It was wonderful! Quaint and Charming Cottage on the Lake!

We had the pleasure of renting Ebby's House in early April. We were so glad we did! The location is perfect and the physical setting on Lake Sequoyah is pure magic! We loved sitting on the stone patio, watching the ducks and relaxing. It was so peaceful. We also tried out the hammock, went canoeing and kayaking. Now that was fun! The cottage was cozy, clean and comfortable. It was well equipped with everything we needed (even a six foot bathtub!) Sarah and Bob Fenton were a complete pleasure to work with! Simply said we had a wonderful stay Ebby's House and strongly recommend this rental!

A Wonderful Week

We just completed a wonderful week at this little gem of a cottage. To decide on a holiday rental we read the reviews. Experience now confirms and justifies the consistently superior rating and comments. Allow time to just sit and watch the bees and butterflies work in the garden, or the birds look for bugs, or the trout at the edge of the dock.

Wonderful, Charming, Relaxing Home In A Beautiful Setting

My husband, two daughters (ages 4 and 5 1/2), and I just returned from an exceptionally wonderful family vacation at Ebby's House in beautiful Highlands, NC. Sarah, the owner, was very helpful and gracious in sharing her warm and lovely home. The area is perfect for nature lovers. Exploring the forest, waterfalls, rivers, and hiking was a most memorable experience! Dining at the cottage on the beautiful stone patio overlooking the lake, amid the lovely, mature gardens was most relaxing! Our children caught their first fish, rode their first canoe ride, loved the hammock, and cherished their time spent at this charming cottage. My husband told me that he thinks this was our best family vacation yet! For those with children, I highly recommend the Nature Center and Botanical Garden right in downtown Highlands. We definitely look forward to returning to this very special place! Thanks very much to Sarah and her family for extending their hospitality!

A wonderful week at Ebby's House

Guest: Andrew & Sarah (Covington, Louisiana)
Date of Stay: 07/09/11 Review Submitted: 07/18/11

We've just returned from a wonderful week at Ebby's House. We loved the feeling we had all week of being in an actual person's 'real' home--not just someone's rental investment. The house is filled with personal momentos, photographs and a great collection of good literature. Easy kayaking is right outside the door and fabulous hikes in the mountains are minutes away by car. This property was clean, well-maintained. and accurately described. The kitchen was well-stocked with fresh herbs right outside the door!

Along with our 3 young adult children(2daughters and son-in-law) plus Maggie -rescue golden and Buddy-princely scottish terrier, We spent a beautiful week in this charming cottage. Surrounded by lovely gardens with fresh herbs, large flagstone porch on the water with a dock and dining area. We have come to the Highlands/Cashiers area for 30 years and this is the environment we have looked for. The owners pay great attention to detail, making sure you have needed products -so nice in the kitchen. Not particularly handicap accessible and understand bed sizes +bath locations when booking. This is a one of a kind cottage rich with the history of its owners. We spent a summer week enjoying the cool weather, the flowers and herbs from the gardens, and all the nature you are surrounded by in this setting. Days were spenting hiking on nearby trails and early evenings we enjoyed kyaking the many fingers on the lake. Though Highlands has many excellent restaurants, the kitchen was so inviting and well equipped many evenings we cooked and ate in relaxing on the cobblestone deck overlooking the water. Definitely check out Dusty's Rhodes Superette for anything you may need to make a great meal (they also have delicious baked goods). There is also a very nice produce stand on the way into town. You will depart from this cottage looking forward to returning.

We Will Return

Guest: Pascoe Family (Florida)
Date of Stay: 06/10/11 Review Submitted: 09/11/11

Our family of five~ college student daughter, high school son, middle school daughter and Mom and Dad agreed that this was our favorite Highlands rental ever. We have spent a few summers in Highlands, so we knew what we wanted. We wanted someplace close to town, a cozy cabin that felt quaint but had modern conveniences, we wanted to be on water and we wanted to deal with owners that were efficient and welcoming. Well... we received all that and more. I always do my research so I knew we should be happy with our pick but even I was overwhelmed with how perfect the cabin was. The kids really enjoyed the kayaks and canoe. And we all loved the peacefulness of being on water. We made it to town in less than two minutes and although it is embarrassing to admit, a few days we went to Kilwins ice cream on Main St. not once but twice a day! The beds were all comfy. Mom and Dad had the master bedroom, young daughter slept well on the pull out couch, and the other two kids had lovely rooms with great beds as well. The bedrooms are on the top floor and we appreciated the proximity to one another. The kitchen was perfect; we ate at least one meal a day there. We gathered around the tv many nights for movies that we rented at the video store right downtown. We appreciated being able to do our laundry at the house; it saved us from having to pack large suitcases. Dads favorite part of the cabin was the authenticity of the cabin- it really felt cozy. Mom liked being close to town. All three kids agreed the kayaks and canoe were awesome and they also loved the family welcoming feel of the cabin. The owners were but a phone call away and made sure to have every need and desire taken care of. Fresh herbs in the yard, games, puzzles and movies ready to borrow, guide books and info on local restaurants and stores was there... I'm telling you- we wanted for nothing. Kudos to you owners~ many families are only able to vacation once a year and so we want it to be special and your cabin provided us with the perfect home base for an unforgettable vacation. We Will Return!

From the very beginning this was the best trip we've had. The owners were so helpful in answering questions and making the rental process smooth. When we arrived at the cabin it was an immediate feeling of being at ease. It is just so cozy and homey! We LOVED sitting on the porch and watching the water, and the quiet was phenomenal! The cabin itself had everything that we wanted and more! The kitchen is well stocked and everything we forgot was right there! It is also in a fabulous location. . Seemed to be close to everything from hiking to restaurants to shopping. The only downside was the fact that we only had vacation for a week. We are already looking forward to our trip back!

When choosing where to spend those precious vacation days there is always the fear of "Did I make the right decision?" Well when you walk into Ebby's house any fear you had will be replaced with a feeling of belonging. The home is charming and well appointed. The contents of the kitchen cabnets is amazing! I have rented cabins in Highlands over the last 20 years and between the home and the kindness of the owners it is the winner!!! Do yourself a favor and spend some time at Ebby's house. K&K

My husband, bridge partner, and I spent 4 days at this house on the lake. We enjoyed our time there tremendously. The house was exceptionally clean and comfortable. I wish my bath towels were that fluffy and new! They had everything we needed. The location of the house is perfect for touring the waterfalls and for enjoying Highlands. We were amazed that it really was only about 2 hours from Athens.

Our much needed recharge began on June 27th "our anniversary" of 11 happy years.Joye and i have tried 3 other times to get to Ebbys but the Army had other plans,My beautiful wife is a 30 plus year veteran who has been on active duty this time since 2004 and planning time away is not always easy.Sarah and Bob...wow you wont be able to find two more caring and accomodating people. Thanks to their kindness and helpful consideration we were finally able to get to Ebbys House and to say it was worth the wait is such a understatement! We walked in to find fresh cut flowers through out the home, all the windows open with a breeze that seemed to be comming straight from Heaven blowing through our new home for the next week. Please keep in mind this is June and July and we never had to run the air conditioner. So much love and caring could be seen as well as felt through out the home,in the many family photos as well as the hand made items there,it was so comfy and cozy. The outside area was decorsted with American Flags and ribbons and the beautiful colorful flowers were all overwhelming. The lake was so peaceful we canoed or kyaked every day,the day time temps averaged 72-78 highs and 46-50 nights,so comfortable,No Humidity,No Misquitoes and for the first time in my life we cut a watermelon and No Flies came to join us!The Highlands community has so much to offer in hikeing trails, beautiful waterfalls, plenty of shops and restaurants of any caliber your heart desires. If you and your family and friends are looking for the absolute perfect place to get away to and the Absolute nicest people in Sarah and Bob to take special care of you then look no further you have found the end of the rainbow! Joye and i are so looking forward to getting back to Ebbys as soon as we can,Joye will finally come off orders July 2010 and we plan to head back to paradise at Ebbys in the Highlands. With Heartfelt Appreciation Keith&Joye Brown

We had a wonderful time on our week getaway staying at the Ebby’s House. Upon arrival, the house was spotless and fresh flowers (from the garden) were on the kitchen table. The house offers the comfort of home with everything you need without having to ask down to herbs in the garden. During the day you can canoe or kayak on the lake. At night, sleeping in complete silence with fresh air blowing through the open windows was as peaceful as it gets. But any time of the day or night, sitting out on the porch watching butterflies, hummingbirds and fireflies will help you relax and enjoy your visit. We recommend this rental property and plan to return ourselves.

We vacationed at Ebby's house in July 2008 and had a WONDERFUL time. The house is incredibly charming, warm, and homey. So much loving attention to detail is evident in the amenities: the beautiful claw foot bathtub; hummingbird feeder which attracts tons of birds; gorgeous landscaping and an herb garden; wonderful music and interesting books for guest use; the guest and owner journals kept for close to 30 years; and family pictures and some historical background displayed in the bedrooms. The porch is cozy and provides a beautiful view of Lake Sequoyah. We ate our dinner outside each night as we watched the fire flies. And once while having my morning coffee, I even saw two otters swim by. We would highly recommend this rental property and hope to return again next summer. We only wished we could have stayed longer and that the weather was cool enough to use that great fire place in the kitchen! Warm Wishes, Kim, Kirt & Katey Howard

We rented Ebby's House this past October. It was THE PERFECT spot for a "getaway" for us both. The house is very well equiped, clean, well appointed, and comfortable. We felt right at home the minute we arrived and hated to leave at the end of our stay. It truly is suit-case-ready. The landscaping and the grounds were beautiful in the early fall and we can only imagine how extraordinaryly beautiful it would be in the spring and summer! We paddled all over lake Sequoyah in the canoe and two kayaks that were provided. There is plenty of room to roam just around the lake and areas adjacent to the house. Highlands is a magical place. We have a family house in Highlands that we have visited for many years. That house was not available the week we had scheduled for our vacation so we rented Ebby's House after an internet search. We were NOT disappointed and now we have a problem. We loved Ebby's House so much that we are now torn between the two. It is a perfect spot for an intimate retreat. You will love Ebby's House too.

We had a great time at Ebby's House. The Fentons have done a wonderful job of preserving that 50s/60s cabin-in-the-woods feel, although, it has everything you could possibly need from the clawfoot tub to the coffee maker and from the hummingbird/butterfly gardens to the covered porch overlooking the lake. We're looking forward to returning.

What a getaway! The weather was wonderfully cool. We enjoyed canoeing and kayaking, reading books from an extensive in-home library, watching hummingbirds and other assorted wildlife, shopping in town, eating out (and in!), and above all, the relaxation and stresslessness of it all. Thanks for letting us make ourselves at home at Ebby's House for a week.

We had a wonderful, relaxing week at Ebby’s house. I’ll never forget the view from the porch, the quiet calmness of it, broken only by the buzzing of the hummingbirds and the bees. We ate on the porch most nights, took naps in the hammock under the trees, went hiking in the mountains. The house was comfortable, peaceful, and stocked with the all the things you might need – board games, local information and a terrific library. I even found a needle and thread handy to fix a torn sleeve. For Floridians, it was such a treat to come downstairs on a June morning and see the temperature on the porch reading below 65! Don’t forget to bring a sweater and be prepared to slow down and watch nature hurrying.

So far this season, we have had five new guests and two returning guests. We ask each new guest to complete a form for us prior to their departure and they all have answered our questions in nearly the exact same way. Here's what they've had to say: Did you find our home in "tip-top" shape upon your arrival? All said YES. Was our home accurately represented on our web listings and in the paperwork you received? All said YES. Is there anything the house is lacking that could have made your visit more enjoyable? 4 out of 5 said NO, 1 guest would like us to have high speed internet. Would you consider visiting our home again? All said YES. We know that to some people, renting a house via the internet can feel like a risky adventure. From time to time, we enter information like this in our guestbook just to give potential guests more information about what prior guests have thought.

On our first walk through Ebby’s House we knew we'd found a special place. The house itself is lovely - old and comfortable - the décor simple and classy. It’s easy to feel at home with the special touches provided by the owner such as puzzles, books, cookbooks, music and much more. The grounds are delightful - flowers, herbs, mosses – all beautifully landscaped. The river runs just a few feet from the back door and the beckons to be explored. Despite it’s beauty and charm, what sets Ebby’s House apart from all others is the way that it made us all feel. I don’t know if it was the house, the fresh air, the river, the plants, the wildlife or what – but we all felt completely relaxed and at peace with each other and the world. Our week at Ebby’s House will go down in memory as one of our best times together as a family. It was all so perfect - Heaven on earth for fifty-year-old couples and fifteen-year-old boys.

What a wonderful spot! We were so delighted when we walked into this lovely house, which clearly has been full of love over the years. Twenty years of journals filled out by the owners and previous guests line a small bookshelf. The kitchen is thoughtfully stocked by someone who clearly enjoys cooking. The outside living areas are filled with thriving plants and hummingbird feeders, and the many thoughtful conveniences encourage you to relax and think of the place as your own for just a little while. One telling detail may give a glimpse into the mindset of the owners of Ebby's House: What a delight to find :::gasp::: actual condiments in the fridge and staples in the small pantry! Normally when you rent a cottage, each former guest is requested to remove everything from the fridge...resulting in a lot of wasted food and money as each new guest buys -- and eventually discards most of -- a dozen eggs or a bottle of olive oil. Not Ebby's House! At Ebby's, guests are invited to mark the date on their leftover staples and leave them in the fridge for future guests. I don't know who bought the butter and cocktail sauce we used, but thank you! And I hope someone can use the sugar and horseradish we left behind.

Wow, what a view! The back porch and dock, the yard, everything was covered in flowers. (Could you come to my house and landscape for me?) Complete with a hammock, hanging candles, and the heartwarming smell of campfires the cabin made for a fantastic vacation home. There were old photos of generations of family members in each room that made the atmosphere homey. The nights we ate in we grilled out by the lake, enjoying the smell of the mountains, the sounds of the lake water, and the stars - Virginia Beach doesn't have that many stars. The nights we ate out, there were a plethera of delicious options. I can't wait to go back.

The weekend we spent at Ebby's House will go down in history as one of the most relaxing and enjoyable vacations of our lives. From the second I walked through the door, I was embraced with a feeling of warmth and love. Ebby's House was a meeting point for NC and GA relatives. We were 8 folks total with 4 little boys between the ages of 1 1/2 and 6 years old. Everything was excellent! The porch was easy to child proof and Sarah and Bob had left a gate for us for the top of the stairs. We used the crib and the air mattress and we were all perfectly comfy and content! This is a special warm, beautiful and well-appointed home - not house!

We have stayed at Ebby's House two years in a row, September 03 and July 04 both times for a week. This year we brought our 9 year old grandson with us-we are both 70 years old. We had a wonderful time both years-enjoying the home and area to its fullest. Renting a home that has charm, natural beauty, is fully stocked with all the amentities-even puzzles and games if the weather turns bad, is wonderful. Hiking, golf, water sports, shopping and just relaxing were all a part of our stay. We recommend this home to all who would like to enjoy this type of vacation.

Ebby's House is not for those who demand a structured vacation! Ebby's House IS for those who want to experience serenity with an occasional burst of hummingbirds feeding on the back porch. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves while vacationing and truly believe that Ebby's House and its location on the water enhanced our vacation experience in Highlands.

My wife and I currently live in Denton, Texas. We are in our 30’s and still prone to making the occasional, rash, summertime getaway decision every now and then.Sometime around the end of last August, we decided on the spur of the moment to flee the punishing North Texas heat and visit with some friends who live in the Highlands area. We decided to stay at Ebby’s House after seeing the website and the very next day we rented a car and proceded to drive the seventeen hours to Highlands, North Carolina. We arrived late and staggered in with our suitcases, completely exhausted and loopy from the road. It was very dark that night, as I understand it is on most nights - pitch black in fact. We were so tired that we didn’t even notice our surroundings until the next morning when we woke up and headed downstairs to begin rooting around the kitchen for a coffee maker. At that moment, everything finally hit us and we were both blown away. With its rich hardwood floors, home-like amenities, and the back porch that opens out onto the peaceful lake, it is exactly the kind of place one would imagine frustrated writers or painters running off to so that they might escape their lives and finish a commissioned piece or second novel. Imagine having an entire waterfront, bed and breakfast all to yourself. Well, we found that coffee maker and spent the next three hours outside on the porch staring out over the water in our pajamas. Our stay at Ebby’s House was the most relaxing getaway we have ever had and we would recommend a stay there for anyone who wants a vacation spot with a relaxing vibe, all the amenities of home, natural surroundings and really wants to get out of Dodge. Thanks!!Tim and Stacey

We welcome all kind, gentle natured, caring people who are commited to a peaceful world and a healthy environment regardless of their race, spiritual beliefs or gender to visit our home. For the last twenty five years all sorts of (mostly) wonderful folks have found comfort within our walls. We're pleased to say that in our lengthy history of renting, there have only been complaints by three individuals. Since we are new to this Guest Book Service, we will be asking some of our "regulars" to send their comments soon and share their experiences with potential guests.
