Saignon cottage description

Rose Cottage is located in the heart of the beautiful medieval village of Saignon, one of the ten oldest villages in France. You will experience authentic village life in a serene and peaceful environment , surrounded by narrow alleyways, historic fountains and all the rich and wonderful architecture of the 6th to the 12th century, including the magnificent Romanesque church of Notre-Dame de Pitie. Rose Cottage has a complete kitchen with an attached laundry. Also on the ground floor is the cosy living and dining area with wood fire and comfortable lounges. Upstairs are two generous bedrooms with ensuites. Start your day with a coffee and baguette from Christine's Bakery and finish with delicious French cuisine from one of the many petite restaurants dotted around the village. From the top of the village the panoramic 360 degree view of the Luberon Valley is breathtaking. The well known town of Apt is only a 5 minute drive away, offering good supermarkets and an excellent Saturday morning market.

We have just returned home from our 7-week journey through France and Spain and must say that our 3-week sojourn in Saignon was the highlight of our trip. The cottage is simply delightful and its location within the village and the greater Luberon area make it a comfortable and ideal base. Rose Cottage had everything we needed for a luxurious stay. We stayed there as a couple, but there is easily plenty of room to accommodate two couples or a family without tripping over each other. We enjoyed the walking trails in the district as well as the myriad of markets in the various villages and towns. Still think that Apt on Saturday mornings was the best though. Thanks to Peter for his restaurant suggestions down there too. Rosemary and I enjoyed two interesting evenings dining at the quirky L'Intramuros! Save for changing a couple of light bulbs, everything went without a hitch. We used the cooking facilities as well as the washing machine to good effect. And aren't there some wonderful wines in the region? I particularly enjoyed the La Diva red by Ravoir et Fils of Lauris which was nestled into the little wrought iron basket on our arrival at the cottage. Coupled with the fresh baguette, lovely fresh lavender aroma and soft music from the nostalgic station on the radio, we both felt this was such a delightful touch. Our warmest thanks to Claire for her unobtrusive help and advice.

Rose Cottage was the perfect home away from home for my husband and I to spend three weeks relaxing and soaking up all things French - especially the wine & cheese . The village of Saignon is a quintessentially French village beautiful cottages, gorgeous town square with fountain, picturesque outlook. Everything that speaks to you about staying in a French village Saignon has it but with a wonderful bonus you cannot drive through the village so no tourist traffic. You can drive into the village to drop off luggage/groceries at the cottage. The cottage is perfectly set out with a cosy lounge with TV, DVD and stereo. A well equipped kitchen made staying-in and cooking a breeze, beautiful sunny bedrooms with lovely linen, lots of towels and storage. Laundry was made easy with a large front loader and dryer. The village has a lovely bakery where Christine & her staff are very friendly and very patient with tourists practicing their French. Eating out was great the village restaurants were welcoming and the food fabulous. The larger town of Apt is just a quick drive down the hill were you can access everything you would need. Market day on a Saturday was wonderful. Being there for three weeks allowed us time to become familiar with cheese makers, artisan bakers, fruit & veg vendors and butchers - I am sure we ate our way around all them. Saignon is very central to lots of other villages …we would often pack a picnic and just drive... everywhere is gorgeous. We had a fabulous time staying at Rose Cottage and can’t wait to return.

We wound our way up a well made road from Apt to the perched village of Saignon with our excitement growing around every bend as the unique rock formation that the village appears to be clinging to, came clearly in to view. A stunning view of the valleys and hills beyond instantly took our breath away when we parked beside the church and unloaded our luggage. Heading off to find our accommodation along a labyrinth of narrow streets we recognised Christine's well known Boulangerie - Patisserie and a couple of the restaurants we had read about. It quickly became apparent that this delightful village held all the promise of a very special time ahead for us in Provence. We immediately felt calmer without buses and cars bearing down on us throughout the streets! Rose Cottage's current Australian owner was extremely helpful and made us feel very confident when we were booking our accommodation and the cottage was exactly how we had pictured it - incredibly charming and inviting! It is spotlessly clean and wonderfully set up with everything you need to just move into a French village and immediately feel at home! The charming French decor throughout, its cosy living room, spiral staircase and the excellent kitchen and laundry facilities all made our stay very pleasurable and completely stress free. At the end of the day we loved being able to enjoy our wine and cheese in the afternoon sun in the cobbled courtyard out front beside the ancient fountain that also provided a soothing background sound of running water. We read the novels in the cottage that were written by Henrietta Taylor, an Australian who had lived at Place de La Fontaine and also renovated Rose Cottage, and this added much to our enjoyment of our time in Saignon. The village is full of post card vignettes and photo opportunities with its many fountains and shuttered stone buildings that never failed to delight us as we explored. You can also walk to the top of the original site of the village fortress for magnificent views of Mount Ventu and the surrounding hills and villages. It was easy to drive out from Saignon to visit other villages and wonderful markets. We decided that Saignon's tranquility provided a haven and welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the larger places with their tourist buses and cars! By the end of our week, we felt so lucky to have stayed this very special village of Saignon. We would definitely like return in the future for a longer time!

We arrived at Rose Cottage and were delighted at the accomodations. They were charming, comfortable, and sparkling clean. The kitchen is well equipped with everything you might need. It was like a home away from home. The bedrooms are spacious with comfortable beds and easily accomodated the four of us. My wife and mother in law were delighted with the authentic Provencial decor. Peter, and Peter's assistant Claire, were very accomodating and attentive to all of our needs. Saignon is a picturesque and authentic town with outstanding views of the surrounding country side. It also provides easy access to the surrounding sites. We highly recomend this property and would love to return

My husband & I had the most amazing week at Rose Cottage in June 2012. We could have stayed months! Rose Cottage is just as it appears on the website photos. What you can't appreciate from the photos is how fresh & welcoming it is. It is spotlessly maintained by Claire who greets you with a smile & fresh baguette. All the decor & furnishings remind you that you are in Provence, crisp linens & colourful tiles. Comfy beds in spacious rooms & shutters ensure a good sleep. The kitchen & laundry are well equipped for a holiday. The free reliable wifi is greatly appreciated. The supermarkets in Apt (5 mins away) provide all essentials and Christine's bakery in the village for daily bread & pastries. As soon as you walk in the door you see the 'happy' tiles in the kitchen, the radio is softly playing, you want to sit & soak up the ambience of the cottage. But the narrow streets of Saignon invite you to explore. It is not an option to drive your car in the village but we always found it easy to park in the car park near the church and it is short stroll to the cottage. Each hour of the day show the streets & houses in a different light. First thing in the morning & in the late afternoon we took the opportunity to enjoy the fabulous views from the top of the village. Lavender was flowering in the fields below & visitors to the village would stop & photogragh the roses outside our pretty stone cottage. There were lots of suggestions on places to visit & see nearby in the cottage guide book. We had fabulous drives through the lavender fields to the Gorges du Verdon, Cassis on the coast & Aix en Provence with its gorgeous streets. Our most memorable drive was on a Sunday to Mount Ventoux. We had the Green Michelin Provence 2012 guidebook & we saw most sights listed as a must see. Every day we explored the hilltop villages, the scenic drives & sights of the Luberon. Each evening we would retreat to our quaint little village & stone cottage in Saignon. One evening we had a delicious meal at the Restaurant La Petite Cave (just around the corner). Most evenings we would sit in the fading sunlight of the day & enjoy a glass of wine & meal outside our cottage by the fountain. On Saturday we visited nearby villages and in Menerbes & Bonnieux saw wedding celebrations. As we returned to Saignon a wedding in our village had a gospel choir on the church steps. We loved driving to Lourmarin, sitting by the beautiful pond in Cucuron & seeing the lavender & sunflowers in bloom!

My husband and I had a truly memorable stay in Rose Cottage in Saignon in May 2012. I can honestly say that the cottage and the village both exceeded our expectations, and we unhesitatingly recommend staying at Rose Cottage to all our friends and family. The cottage is simply gorgeous, lovingly decorated in a very Provencial way, with pretty soft furnishings, comfortable beds, modern bathrooms, ample heating, a well-fitted kitchen, great laundry, and even a couple of bikes for a peddle around the countryside! We loved the thick, stone walls, the large, hand glazed terracotta tiles on the floors, the fluffy white bathrobes in the bathrooms, the bottle of wine and baguette on arrival, the beautiful rose at the front of the cottage, the little table and chairs at the front door, the fountain outside the house and the shutters on the windows that we closed at night. The peace and quiet of Saignon is not to be overlooked - all the hustle and bustle of Apt and larger, more touristy villages is a mere 5 minutes or more away, but Saignon is a wonderful escape from all of that. Markets with lots of wonderful Provencial things to buy are easily accessed in all the villages on their specific days, and there is a great book in the cottage with the villages of the Luberon listed, and their respective market days, complete with recommended restaurants and attractions. However, if you're also looking for a quiet bolt hole, somewhere to truly unwind and experience French village life, I'd look no further than Rose Cottage. Saignon itself has a patisserie and about four or five great restuarants, and the walks alongside the roads are truly lovely. The views from the top of Saignon are breathtaking, and the photography opportunities abound with Saignon's lovely cobbled alley ways, pretty painted front doors and planter pots, fields of poppies and lavender and distant horizons and the imposing mountains of the Luberon. The history of this fascinating part of France is also very interesting. In short, Rose Cottage in Saignon offers something for everyone.

What can I say. This was the absolutely perfect place to stay. I loved everything about it. My husband, our 5 year old daughter and adult aged daughter stayed here. The location was perfect. All the quaint villages were a close drive. Although the other villages were lovely I loved Saignon best of all. It's quaint, quiet and a beautiful setting. There is a wonderful bakery, a few restaurants. It was great to return to our house and relax, go for a stroll around the village. Our five year old daughter made friends with a border collie local dog who joined us on our evening walks. Now about the cottage. It's beautiful. I felt so comfortable and every detail was thought of to the picnic basket to shopping bags, maps, books, dvd's, bikes with helmets etc..... We visited in August and I was concerned it may be hot without having air conditioning but the cottage was always cool. I loved opening the shutters at night and listening to the water fountain outside the window. I never slept better. Peter was great to deal with. When we arrived there was a bottle of wine and a fresh stick of bread and the music was on. After a long trip from Paris, it was wonderful to relax and unwind. I'm would highly recommend staying here!!!!!! We will be back for sure!

Make points with your spouse or partner by suggesting you stay at Rose Cottage for a week! Repeatedly during our week there (June, 2012) my wife (not known for unmerited praise, or for hyperbole) praised me for my "brilliance" (her word) in finding Rose Cottage. Rose Cottage is a wonderful place to stay and there is no better village to stay in the Luberon than Saignon. We really did try to be objective and everyday, after coming home from Gordes or Bonieux or Lourmarin, etc., etc., we'd still conclude that there was nowhere we'd rather relax for the evening and wake up in the morning than Saignon. Saignon truly is special-- its situation on top of a rock gives it views almost 360 degrees around, and it is amazingly quiet. Our first morning I woke up at 9:00 and realized the only street noise outside was the birds chirping and the public fountain babbling. All that quiet does come with a price: other than great bread and pastries, don't expect to be able to buy much in town (except for some pretty nice straw hats). Apt, however, is five minutes down the hill, and if you arrive on Wednesday without food in the car or a dinner reservation in town, it is easy enough to go into Apt. (It is definitely worth parking in Apt during the daytime and walking into the old center of the City-- it is bustling and interesting and a far cry from the deserted feel it has if you only go there at dinner time.) And with the pastries from Christine's who really needs anything more? It is very easy to use camera angles and lenses to make spaces look bigger than they are and to only show the scenic view out one window while ignoring the cement factory out the other one. Not a worry here: Rose Cottage and Saignon both easily exceeded our expectations. Lots of room at the Cottage, very comfortable beds and sofa, impeccably outfitted kitchen, clean -- even two bikes (with helmets!) in the laundry room. (We never developed the nerve to bike on the small roads of Provence, but it occurred to me after we left that it would have been fun to haul the bikes down to Apt, where you can pick up a bike path that runs all the way to Cavaillon.) An extra bonus is the book of tips about the area compiled (I think) by the Cottage's previous owner, Henrietta. We learned that Henrietta's advice was almost always right on the mark, and visited, to our delight, small towns that were not mentioned in any guide books, and that we never would have visited but for her recommendations
