Beautiful Mini House Cabin - Magazine and TV Profiled

- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:Yes
- Wheel chair accessible:No
This beautiful Mini House is a 285 sq. ft. guest cottage with a sleeping loft. It is an open, light, peaceful and private retreat perfect for up to 3 people. Guests experience a feeling of comfort, simplicity and beauty and consistently feel that they are having a true retreat in their own private oasis. This is a peaceful and relaxing place that delights the senses.
The property is conveniently located just 6.5 miles from the heart of downtown Seattle.
The house features a cozy sleeping loft that is reached by an old ship ladder, with windows that let in the fresh air and look out onto a sunrise over the Cascade Mountain Range. There is also a wood burning stove the keeps the little house cozy in the winter, French doors that open out onto a back patio with a garden and fruit trees, vintage outdoor dining table and chairs, and a soaking tub with a hand held shower in a large, stylish bathroom.
The Mini House was originally a little shack of a garage that Seattle artist, welder and designer Michelle de la Vega designed and built in 2006 and lived in for 5 years. The result was a personal and unique environment made with many found elements, custom made fixtures and salvaged industrial materials.
The house has been featured in the New York Times, MORE Magazine, Western Australian magazine Scoop Homes and Art, several high profile design blogs, as well as Terrance Conran’s book How to Live in Small Spaces and Joanne Palmisano's book Salvage Secrets. It will also be featured in the April 2013 issue of L'Uomo Vogue.

I had two friends coming into Seattle and we decided on this cottage. The three of us had a great stay along with my dog. The location is great and the views of the city when leaving the house are fantastic! There were a few items we had to go purchase due to them not being in the house (toilet paper, laundry detergent, etc) but overall the place was great. I would stay here again! Also, the owner lives directly behind the cottage and is lovely!Recommended for: People with disabilities, age 55+, pet owners, families with young children, sightseeing, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, girls getaway.

Thank you Michelle for opening your home to us. We have been using VRBO for about four years now and have yet to be disappointed. Your ad description was very appropriate. It was perfect for what we were looking for. After spending many of our vacations using VRBO we will never go back to regualr hotel stays. Your home definitely helps with the decision. Thanks again!Owner response: Thanks for staying and being great guests! I hope next time the weather is better for you...but I'm glad you stayed warm and cozy in the bungalow.

Stayed here with two colleagues. Both the main house and mini cottage are clean, comfortable and beautifully decorated, with much of the owners own artwork. The big, open kitchen in the main house is perfect for group meals; the backyard is a great place to relax – the fence and tall hedges allow for much appreciated privacy – and we gladly helped ourselves to some apples and plums from the trees. The location is perfect for driving in and out of downtown Seattle – very easy access to 99, which had surprisingly little traffic in both directions – and it's only a 10 minute drive to the airport. And from the road just in front of the house, you can see all of downtown Seattle. And the owner is a wonderful host. On the website for the property, she lists things to do an see nearby, where to get groceries and where to go out for dinner. We really enjoyed our time here. I highly recommend the Artisan Oasis.Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with teenagers, girls getaway.
Owner response: You guys were so great!! And thank you for the wonderful bottle of wine...I enjoyed it completely!

We absolutely loved staying here, and the owner, her home is a true home and oasis in Seattle, we eagerly look forward to future visits. The back yard is a little garden of Eden and we even heard coyettes yelping at night!! The kitchen space is ideal for those who love to prepare food, like we do and having the car was a blessing. This is without a doubt one of the best places we have ever stayed.!!!Recommended for: Tourists without a car, sightseeing, adventure seekers.
Owner response: Wonderful guests! Loved having you...

My dad, husband, me, and my two boys (8 and 3) stayed for three nights. It was perfect! We had a wonderful time. Easy to get downtown. Really great place to take kids. Beautiful yard. The only downside was the uncharacteristically hot weather for two days and no air conditioner. And that was truly an anomaly for Seattle (I think). Anyway, I would highly recommend this property! Thank you so much Michelle!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, tourists without a car, families with young children, families with teenagers, girls getaway.
Owner response: So glad you enjoyed your stay and thanks for being great guests! Sorry about the heat...although us Seattle folks were basking in it! Michelle

Loved the property! It was a very relaxing stay for our two families. We enjoyed grilling out in the beautiful backyard and our boys ate their fill of raspberries, apples, chives and squash from the garden. Michelle was great to work with and took care of our concerns quickly. We plan on making Seattle a yearly trip and would love to stay here again.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, tourists without a car, families with teenagers.
Owner response: Loved having you guys Janet! Thanks so much.

We rented both cottages and had a wonderful trip. There was enough room for all 6 of us and renting this house was much better than renting hotel rooms. We were all able to spend time together and eat as a family. Quiet, private and cozy. The use of the van was a wonderful bonus. Michelle very attentative to our comfort level and wonderful to work with. We would stay here again.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, tourists without a car, sightseeing, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, girls getaway.
Owner response: Thank you for being wonderful guests. It was a pleasure to host you!

We rented both cottages to attended a family wedding in Seattle. The property was perfect for our needs. It allowed many family members to have a place to stay and the cost, location and overall experience was better than any hotel possible. It was easy access to everywhere and the van included with the rental was a great bonus. The backyard was an enjoyable place to hang out and talk, and the herbs from the fresh garden made our fresh seafood grilling even better. We hope to be able to rent again in the future as we visit our family in the area.Recommended for: Tourists without a car, families with young children, families with teenagers.
Owner response: Thank you so much! I enjoyed hosting you and would be happy to have you back any time. Thanks for being fabulous guests!

We stayed here with the whole family (me, my husband, two kids, parents, sister and brother in law) for two weeks. It was a fabulous set up. A sunny and open place and great, safe, yard for the kids to run around. Relaxing for the adults. Kitchen and kitchenette were great to use and very handy. My husband and I slept in the loft and loved it! So peaceful and lovely. When we walked into the back yard we said "wow"...it has such a great feeling. The whole place has a this feeling. Down to earth but very well designed, truly unique and special. You can tell this place was created by an artist. It's done so well - and we really enjoyed our interaction with the owner. Loved picking veggies in the garden! So tranquil and we hope to come back again. P.S. the car was great and really easy access to town.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, tourists without a car, age 55+, families with young children, sightseeing, adventure seekers, girls getaway.

Year Purchased: 2005
About the owner: Michelle is a Seattle artist, designer and welder. She moved to Seattle to attend Cornish College of the Arts and has been actively involved in the Seattle artist community for the past 20 years. In 2005 she bought this property with the goal of renting out the Main Cottage and turning the tiny shack of a garage into a Mini House for herself to live in. Happily she realized her vision 8 months later. Since then the Mini House has had a plethora of design recognition including an exclusive 3 page article in the New York Times, two notable design books and an appearance on HGTV in 2013. After building the Mini House she set her sights on extensively remodeling the Main Cottage as well, opening up the floor plan and creating a space reflecting the same aesthetic values of reuse, custom built features, and rustic yet clean lines. Michelle has a penchant for re-purposing fixtures and materials, and creating environments that have a unique, personal and peaceful feel. Her current adventure is refurbishing a vintage 1955 Silver Streak Jet trailer. Michelle works out of a welding shop in Seattle's industrial SODO district where she makes sculpture and furniture. http://michelledelavega.com/
Why the Owner Chose Other Seattle Properties:
This was my home for many years. The neighborhood attracts a lot of artists and artisans like me because of it's cultural diversity, urban charm and close proximity to downtown. It's a very down do earth area. I like living around working families and being part of a diverse community. I have been so contented in the neighborhood that I bought a second property here last year that I remodeled as I did this one. I feel very lucky to live in Seattle and it is really fun to host visitors to our beautiful city.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
The property provides very easy access to down town Seattle and is also not far from the airport which makes traveling easy. The house has a rustic modern aesthetic and the yard with vegetable garden and fruit trees is very relaxing. The property has a sunny feeling and a lot of open sky. People feel like they are at a private retreat with everything needed. I designed the hosue and property with the values of simple streamlined functionality and beauty.
