Longboat Key Village - 'Old Florida' Historic Cottage Retreat
- Minimum stay:N/A
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:Yes
- Wheel chair accessible:No
Welcome to Linley Cottage. You will experience Old Florida in Longbeach Village at the northern most tip of Longboat Key in this historic (1926) frame island cottage. The exterior is as inviting as the interior, with dappled trees providing charm and shaded privacy. This 1 BR, 1 BA art-filled beach cottage provides a true retreat experience and is ideally suited for boating and biking enthusiasts seeking a true old neighborhood experience. There are even 2 paddle boards available for guest use.
The owner has devoted many years to landscaping with the principles of permaculture. The lush, semi-tropical yard is filled with native plants and fruit trees. Wildlife is welcome and expected here. You may see possums, raccoons, squirrels, box turtles, non poisonous snakes, lizards and birds. If surroundings of this sort do not appeal to you, perhaps you will want to look elsewhere.
Relax and eat in the private screened porch or take a short walk to the public boat ramp, pier, or two excellent waterfront restaurants, Mar Vista and Moore's Stone Crab. Walk the shore of Sarasota Bay or meander along the mystical white sand beaches of the Gulf of Mexico. Absorb the ambiance of the Village's historic charm, the tranquil open water vistas and cool coastal breezes.
Attention artists: Treat yourselves. Take a class during your stay at The Longboat Key Center for the Arts. It's a short walk from the cottage and their offerings include one-day to one-week workshops that engage and inspire creativity. Outstanding art exhibits featuring accomplished FL artists are on display year-round.
If you prefer not to drive, the island trolley runs the length of Anna Maria Island and Longboat Key and affords easy transportation to stores, restaurants and many other points of interest along the way. St. Armand's Circle, renowned for its shopping and restaurants, as well as downtown Sarasota, are located about a 15 minute drive from the cottage.
Nature lovers will be amazed at the natural habitat of Longboat Key. Whether you’re a bird watcher, shell collector, fishing enthusiast, or master gardener, you’ll find what you’re looking for here. Our sugar sand beaches are strewn with seashells and are well populated by shore birds, sea turtles and dolphin. Take a minute and picture yourself napping on a beach towel on the warm sand by the Gulf of Mexico, all to the gentle sound of the surf. We look forward to your stay.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1985
About the owner: Jean Blackburn is a third generation Floridian who grew up on Anna Maria Island. After earning a Master of Fine Arts degree at the University of Oregon, sailing for several years throughout the Caribbean and Central America and 'homesteading' in interior Florida with family, she realized that the island was sorely missed. Jean and her husband, Steven Schaefer, recently retired as head of Manatee Co Public Defender's office, are involved in a number of environmental efforts in the area. She is on a land acquisition council for Sarasota County and a state park board and they both are active in manatee research and protection. Jean is represented by Rhea Chile's (FL's former first lady) gallery, The Studio at Gulf and Pine in Anna Maria.
Why the Owner Chose Private Homes, Longbeach Village:
The historic village of Longbeach is the oldest settlement on Longboat Key. It has retained the charm of a small waterfront community for a century. The focal point of the “Village” is the deep-water anchorage and the town dock. From the village, it is a short walk to the gulf beach and a short drive to bustling Anna Maria or world renowned shopping at St Armands Circle. Sarasota is just a hop over one more bridge.
We inherited the cottage from Steven’s parents who bought it as a winter home after his father retired from the position of Dean of Teacher’s College at Columbia University.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
The cottage is 3 homes away from the waterfront and town dock. There are glimpses of the bay from some windows. The oldest part of the house was built in 1926 and we have worked to restore the old floors and walls. The kitchen has been completely rebuilt in the spirit of early coastal living but with all new appliances. The bathroom was completely overhauled with large open, sunken shower and authentic early Cuban tiles. There is a hot and cold outside shower built of Florida coral rock with a local conch shell as shower head. The lot is landscaped with all local native plants in the front and all tropical fruit trees in the fenced back yard. The cottage comes with 2 paddle boards for the adventurous. The very popular Mar Vista restaurant where you will sit beneath buttonwood trees next to the bay is just a few steps from home.
