condo and not worry about driving.
In the summer we like to enjoy our coffee on the deck, then head out for a hike along the creek (just a stones throw away) or get our discs out for the free frisbee golf course.
At night we love to cook large meals and feed big crowds of friends and family, then gather around the fireplace for card games that last late into the night.
If it's winter, we make sure to go out for at least one night of moon-lit skiing in the backcountry above Lake Williams. It's a magical experience. (But we don't recommend it unless you are an expert in backcountry travel)
