Great group site
Great group site
We had a group of 11 adults and 10 kids for three nights in August. Our time there was great. The space is beautiful and peaceful with great vistas and wonderful landscaping. Many outdoor places to sit and a hammock were highlights. Rogues Hall worked well for us as we did communal meals and the piano got some use too. We hit blackberry season just right, which was a total bonus. Hiking trails around the property got good use. Jaime, the property owner was great to work with too and made our stay very tailored to our needs. I highly recommend what we called "the mountain compound".

Best VRBO we stayed in while on vacation
Best VRBO we stayed in while on vacation
We had a party of 11. 7 in one family, and 4 in another. The party of 7 stayed in 5 vacation homes over the last 2 weeks. Out of all of them, this was our FAVORITE. The owner was super accommodating. You can tell she has pride of ownership of the place. This place is very unique. First, the gardens that surround the place is one of the best I've ever seen. It's a little paradise. Pictures do not do it justice. Second, the caretakers were super nice. Third, the place was great, especially if you like music. 2 kids from one family knew how to play the piano. So they taught the kids from the other family to play. We gently played that very nice piano a ton. Real music flowed. Amazing. Tip, go to the place that the owner recommends for blueberries. We ended up picking some at a closer place first (8 pounds), and then went to the 2nd place. Kids picked 20 pounds at the 2nd place very quickly. They were bigger and basically fell off the bush into your basket. Yes, we had 28 pounds of blueberries. What were we to do, when the kids all brought back basket fulls. We made 4 blueberry pies (owner or caretaker helped us with flour, we gave her a bag of blueberries). We biked all around the place, boy was that fun. We biked down to the 101, that was scary and fun as well, as it is nearly all downhill (car brought us back). So many fun trails, so much to see. We rented everything but the main home. All super clean and the showers were so refreshing. Would love to stay here again. Highly recommended. Note, one couple stayed in Elk (very private), with own bath and shower. All kids (from both families) stayed in Sixes Dorm (which has bathroom and shower). The other couple stayed in one half of Coquille, with Grandma staying in other half of Coquille. Coquille does not have baths/showers, so just expect a little "camping". It wasn't bad at all, just need to have the right mindset. Many times, we just walked to Sixes and used those facilities, as they were closer than the "bathhouse". It was also nice having the Rogue Hall to eat, play games, etc in. We all loved this place. I can still here the piano playing...

Owner response: We really liked knowing this group of families enjoyed the place, local blueberry picking, biking the trails and biking the BIG HILL 4 miles down to hwy. 101! Wow! Also, it was wonderful hearing their children playing the piano...beautiful notes floating over the gardens.
We took a group of about 12 high school students and 10 adults to the Highland Woods Getaway in the end of June. We had an excellent time! This is such a cool facility! Even though all the buildings are old historic buildings, they have been nicely restored and are very well maintained. The grounds are also kept very beautifully and the students had a great time meandering through and eating fresh strawberries. The care takers of the property are very nice and very laid back and accommodating. All in all, I would recommend Highland Woods Getaway to anyone who is considering any type of retreat, reunion or vacation.

Owner response: This was a wonderful group to host. They were very polite, clean, and really seemed to enjoy the place. Even the two babies seemed happy, using the highchair, crib and cross-country stroller we provide!

About the owner: I loved restoring the compound and I really enjoy welcoming guests to it now. In addition, I design landscapes, volunteer with the nearby city of Bandon's park and city tree projects, play the Scottish fiddle with some groups, and totally enjoy being a mom. I grew up in California, but I prefer this wetter ocean/mountain climate. Our dry season (July - September) is a little long for me. I am 52 and have two children who think the compound is a state park! We have a yellow lab who enjoys swims in the ponds and thinks we dug them specially for him. When he camps with us we refer to him as the 'hairy brother'. I studied Landscape Architecture at Cal Poly, SLO, and specialize in restoring historic properties, planning rural landscapes, and designing horse properties. I love music, and the out-doors in many forms, and I really am pleased to share this retreat with others and hear that people have been happy here. Bring your musical instruments along. My friends and I have enjoyed many wonderful outdoor summer jam sessions in the beautiful surroundings on the mountain.
Why the Owner Chose Bandon:
The climate- 70-80 degree summer days up here. Quiet when the coast is windy. I have travelled the world and realize how rare it is to see the forested mountains right up to the ocean beach. I love sharing the beauty of this wild coast and having visitors relax and unwind. As a child we camped near hear and I never forgot the amazing feel of the fresh rejuvenation. It is incredibly scenic and PRIVATE. You can walk the beach and maybe see one other person, then drive 12 miles and enjoy fine dining and world-class art, golf, etc.
The Unique Benefits at this Estate:
This mountain compound really is like your own private state park near two really nice lighthouses and two interesting towns. At the compound you can enjoy the long mowed walking loop through the meadow to the far pond with views to the Pacific, as well as the short, scenic trails in the woods, and numerous lawns and flower gardens. It is a treat to visit the nearby organic farms to pick produce for your meals. There is also local natural beef, poultry, fresh tuna, salmon, crab, shrimp, and honey usually available nearby. The town of Bandon is great for buying fresh fish, shrimp, and crabbing off the dock (they will clean and cook it) for meals, and it has a REAL BOOKSTORE! It also has great restaurants, art galleries, an amazing museum, marina, and shopping. Of course, there is the world class golf course, Bandon Dunes, and the local 9 holes at the Old Bandon Golf Links on the Beach Loop Scenic Drive, as well as the nearby Bandon Crossings Golf Course. Port Orford, 12 miles south has the Red Fish Gallery and restaurant with AMAZING ocean views. Our Highland Woods property is near a lot of neat stuff to do and eat!
