The following is taken from the Savannah Visitor's Center self- guided walking tour. Our house is the first stop on the tour!
'We begin our tour at the Visitors Center on MLK (1) and head East on Liberty Street to the corner of Liberty and Barnard. Across the street on the Southwest corner sits the Bird-Baldwin House (2). It is the oldest building in the city south of Liberty St. The original wood portion (left) was constructed in 1838. The floor plan, typical of most construction at the time, had a wide entrance hall with double parlors. The parlor floor was raised to permit maximum air through the house. Mr. Lewis Bird, a prominent Attorney began the original construction, but before it was completed the entire Bird family perished on the Steamship Pulaski when it exploded off the coast of North Carolina. (just to make things a little more intersting the closest square to the house is Pulaski Square!)
Mr. Bird's mother completed the house and sold it to his law partner Mr. Baldwin who lived in it for many years. The stucco portion was added in 1860. The house was used by General Shermans' officers as thier headquarters. Over the years the house has been a private residence, an apartment building, a store and a corner tavern known as 'Harry's'.
It had deteriorated so badly that street people were living in it and it caught fire several times yet the house survived. After sitting vacant for many years, in 1980 it was renovated into six apartments. In 1991 it became a Bed & Breakfast. A couple of years ago it was converted into condominiums.'
Our condos are a wonderful example of Savannah architecture and living. They are located at 201 West Liberty Street (at the intersection of Barnard and Liberty Streets and just one block West of the geographic center of the Historic District and are available for both short-term and long-term rental. Each 1000 square foot- non smoking - condo rental is located on the third floor (walk up) with no guests above you for additional privacy.
Our Savannah condos offer soaring ceilings and Savannah heart pine flooring. Large windows offer a great view and lots of light but also privacy since the units are on the third floor. Each has a large private bath with Jacuzzi jetted tub which is great after long walks in one of America's 'Most Walkable Cities.' Each has a fully furnished kitchen (with combo microwave/convection oven and separate cooktop) which gives you the opportunity to cook your own meals or take advantage of several wonderful restaurants in the immediate area. Each unit is non smoking and offers one king size bed and one pull out sofa. Wireless High Speed Internet is also available.
The Bird Baldwin House is a short walk from the Savannah Visitor's Center where you can pick up a guided tour trolley or learn more about the activities Savannah has to offer. One complimentary off street - onsite parking is included in your rental. These cozy condos offer all you need for a couple of days or a couple of months. Live like a true Savannahian... If only for a short while!
Both condos are located at the corner of West Liberty Street and Barnard Street. Orleans Square is one block South and Pulaski Square is 1/2 block North. They are located close to SCAD student dorms on Oglethorpe and are directly across from the Savannah Civic Center, the site of SCAD graduation. Great for visits from SCAD parents!
The condos are furnished with all bed linens and bath terry. They are also stocked with extra pillows and blankets. We always take in to account the number of guests and length of stay and try to leave plenty of bath terry & linen. Please notify us when making your reservation if you plan to use the pullout sofa. Of course we ask that you reuse bath terry whenever possible. We are unable to provide daily linen & terry service. For extended stays we will drop off clean bath terry and pick up soiled terry. Due to such a wide variety of personal preference, we are unable to provide personal hygiene items like face soap, bath soap, shampoo or conditioner. Please bring these items with you.
These condo units are locally owned and operated. When you call or email for information you are speaking with the owners, not a management company who oversees hundreds of units. We are in these units between each guest visit to ensure that they are clean and well maintained. When we have family and friends visit Savannah, they stay here.
We have over 35 years combined hospitality experience. We spent over a year looking for a condo that offered all the key touchpoints that we know, from experience, visitors to Savannah need and expect. A great location that is easy to find for first time visitors (we are less than two blocks west of the geographic center of the Historic District), off street parking, a historically significant building (built in 1838), original doors and heart pine flooring, comfortable furnishings including a large king bed with high-end mattress and box spring (no thin worn out mattresses), a very large jacuzzi and a fully equipped kitchen with all utensils and pots and pans. Each unit has a coffee maker but we do not provide filters or coffee. Those items can be purchased locally. These are truly great condo units available at very competitive rates.

I rented the condo with my daughter to celebrate her graduation from college. We came at the perfect time of year, mid-May. The jasmine on the gate and throughout the city was in full bloom. Upon entering the condo, our first thoughts were "how adorable!". The condo is exactly as described on listing and a perfect location for touring Savannah. We were pleasantly surprised on the absence of street noise at night allowing for a good night rest. Be prepared to walk and have comfortable shoes. Keep the heels at home! Greatly enjoyed the porch. Would rent again in a heartbeat.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, tourists without a car, sightseeing.

Enjoyed this charming condo again for the second year in a row. This is situated in the heart of the Beautiful Historic District. Very close to everything and easily accessible to the entire area. Dot bus and visitors center close by. There's is no need for a car, just get out and walk to see the city. Wipp and Stephanie are excellent hosts and readily available for anything you might need have several suggestions of places to visit. I absolutely recommend the Savannah Theater, was excellent and extremely entertaining. This condo is just what the two of us were looking for. I whole heartedly suggest renting this lovely and historic home! Thanks to Wipp and Stephanie.Recommended for: Age 55+, girls getaway, tourists without a car, sightseeing.

I am former travel agent of 25+ years and have traveled all over the world and this property rates at the top of my list, along with the city of Savannah! I was in town to visit my daughter who is a student at SCAD and this is the perfect location to see all the sights of Savannah and be close to SCAD dorms. I had a car (the parking in the back of the property is a bonus!), but you really don't need one in Savannah, unless you want to take a day trip out to Tybee Island. The owners of this property in the Bird Baldwin House have provided a lovely accommodation. The bed was very comfortable. I enjoyed sitting out on the back deck in the morning with my coffee and in the evening with my glass of wine. If you have children with you there is a pullout sofa in the living room with an extra TV, so plenty of room. The pictures provided are spot on! April is the perfect time of year to visit. Everything was in full bloom. Loved my time spent at Bird Baldwin! Will be going back.Recommended for: Families with young children, romantic getaway, girls getaway, tourists without a car, sightseeing.

We have stayed in many places in Savannah from B&B's to hotels to vacation rentals, and we keep coming back here. The location and amenities can't be beat. The condo is walking distance to everything: City Market, River Street, the shops on Broughton, Forsyth Park, and many restaurants, squares, and tours. The condo is very spacious with a large bedroom, a pull out couch, and two TVs. The kitchen has whatever you need should you need to prepare something. The jetted tub helps soothe away any day spent walking too much. The only downside is if you have mobility challenges. It is a third floor walk up, but we found the steps easy enough, even at the end of a long day.Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, sightseeing.

We are relatively frequent visitors to Savannah and have stayed in both apartments and B&Bs. The 1838 was by far the best value for the money. Both the description and photos were good indicators and we were not disappointed. We found the apartment clean, tastefully decorated and well-equipped. Its Liberty Street location is in the middle of Savannah's Historic District and each apartment has its own parking space, a non-trivial consideration. We tried Circa 1875, a new French bistro, this visit and were delighted. Stephanie was very helpful before, during and after our visit.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Really enjoyed our stay at the condo...everything was as described and we would definitely stay there again. We felt we were a part of old Savannah in this beautifully restored historic dwelling. We took the city tour; ate lots of delicious shrimp and grits, fried tomatoes and collard greens at Old Pink House, Belfords, and Shrimp Factory; and learned a lot about the Civil War. Just sorry that we didn't plan a longer stay.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, girls getaway, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, sightseeing.

My husband and I had the opportunity to spend several nights in the Bird-Baldwin house. It was wonderful. The location put us within walking distance from all of the attractions in Savannah. I would recommend this condo to any couple hoping to just park their car for a few days/nights and walk around the beautiful historic district.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, sightseeing.

For our first trip to Savannah, I am so happy we stayed at the Bird Baldwin House! Beautiful top floor unit with great, spacious rooms with high ceilings, cozy decor and everything we needed to make a home away from home! Plus the location couldn't be better - easy walk to shops, bus lines, restaurants, bars, waterfront area and all the great parks and stunning homes in the Historic District! Owners were super great while we were there - gave great accommodation and were easily accessible for questions. Loved the indoor hot tub, the gorgeous architecture of the house and the amenities. Could have stayed for several more weeks. This is definitely a place I'd recommend and anytime we are in Savannah, we'll stay here. So much more charm in this place than the box hotels in the area - couldn't have asked for a better spot! Plus the kitchenette made it simple to do coffee/breakfast "at home" and we had many long relaxing afternoons sitting on the back porch, staring out at the breathtaking trees and great buildings surrounding the house. We enjoyed many romantic evening walks through the various squares and it was an easy 5 min jaunt down to River street where we had out first taste of low country boil! This was great since we opted not to have a car while we were there - didn't need one staying in this spot. Thanks Bird Baldwin House for helping us have a great time in Savannah!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, girls getaway, tourists without a car, sightseeing.

Place was nearly perfect. Only down side was street noise (as others have said). But in fairness that is part of charm of an old house. Large tub, fireplace, king bed-very romantic. Location was great. minutes from anywhere you want to go from River Street to Abercorn Cemetary to John the Baptist Church to City Market. All walkable distance. Already planning our return trip. Note to elderly or handicap, back porch stairs are a bit tight and steeper than normal however front entrance is much easier. Owners are very fair and easy to deal with all my questions.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, tourists without a car, sightseeing.

Loved our stay at the Bird Baldwin House. We were on the third floor and could have watched the parade from the balcony, buty chose to sit on the steps of the baptist church near Chippewa Square. The house was remarkably convenient to everything. Seems to be set right on the edge of the center of the Historic District and it was an easy walk to the river and all points of interest. We only used the car for a trip to Bonaventure Cemetery - also highly recommended. We were so intrigued with the rich history and the character of all the buildings. We enjoyed a "zombie" tour, carriage ride, visits to the catholic church and jewish temple, and stops at several excellent restaurants - our personal favorite was the Olde Pink House! The highlights of the parade were the Budweiser Clydesdales and so many bagpipe bands - loved those!Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, romantic getaway, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, sightseeing.
Owner response: St. Patrick's Day in Savannah is truly a sight to behold. About 400,000 of our closest friends descend on Savannah and the parade is always a highlight for visitors and locals alike! Stephanie and I are so happy that you enjoyed your stay at the Bird Baldwin House. The Pink House is a great restaurant and if it is all booked up, try Garibaldi's on Congress Street in City Market. Same owners and a similar menu. The crispy scored flounder is my favorite and if you can handle the heat ask for the Viper Sauce, it is not on the menu. Thanks for mentioning our location. We are exactly two blocks from the center of the Landmark Historic District. Just about every attraction or restaurant is an easy walk from the Bird Baldwin House. If you don't feel like walking there is always the pedicabs. No set rates, they work for tips only! Thanks again and we hope to see you in Savannah again very soon. Safe travels!

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2004
About the owner: Stephanie and I both grew up in Alabama. She is from Fairhope and I am from Anniston. We met at and graduated from Auburn University. We were both in the hospitality industry, working at resorts like Callaway Gardens and the Grove Park Inn, until we made the decision that Stephanie would stay home when our son was born in 1997. Our daughter was born the next year. I have over 28 years in the hospitality industry with most of that in executive management positions. Stephanie has handled the condos since we purchased them in 2004. She is very thorough and is always quick to respond to inquiries (check out the photo of her responding to inquiries while we were on vacation in a remote Alaskan bear camp! How she had cell coverage I have no idea.) We enjoy what we do and consider ourselves truly blessed in so many ways. Savannah is a great city! When we are not working or raising two teenagers, we like to go to the mountains of North Carolina to relax.
Why the Owner Chose Savannah:
My wife, children and I moved to Savannah from Atlanta in October of 2001 and immediately fell in love with Savannah. We chose to invest in Savannah and purchased two units in the Bird Baldwin House in June 2004. The Bird Baldwin House was built in 1838 and is more than 170 years old! It is the oldest house south of Liberty Street. We have really enjoy owning such a unique part of Savannah's rich architectural history.
The Unique Benefits at this Condo:
We live in Savannah full time so we get to enjoy the Historic District and Tybee Island almost every day. The pedicabs are a great way to get around the Historic District. I work downtown and walk to almost all my meetings.
