Perfect for a family vacation
Perfect for a family vacation
This is a heritage house with a quirky, nothing-matches vibe. Everything was clean, well-maintained and in working order. The kitchen had plenty of utensils and good-quality pots and pans. There was plenty of hot water for showers; the water pressure was a little less than we're accustomed to, but certainly adequate. The bedrooms and kitchen comfortably fit 8 people. The living room would be a tight squeeze for 8 people, but 5 or 6 could comfortably enjoy spending a rainy evening watching DVDs or videocassettes (which can be rented from the nearby general store in Petite Riviere) on the nice new TV. Our electronics-addicted family greatly appreciated the easy walking distance to the Best Coast Cafe, with its excellent wireless service, great food and super-friendly staff. This cottage is also an easy walk to Broad Cove beach, which isn't big or fancy, but turned out to be our family's favourite beach. We parents could relax on our towels in the sand while our lively, young son tirelessly explored the nearby rocks and tide pools. We also enjoyed hiking the Bear Trap road, which begins at the left side of the beach just past the old fishing huts. Beautiful ocean views. Fascinating geology. We enjoyed many other nice beaches in the area -- Rissers, Green Bay, Crescent, Cherry Hill, and the slightly further afield Thomas Raddall. Our son never tired of looking for interesting stones and shells. Our son was curious about the Petite Riviere Winery; though it will be more than a decade until he reached drinking age, the folks there were so patient and kind about answering his barrage of questions. We parents thought the wine and cider were delicious! As do many other tourists we enjoyed the caves at The Ovens (we thought they were worth the entry free) and the Maritime Fisheries museum in Lunenberg (and Lunenberg in general). If you plan to take the LaHave cable ferry to get to these destinations, be sure to stop in at the LaHave Bakery. Would definitely recommend this location to others, especially families with children.
