Lagrasse house description
Experience the charm and tranquility of Mediterranean life in one of Southern France's most beautiful villages.
Officially designated ‘One Of The Most Beautiful Villages In France’, Lagrasse nestles at the confluence of two valleys in the stunning Corbières wine region in the foothills of the Eastern Pyrenees of Southern France. The village is linked to the 8th century Benedictine abbey to which it owed its original prosperity by two graceful bridges spanning the river.
On the ancient village market square of Lagrasse is the Maison Maynard, a 14th century medieval house that combines history, comfort and romance. The house has been completely renovated and modernized and sleeps up to eight people.
Enjoy leisurely evenings in the Grande Salle of the house and gaze at the wall murals dating back as far as the 13th century and the 15th century ceiling with original medieval paintings.
Retire to your air-conditioned bedroom and sleep deeply in the heart of the French countryside. Wake up refreshed in the morning and have your coffee on the rooftop terrace before strolling across the Orbieu River for your morning hike.
Pass the days swimming in the river, visiting wineries or historic sites, shopping for local products, sitting in the café reading or just relaxing. Whatever you choose to do, your holiday in the South of France will be filled with an unparalleled variety of sights and activities.

Year Purchased: 2002
About: My wife and I had travelled extensively around the world with our jobs. Even though we were based full time in the US, we had found that the constant travelling had enriched our lives in many ways and like many others we dreamt of having a second home in a beautiful area in another country. In 2000 we decided not to waste any more time and started on what has been the biggest and most fantastically wonderful adventure of our lives. 2 years of searching using every minute we could get away from USA, was then followed by the purchase of our 14th century house, followed by 2 more years of total renovation.
We had both spent quite a bit of time in France post college and decided that we should go with what we were familiar with. We wanted somewhere a bit quieter than the famous Cote D'Azur part of the south of France and decided to concentrate our search further south, towards Spain. On the occasional previous visits we had found this area to be beautiful, less populated and more diverse than other parts of France. As we started to visit more and more we found out about the implications of owning land, the variations of climate and most importantly about the importance of access to amenities. While there are many beautiful villages, there are far fewer with any amenities. Eventually we drove through Lagrasse. It has half a dozen restaurants, shops and much else and 10 years on I can only say that it is a very special place that we miss every day we are not there.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Apart from the fact that there are hundreds of things to do in every direction, I think that Lagrasse is unique in that I have never been anywhere where people are so friendly. A hearty "bonjour" or "bon soir" is invariably rewarded and so it has been ever since our first day there.
