Kenmare is a small tranquil country town, famous for its gourmet food and superb accommodation set amidst breath-taking scenery in one of the most unspoilt, natural environments in Europe. It is a special place that tends to leave its mark on people who come to stay and experience the town, area and especially the genuine kindness, friendliness and character of the people that live here.
It is located at the head of beautiful Kenmare Bay which stretches 50 kilometres from Kenmare out to the Atlantic Ocean. The original Irish name for the town is 'Neidin' meaning ' little nest ' because the town 'nestles' amongst the surrounding mountains which are such a striking feature of the landscape.
Its protected position and proximity to the Gul Stream mean that the climate which Kenmare enjoys is mild generally. It's unusual to experience extremely low winter temperatures - ice and snow etc., but spring and summer temperatures can be high.
The town itself has a population of around 1,800 (in 2009) and retains the 'village' feel that it's had since it was established as Ireland's first 'planned' town back in 1670. The historical, cultural and environmental significance of the place make it a designated 'Heritage Town'.
Kenmare town is known for it's award winning restaurants, Packies and Mulcahy's being two of the longstanding top quality restaurants in town with a wide range of locally sourced seafood and meats on the menu. There's an excellent food market on Wednesdays in the town with some of the best artisan food producers selling their organic produce, perfect for a self-catering night in!. To compliment the food there is a lovely shop called 'Eugenes' where you will find some excellent French and Spanish wines to suit all tastes. 'Alain' the owner is an award winning sommelier with many years experience of his trade and gives great advise or just give him your budget and he will choose a lovely wine for you.
There are 2 large supermarkets in town and three mini markets. There are great traditional Irish pubs with music nightly during the summer and also great bar food usually served until 9pm.
This area is also an ideal base for the golfer. All the southwest links courses are within driving distance, Waterville, Tralee, Killarney Golf & Fishing Club are under an hour and Ballybunion 1&half hours. Ring of Kerry and Kenmare golf club are on your doorstep and there are a number of smaller parkland courses in the area also. All of these clubs are visitor friendly.

- The famous 'Ring of Kerry' drive begins on your doorstep. Killarney town and all it has to offer is 30 minutes drive from the house via the scenic Molls Gap road. The Beara Penninsula in West Cork is a must, a different county, rugged coastal landscape and very special. A day trip to the Skellig Islands is also a must (now a workd heritage site). The Dingle Penninsula is also a must visit. ...moreless

We had a wonderful stay here in May. From the first email Kirsten and family couldn't have been more helpful. The cottage was spotless even down to the inside of drawers. There has been many a time before when I have booked accommodation and have been disappointed but not here. The views of the bay from the cottage are beautiful. The property is in a very good location on the Ring of Kerry and very close to Kenmare. You won't be disappointed if you book your holiday here

This is a well built and maintained house on a hillside overlooking Kenmare Bay. We had a group of 6 people and took advantage of the location to spend a lot of time in Kenmare and explore the surrounding countryside in all directions. Kenmare is a great little town with more good restaurants and pubs than we could visit and there's so much to do in Kerry we'll have to come back someday and finish what we started.
