Magic week in a perfect place
Magic week in a perfect place

New (friendly) invasion of England by Normans! Landed at Dover with to words in mind (drive left, drive left, drive left ...), we reached the cottage easily thanks to the written instructions provided by the owner. Divine surprise once the door opened : the property is more beautiful and nicer in real than in pictures. Very clean, well-maintened, fully equipped, very well furnished and decorated (you must a bath in the roman bathroom !). We found a welcome "food basket" and even a home backed bread. It is a fabulous cottage. We had a perfect stay in Surrey for a sunny week, spent in London, Legoland (not only for children!), Hampton Court, Stonehenge, Salisbury, Brighton with a break in Canterbury when we drove back to Dover. We never had such a welcome in every locations we spent holidays. House highly recommended for holidays. We suffered only one loss during the week : the toaster that past out one morning probably overhelmed by the tons of scones we ate. Replaced within the day (by a nice ghost ?) while we were on exploration outside. Endly I would like to thank the fairplay of the 2 british drivers who did not panic when they found us face to them on the right side of the road (the only two times I forgot the two magic words "ride left"). They slowed down giving us time to bear left. I just saw a smile on the face on the postman (the 2nd driver) in Green Lane but it was pobably due to the face of my wife, seat on right, who was screaming with fear. This was impassive driving and not latine driving. We hope that we will come back will be able to have a stay in the londonian property of the same owner. Thanks again for this week to Carole and Adrienne who were very helpful. PS. I'm not paid to write this. I've paid for this and it worths it !Owner response: What a magic review! Thank you so much for writing it, Laurent! So glad you had a magic week . I laughed out loud hearing of your driving adventures. I hope your poor wife has recovered. It was a pleasure having you all to stay. Best wishes, Adrienne

Firstly I must say a huge thankyou for all your efforts with the cottage prior to our arrival. Everyone was given an instant smile as we entered to the smell of fresh bread and Christmas music!! The cottage is truly beautiful and your efforts were greatly appreciated. We will certainly recommend Woodpecker Cottage: it was well equipped with everything we required. We had a great time and a fabulous New Year.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

Have arrived at the cottage and ithas been the most the most welcoming arrival ever with the smell of home made bread and Christmas music playing. The cottage itself is everything we could have hoped for. Excellent in every way! Cottage, setting, atmosphere – a real family Xmas. We travelled to Surrey from Cumbria to visit our daughter who has recently moved south. From first contact booking the cottage was easy and every effort was made to provide us with all the information we needed about the accommodation, how to get there and local services. There were 7 of us staying a the cottage and we were all well suited. There was ample space for us all and the younger contingent enjoyed both access to Sky and the internet. The baking bread when we arrived was a lovely touch along with all the other provisions left for us. The cottage was beautifully kept and we very much enjoyed feeding and watching the birds in the garden even once glimpsing the elusive woodpecker itself! We enjoyed a meal out at the Italian restaurant in Beacon Hill as well as an Indian take away. Our best meal out though was at the Inn on the Lake at Godalming already a favourite place for our daughter. We loved the pottery at Grayshott and walking through the woods at the Devils' Punch Bowl. The colours of the trees were beautiful. The proximity to London was great with various members of our group visiting by train on 3 different occasions during the week. Really there was something for everyone in a beautiful location in a lovely homely cottage. We would certainly recommend Woodpecker Cottage to a friend and we hope to visit again ourselves.Owner response: Thank you so much, Christine, for going to the trouble of writing a review. You are very kind! We are delighted you enjoyed your stay so much, made such good use of local amenities and the proximity to London - and glimpsed the Woodpecker, for whom our cottage is named. We hope to welcome you again one day!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the wonderful Woodpecker Cottage. There was everything that we needed – nothing had been missed - and we all felt ‘at home’ the minute we stepped through the door. We would definitely want to stay again when we are next visiting the UK, and would try to book earlier to get a longer stay. Thankyou.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

I just had to drop you a quick e-mail to say the cottage is beautiful, we leave tomorrow morning and I can honestly say I have felt as though I have been staying in my own home. Living in Dubai I come home each summer and rent various properties for the family in order to get out of the heat and soak up the 'green' of England once again! Most rented houses are okay but very definitely a 'rented' property, yours is different, a home form home and I have loved it. I have fallen in love with the place and hopefully will be back next year! The plants have been watered and birds fed...I feel quite possessive over the house and hope the next occupants look after it!!!! Thank you for renting out what is obviously a loved home, it is so welcoming and has such a 'happy' feel.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We had a wonderful stay, thank you. I think yours is the first holiday rental I have ever stayed in that is truly set up for families ......we genuinely sat there and tried to come up with one thing we would have needed that you hadnt provided..and couldnt! And as my daughter only had a couple of toys from home, she adored all the books and toy boxes! Purple is also her (second) favourite colour so she was utterly convinced that the purple room had been decorated for her.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, pet owners, families with young children.

We will definitely recommend you to our friends!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

About: We are a couple who have worked mainly in the theatre and the arts, although Adrienne is now a writer/researcher specialising in fatherhood and Martin enjoys new-age ideas, while also working as a communications coach. We have been renting out properties for almost 40 years (two small apartments originally) and first tried holiday rentals with this country cottage from 2006. As that has been such a success, and we have now moved from our main family home in the heart of London, we have been letting that as a holiday rental also, since July 2008. That is going brilliantly, too. We love people to love our homes - and we love making them comfortable!
Why Guildford:
This was our own country cottage while our children were growing up. We chose it because it is such a short distance from Central London yet in a wonderful secluded position. Now we have moved to an area of London which has a lot of green space, we no longer need to use Woodpecker Cottage regularly - although we still delight in popping down to enjoy it, and keep an eye on things . . .
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Woodpecker always feels as if it's its own little world. When we go down we often plan to visit the many fascinating attractions nearby - from the Steam Railway to Wisley Horticultural Gardens. And sometimes we do. But more often we simply stay in the cottage and garden, or wander through the woods outside our own front door. Bluebell time is spectacular: every year we gasp at the carpets of bluebells in our woods. Wisteria-time is another joy: Woodpecker is draped in it, and the sweet smell permeates every room. But winter is gorgeous too - frosted twigs, snow soft beneath your feet. And you can stay inside in the warm while still appreciating the glorious outdoors, because of the magnificent views from every window...
My husband Martin and I love to contribute as much as we can. In addition, Woodpecker Cottage and our guests are blessed to be looked after locally by our housekeeper-gardener-and-generally-wonderful-person Elizabeth Finneran who can pop round at a moment's notice. 'Leave-it-to-Lizzie' (as she is often called), is ably supported by another Elizabeth (Elizabeth Cole) and by two terrific builders, Peter Finneran and Billy Jones, who keep on top of the maintenance. In London, our administrator, Carole McEwan, deals with the paperwork promptly and efficiently.
