The following is taken from the Savannah Visitor's Center self- guided walking tour. Our house is the first stop on the tour!

"We begin our tour at the Visitors Center on MLK (1) and head East on Liberty Street to the corner of Liberty and Barnard. Across the street on the Southwest corner sits the Bird-Baldwin House (2). It is the oldest building in the city south of Liberty St. The original wood portion (left) was constructed in 1838. The floor plan, typical of most construction at the time, had a wide entrance hall with double parlors. The parlor floor was raised to permit maximum air through the house. Mr. Lewis Bird, a prominent Attorney began the original construction, but before it was completed the entire Bird family perished on the Steamship Pulaski when it exploded off the coast of North Carolina. (just to make things a little more intersting the closest square to the house is Pulaski Square!)

Mr. Bird's mother completed the house and sold it to his law partner Mr. Baldwin who lived in it for many years. The stucco portion was added in 1860. The house was used by General Shermans' officers as thier headquarters. Over the years the house has been a private residence, an apartment building, a store and a corner tavern known as "Harry's".

It had deteriorated so badly that street people were living in it and it caught fire several times yet the house survived. After sitting vacant for many years, in 1980 it was renovated into six apartments. In 1991 it became a Bed & Breakfast. A couple of years ago it was converted into condominiums."

Our condos are a wonderful example of Savannah architecture and living. They are located at 201 West Liberty Street (at the intersection of Barnard and Liberty Streets and just one block West of the geographic center of the Historic District and are available for both short-term and long-term rental. Each 1000 square foot- non smoking - condo rental is located on the third floor (walk up) with no guests above you for additional privacy.

Our Savannah condos offer soaring ceilings and Savannah heart pine flooring. Large windows offer a great view and lots of light but also privacy since the units are on the third floor. Each has a large private bath with Jacuzzi jetted tub which is great after long walks in one of America's "Most Walkable Cities." Each has a fully furnished kitchen (with combo microwave/convection oven and separate cooktop) which gives you the opportunity to cook your own meals or take advantage of several wonderful restaurants in the immediate area. Each unit is non smoking and offers one king size bed and one pull out sofa. Wireless High Speed Internet is also available.

The Bird Baldwin House is a short walk from the Savannah Visitor's Center where you can pick up a guided tour trolley or learn more about the activities Savannah has to offer. One complimentary off street - onsite parking is included in your rental. These cozy condos offer all you need for a couple of days or a couple of months. Live like a true Savannahian... If only for a short while!

Both condos are located at the corner of West Liberty Street and Barnard Street. Orleans Square is one block South and Pulaski Square is 1/2 block North. They are located close to SCAD student dorms on Oglethorpe and are directly across from the Savannah Civic Center, the site of SCAD graduation. Great for visits from SCAD parents!

The condos are furnished with all bed linens and bath terry. They are also stocked with extra pillows and blankets. We always take in to account the number of guests and length of stay and try to leave plenty of bath terry & linen. Please notify us when making your reservation if you plan to use the pullout sofa. Of course we ask that you reuse bath terry whenever possible. For extended stays we will drop off clean bath terry and pick up soiled terry. Due to such a wide variety of personal preference, we are unable to provide personal hygiene items like face soap, bath soap, shampoo or conditioner. Please bring these items with you.

These condo units are locally owned and operated. When you call or email for information you are speaking with the owners, not a management company who oversees hundreds of units. We are in these units between each guest visit to ensure that they are clean and well maintained. When we have family and friends visit Savannah, they stay here.

We have over 35 years combined hospitality experience. We spent over a year looking for a condo that offered all the key touchpoints that we know, from experience, visitors to Savannah need and expect. A great location that is easy to find for first time visitors (we are less than two blocks west of the geographic center of the Historic District), off street parking, a historically significant building (built in 1838), original doors and heart pine flooring, comfortable furnishings including a large king bed with high-end mattress and box spring (no thin worn out mattresses), a very large jacuzzi and a fully equipped kitchen with all utensils and pots and pans. Each unit has a coffee maker but we do not provide filters or coffee. Those items can be purchased locally. These are truly great condo units available at very competitive rates.

Check out our other Savannah VRBO listings! These units are Garden Level and offer an even greater value!

Why the Owner Chose Savannah

My wife, children and I moved to Savannah from Atlanta in October of 2001 and immediately feel in love with Savannah. We chose to invest in Savannah and purchased two units in the Bird Baldwin House in July 2004. The Bird Baldwin House was built in 1838 and is 171 years old! It is the oldest house south of Liberty Street. We have really enjoy owning such a unique part of Savannah's rich architectural history.

The Unique Benefits at this Condo-Historic Home (1838)

We live in Savannah full time so we get to enjoy the Historic District and Tybee Island almost every day. Our children attend school at one of the churches downtown and Franklin Square is their playground. The pedicabs are a great way to get around the Historic District. I work downtown and walk to almost all my meetings.

    • This was a great place to stay. I was completely unprepared for how awesome the place was. The pictures really do not do justice to the place. Plus, you are in walking distance to anything you could possible want to do in Savannah. The price was much better than many other places. I have already recommended this place to all my friends - I can't wait to come back!

    • March 2009 - My daughters and I spent an enjoyable, relaxing weekend in Savannah using the condo as our base. We were able to easily walk to all attractions in the Historic District, including River Street. We have visited Savannah several times and stayed in hotels until this trip. We won't stay in a hotel again....the condo was everything it was advertised to be and more.

    • This condo was a wonderful experience. We loved the location, the decor, spacious and comfortable rooms, the historic space. We felt safe in the neighborhood. Liberty Street carries traffic noise but it was not a bother to us. This place and location is full of charm and character. We will be back.

    • Thanksgiving weekend 2008. We could not have been more pleased with the condo. It was in a perfect location - central to everything. About half way between River St and Forsyth park. We walked everywhere we went. The unit is well maintained and had everything we could need. We are so glad that we rented the condo versus staying in a hotel room. It was great to have so much space and a kithen we could cook meals in. We ate dinner one night at The Olde Pink house and it was fabulous. We need more time next time. Thanks for everything and always being so prompt in corresponding with us.

    • 11/18/08 After recently enjoying the sights and sounds of Savannah, the best site was the #6 condo at the 1838 Townhouse. The location is well within walking distance to a long list of historical parks, shopping areas, museums to visit or restaurants to dine at to enjoy a delicious meal. The #6 condo (blue bedroom) is adequately furnished to rest and rejuvenate after walking to River Street, City Market, Forsyth Park or Paula Deen's. For me, the location and character of the 1838 Townhouse was a huge selling point as to why I would recommend future visitors to Savannah consider utilizing this VRBO rental.

    • Our accommodation were wonderful. The rooms were as described and more. Who wants to pay hotel prices for a room when you can pay basically the same and have a home. We had a fabulous time and your condo made it the perfect trip.

    • Three of us recently stayed in unit 5 and were very pleased. The unit is beautifully furnished with very large rooms. The property is within walking distance of all the must-see sights in Savannah. The owners, Whip and Stephanie couldn't have been nicer and truly went out of their way to make our stay comfortable.

    • My husband and me celebrated our 21 wedding anniversary and we loved this condo. It was a great home away from home and as the other guests have stated the pictures do the place not as much justice as in person. The old historic feel to it was wonderful. We could not stop talking about the beautiful hard wood floors. Great place to stay.

    • We've stayed here for 4 days in august. The location is superb. We really liked to stroll the streets after diner and loved the beautiful houses and trees with the Spanish moss. Everything you need for your stay is in the apartment and the grocer is also nearby. It was quiet and safe and our 6 year old daughter had enough space to play. We've enjoyed the porch a lot. The only thing that was missing was a bigger table (for breakfast or dinner outside) and an extra chair. We didn't want to leave!

    • We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the Robert E. Lee Suite at the Bird-Baldwin house. The condo was very tastefully furnished, and the jacuzzi tub was an unexpected surprise. It was evident that Stephanie and Trip had carefully considered the needs and comfort of their guests. The convenient location of the condo allows for comfortable walks to both the Riverfront and Forsyth Park.
