If you're coming to Highlands to get away from it all, to take long walks in the woods, to lounge in the hammock, or to laugh with loved ones and refresh your spirit, you'll most likely adore this place! Ebby's House is a great old cottage located on the peaceful Big Creek finger of Lake Sequoyah. For over 25 years this house has been shared with folks who are drawn to the natural beauty of Highlands. ASK US ABOUT OUR WINTER SPECIALS, GREAT DISCOUNTS! Please note that winter discounts do not apply during holiday weeks or time periods.

Close to town and scenic waterfalls, this home gives you the freedom to cook your own meals, paddle a canoe or kayak, or sit on the back stone porch and watch the hummingbirds fly by. Fully furnished with most modern conveniences, including table linens, fresh herbs and spices, jumbo cotton towels, and even champagne flutes, all you need to bring are your suitcases and your smiles!

If you’ve never been to Highlands before, it’s the kind of Town that has long been forgotten by most. Ebby’s House is less than two miles from downtown Highlands (keep in mind that we use the term "downtown" lightly! Main Street in Highlands is all of four blocks long). Most who visit find this a wonderful place filled with lovely shops, great restaurants and all sorts of fabulous activities if you enjoy the out of doors.

There are no chain stores here, all three of our grocery stores are privately owned. We have no shopping malls, and so far- only one fast food chain has slipped into town. Though our year round population for Highlands and Scaly Mountain is about 3,000 - our summer population soars to close to 30,000!

At over 4100 feet in elevation, there’s rarely a summer night when it’s hot in Highlands. No, we do not have central Air Conditioning, nor do most older homes in Highlands and there's a good reason for that, we usually don't need it! We do have a single window AC unit in the upper level for those rare "hot" nights. Our Fall leaf colors are fabulous. Our Winters are crisp and pristine. Our Springs are filled with the surprises that only blooming Tulips and Daffodils can bring.

Though the majority of our Guests visit in the Summer and Fall, we are available for Winter visits too. As an older home, there are a few 'quirks' for cold weather guests to know, but we’ve never had a complaint about a guest not being warm or comfortable! We can’t promise you snow for Christmas or that the lake will be frozen hard enough to ice skate, but the fireplace in the kitchen is a great place to sit and tell tall tales! The first 2 weeks in November and December, plus from January 5 through March 31, we offer special discounted rates up to 50% off our normal guest rates and we can be flexible about dates and check in times. Our rates are NOT negotiable, so please do not ask for discounts or special considerations.

For Summer/Fall Guests, please note that we do not reserve less than full week rentals from May 15th through October. Sorry, but our THREE NIGHT MINIMUM POLICY IS FIRM.

PLEASE NOTE: No Swimming, Power Boats or Jet Ski's are permitted in Lake Sequoyah as it is a State Reservoir and the drinking water source for the Town of Highlands. We do provide our Guests with a Canoe and Two Person Kayak.

Should the date that you’re interested in already be blocked off on our calendar, please feel free to e-mail. Occasionally, we do have last minute cancellations. Need a larger home or an additional house in the same neighborhood(100 yards away)for friends or family? Ask us, we have neighbors who also rent their homes.

Pet Policy:
We permit Dogs only on a case-by-case basis for an additional fee. We do not allow 'yappy' or chronic barkers regardless of their breed or size. Visiting pets must be on a Flea Prevention program.

Recycling Policy:
Recycling at this property is mandatory.

'Pay It Forward Policy'
Believing that each of us CAN make a difference in this crazy world, Ebby’s House donates at least ten percent of all rental fees to local organizations that support Human and/ or Environmental missions.

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 1978

The photo we've chosen to use is of Ebby with her daughter Sarah taken in the 1950's in Indiana. Though Ebby is gone and Sarah is over 50 (and has more hair now...), we liked this image better than some contrived glam shot!
As a family, we forward thinking people who are dedicated to a peaceful, respectful world and a healthy planet. As for our primary careers, we own and operate a community type organic food garden in Florida. We love to teach people to grow things and to feed their families well. In the summer months, we live in Highlands and look forward to learning about the special moments that our rental guests create during their stay at Ebby's House.

Why the Owner Chose Highlands

This was a family home that we chose to keep. Sharing it with other folks continues the family tradition that was established in 1979. At the house are guest journals filled with reflections from Ebby and her guests that have carried on to the present date.

The Unique Benefits of this Cottage

What we cherish most about this house is the tenderness that flows through every wall and floor board. Pouring the first cups of morning coffee, sitting on the back porch curled up in our robes and watching the mist dance across the lake is sheer perfection. The sound of raindrops on the tin roof, the long bubble-soaks in the big tub, afternoon paddles on the lake, watching things grow in the garden or ice skating on the lake and dinners by the fire in the kitchen make our lives complete. Though we look forward to long walks in the woods and occasional quick trips to Town, just being in Highlands, surrounded by so much natural beauty and in this particular space is grand indeed.

We enjoyed a wonderful, peaceful vacation at this delightful cottage. The well equipped kitchen meant we could spend more time at the cottage and less running around, which we were thrilled about.

We Will Return

Guest: Pascoe Family (Florida)
Date of Stay: 06/10/11 Review Submitted: 09/11/11

Our family of five~ college student daughter, high school son, middle school daughter and Mom and Dad agreed that this was our favorite Highlands rental ever. We have spent a few summers in Highlands, so we knew what we wanted. We wanted someplace close to town, a cozy cabin that felt quaint but had modern conveniences, we wanted to be on water and we wanted to deal with owners that were efficient and welcoming. Well... we received all that and more. I always do my research so I knew we should be happy with our pick but even I was overwhelmed with how perfect the cabin was. The kids really enjoyed the kayaks and canoe. And we all loved the peacefulness of being on water. We made it to town in less than two minutes and although it is embarrassing to admit, a few days we went to Kilwins ice cream on Main St. not once but twice a day! The beds were all comfy. Mom and Dad had the master bedroom, young daughter slept well on the pull out couch, and the other two kids had lovely rooms with great beds as well. The bedrooms are on the top floor and we appreciated the proximity to one another. The kitchen was perfect; we ate at least one meal a day there. We gathered around the tv many nights for movies that we rented at the video store right downtown. We appreciated being able to do our laundry at the house; it saved us from having to pack large suitcases. Dads favorite part of the cabin was the authenticity of the cabin- it really felt cozy. Mom liked being close to town. All three kids agreed the kayaks and canoe were awesome and they also loved the family welcoming feel of the cabin. The owners were but a phone call away and made sure to have every need and desire taken care of. Fresh herbs in the yard, games, puzzles and movies ready to borrow, guide books and info on local restaurants and stores was there... I'm telling you- we wanted for nothing. Kudos to you owners~ many families are only able to vacation once a year and so we want it to be special and your cabin provided us with the perfect home base for an unforgettable vacation. We Will Return!

A Wonderful Week

Guest: Marcus (Wauchula, Florida)
Date of Stay: 07/30/11 Review Submitted: 08/09/11

We just completed a wonderful week at this little gem of a cottage. To decide on a holiday rental we read the reviews. Experience now confirms and justifies the consistently superior rating and comments. Allow time to just sit and watch the bees and butterflies work in the garden, or the birds look for bugs, or the trout at the edge of the dock.

Wonderful, Charming, Relaxing Home In A Beautiful Setting

Guest: The Lessard's (Fort Mill, SC)
Date of Stay: 07/16/11 Review Submitted: 07/23/11

My husband, two daughters (ages 4 and 5 1/2), and I just returned from an exceptionally wonderful family vacation at Ebby's House in beautiful Highlands, NC. Sarah, the owner, was very helpful and gracious in sharing her warm and lovely home. The area is perfect for nature lovers. Exploring the forest, waterfalls, rivers, and hiking was a most memorable experience! Dining at the cottage on the beautiful stone patio overlooking the lake, amid the lovely, mature gardens was most relaxing! Our children caught their first fish, rode their first canoe ride, loved the hammock, and cherished their time spent at this charming cottage. My husband told me that he thinks this was our best family vacation yet! For those with children, I highly recommend the Nature Center and Botanical Garden right in downtown Highlands. We definitely look forward to returning to this very special place! Thanks very much to Sarah and her family for extending their hospitality!

A wonderful week at Ebby's House

Guest: Andrew & Sarah (Covington, Louisiana)
Date of Stay: 07/09/11 Review Submitted: 07/18/11

We've just returned from a wonderful week at Ebby's House. We loved the feeling we had all week of being in an actual person's 'real' home--not just someone's rental investment. The house is filled with personal momentos, photographs and a great collection of good literature. Easy kayaking is right outside the door and fabulous hikes in the mountains are minutes away by car. This property was clean, well-maintained. and accurately described. The kitchen was well-stocked with fresh herbs right outside the door!

Authentic

Guest: JLeslie (Melbourne, Florida)
Date of Stay: 06/25/11 Review Submitted: 07/13/11

This is a one of a kind cottage rich with the history of its owners. We spent a summer week enjoying the cool weather, the flowers and herbs from the gardens, and all the nature you are surrounded by in this setting. Days were spenting hiking on nearby trails and early evenings we enjoyed kyaking the many fingers on the lake. Though Highlands has many excellent restaurants, the kitchen was so inviting and well equipped many evenings we cooked and ate in relaxing on the cobblestone deck overlooking the water. Definitely check out Dusty's Rhodes Superette for anything you may need to make a great meal (they also have delicious baked goods). There is also a very nice produce stand on the way into town. You will depart from this cottage looking forward to returning.

Along with our 3 young adult children(2daughters and son-in-law) plus Maggie -rescue golden and Buddy-princely scottish terrier, We spent a beautiful week in this charming cottage. Surrounded by lovely gardens with fresh herbs, large flagstone porch on the water with a dock and dining area. We have come to the Highlands/Cashiers area for 30 years and this is the environment we have looked for. The owners pay great attention to detail, making sure you have needed products -so nice in the kitchen. Not particularly handicap accessible and understand bed sizes +bath locations when booking. AMAZING!!

Guest: Tanya and Randy (Greencastle,PA)
Date of Stay: 03/28/11 Review Submitted: 04/05/11

From the very beginning this was the best trip we've had. The owners were so helpful in answering questions and making the rental process smooth. When we arrived at the cabin it was an immediate feeling of being at ease. It is just so cozy and homey! We LOVED sitting on the porch and watching the water, and the quiet was phenomenal! The cabin itself had everything that we wanted and more! The kitchen is well stocked and everything we forgot was right there! It is also in a fabulous location. . Seemed to be close to everything from hiking to restaurants to shopping. The only downside was the fact that we only had vacation for a week. We are already looking forward to our trip back!

Guest: athens boys (Athens, GA)
Date of Stay: 06/01/10 Review Submitted: 06/13/10

When choosing where to spend those precious vacation days there is always the fear of "Did I make the right decision?" Well when you walk into Ebby's house any fear you had will be replaced with a feeling of belonging. The home is charming and well appointed. The contents of the kitchen cabnets is amazing! I have rented cabins in Highlands over the last 20 years and between the home and the kindness of the owners it is the winner!!! Do yourself a favor and spend some time at Ebby's house. K&K
