Chalais farmhouse description
This is an old restored charming farmhouse in a peaceful hamlet surrounded with fields.
The house offers a total country getaway into the beautiful rolling countryside of the Southern Charente, near the Dordogne border, among sunflower, wheat and corn fields.
This one-story stone house, with tiled roof and wooden shutters is over 300 years old and is located in the heart of a quiet hamlet named 'Les Foucaudes'. There is private parking within the property.
It has both a front and a back garden with a big fig tree, walnut and plum trees, and a small vineyard (you're welcome to help yourself!)
The recently renovated and fully equiped kitchen, with its thick, dark wooden ceiling, has a lot of character.
It opens out through a large french door to the back garden, where nothern exposure provides good shade for outdoor lunches. A solid outdoor wood table seats 8.
The house stays cool in the summer, thanks to its thick stone walls.
The large living room has a comfortable leather sofa facing an old open fireplace (wood is provided without no extra charge), and a big oak farm table, seating 10.
It opens up to the two spacious bedrooms: No 1 has one double bed, No 2 has one double bed + 2 single beds.
Wood floors and exposed beams create a warm atmosphere.
A portable baby crib is available upon request for babies and toddlers under 2 years old.
On the same level is a bathroom with shower and a separate toilet.
Two miles away is Chalais, a busy but small market town with all necessary amenities: supermarket, restaurants, bars, banks etc...A vibrant street market every monday, a large dominant chateau with a very popular restaurant within its walls, tennis courts, a pittoresque outdoor swimming pool, with diving boards and baby pool, and a train station ( direct trains to Bordeaux and Angoulème)
Fishing, swimming, kayaking and riding are available nearby. It is an excellent area for rambling and cycling.
Not far is Aubeterre, a lovely village on a hill with an extraordinary 12th century underground cathedral, good shops and restaurants overlooking the river. Hiring kayaks and paddling downriver is great fun.
There are many nearby safe lakeside and riverside beaches with leisure facilities.
Brossac, 2 miles away from the house, offers a large swimming lake and beaches in a beautiful woodland valley.
This is a good base from which to explore the history and culinary splendors of the region, including the prehistoric cave paintings of Lascaux, romanesque churches and wine tasting in the world famous Bordeaux and Cognac areas. A day trip to St Emilion (37 miles), Cognac (37 Miles) or Bergerac (47 Miles) is highly recommmended.
Food and wine is central to the way of life in this region, and you'll appreciate the local gastronomy, foie gras, ducks, chestnuts, fine wines and cognac.
On the Atlantic coast, less than 2 hours drive, is the very popular stylish seaside resort of Royan from where you can reach unspoilt sandy beaches.
