Aloha! Come join Tiki on our wonderful lanai, relaxing to the sounds of island birds and enjoying the refreshing tradewinds. Our Hawaiian style hale has all of the living quarters on the second floor, which takes advantage of the airflow, keeping it cool and comfortable. Situated on an acre with beautiful landscaping, 1/2 of the property is fenced and gated for extra privacy. The back 1/2 of the property is a bit wilder but feel free to roam all of it looking for fruits in season on our banana, lemon, lime, honey tangerine, avocado and guava trees. You'll be sure to come across pineapple as well and lilikoi (passion fruit) vines line the fence.
Inside the kitchen and living room are open to one another, inviting conversation while cooking goes on. The kitchen has a full stove and fridge, a microwave, coffee pot, blender and all of the pots, pans, utensils, plates etc. that you'll need to whip up an island meal. The main bedroom, the 'Shell Room', has a queen platform bed for restful nights and a full closet with shelves for your belongings. The 'Jungle Room' will accommodate the rest of the family or friends with a queen bed and twin bunkbeds, (it also has a full closet with shelves). But where you'll really want to be is on the lanai, enjoying outside living while sipping a cup of coffee in the morning before heading out to explore the Big Island or barbequing dinner on the gas barbeque in the evening when you return.
Tiki's Hut is in Hawaiian Paradise Park, which is centrally located between Hilo and Pahoa. Many wonders abound nearby to explore including Volcanoes National Park (a must, only 40 minutes away), Ahalanui Thermal Spring Pool (fun for kids and adults alike), Kapoho Tide Pools (great snorkeling), Kalapana and Kaimu black sand beaches and active lava flows! The Makuu Farmers Market is held on Sundays at the south end of Hawaiian Paradise Park, next to the highway and is filled with vendors offering many unique items in addition to local fruits and vegetables. You'll also want to plan a day trip up the beautiful north coast to the view the incredible Waipio Valley, which is sacred ground to the native Hawaiians. Access beyond the view point is limited to 4 wheel drive (which you can rent in Hilo) or you can pay for a guided tour into the valley.
As we are new to the area also, please let us know about your experiences at these and the many other places that you discover!

Year Purchased: 2011
About the owner: Dave and I (Alison) are actually quite new to the Big Island ourselves! Dave was in the services on Oahu in the early '70s, spending almost six years there and fell in love with Hawaii. I made my first trip to Hawaii more recently, in 2009, when we went to Kauai for a family gathering and I was hooked. We came to the Big Island last year (2011) to check it out and visit friends who had just bought a home nearby and decided this area was for us. We actually stayed at the Dolphin Hideaway run by Laura Richman, a realtor with Remax and she was very helpful, providing a lot of info about the area, so we could make a good decision (great sales lady). Eventually we want to move here full time but with twin grandbabies on the way, the timing isn't quite right yet! In the meantime, we plan to come here as often as possible and enjoy our hale, while exploring the island, as we hope you will.
Why the Owner Chose Keaau: We love being in a country setting. Hawaiian Paradise Park and the Keaau area has that wonderful country feel without being too far from Hilo, so we have easy access to stores and activities.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage: Our hale is situated on the property in such a way that it takes full advantage of the tradewinds and still leaves plenty of open area in which to play. Many plantings line the fences, providing privacy and are beautiful to view from our second story vantage. It is a short drive down the road to the coastline and a walking trail from which to view the crashing waves (and whales at the right time of year).
