Dear Paynes, We had a wonderful vacation. The house and the view were perfect. We enjoyed all of the games on the property--badminton, horse shoes, volleyball and the board games. The fire pit at night was perfect for roasting marshmallows. We rented a canoe from Riverside Outfitters for the week. It was perfect floating around here and then we did an 8 ½ mile float from 58 to Riverside--tons of fun and beautiful view. One afternoon, we drove down to NC and visited Shelton Vineyards and Harvest Grill for dinner. Beautiful. Our favorite was sitting on the deck enjoying a drink listening to music and watching the people pass by on boats. Your place is lovely. We hope to come back soon.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

We enjoyed our stay at Misty River Retreat. It is very private, quiet, very clean, and has a nice view of the river. There is penty to do at the house but the Galax/Fries area has many things to see and do. We especially enjoyed biking the New River Trail.Did you find this review helpful? My wife and I stayed here for the Memorial Day Weekend with the hopes of enjoying the area and recharging our batteries. Mission accomplished! The home is comfortable and well stocked with everything you need for your visit. We found the house and grounds clean and the owners available via phone for area info if needed. This house is well sized for a couple or a family and there is something to do for everyone. Games, books and satellite TV are supplied but we were outside most of the time. Unlike some rentals, the property is private and secluded. We enjoyed bicycling on the 39 mile New River Trail, and canoeing on the New River but our best moment was probably reading by the river in the hammocks. Fries (say it Freeze) is a town that time has forgotten and for so many reasons it is worth seeing. Fries is full of railroad, manufacturing/industrial and musical history. The town has a delicious Southwestern restaurant and Galax is close by if you want variety.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

My husband, my 10 yr old and her bff and I vacationed at Misty River Retreat. It was a wonderful 4 days of relaxation and fun. There are plenty of things to do in the area, or for that matter, at the house! The house sits just a few yards from the New River. The children were enthralled with the two playhouses on the property. Special touches were evident, a small couch in one of the houses, flowers in the flower boxes and both were situated near the lovely creek on the property. Many toys were around both of the playhouses. The main house was full of extra touches- the master was done tastefully in white, black and lavender. It has a large sliding glass door and screen with a small balcony for early morning coffee. There is also a smaller bedroom on the main floor. The lower floor is especially geared towards children with several couches, a double bed and many books and games. The main level has a large area with a mega table for family meals and times. The kitchen was well-equipped with everything including a washer and dryer. It does not have a dishwasher. The best part of the property is the peacefulness and tranquility. The back yard is the perfect place for reading a book in the hammocks,. meals at the picnic table, roasting smores in the fire pit or just casting from the water's edge. The house also has an outdoor room with a gas grill, outdoor furniture and awesome views. We will definitely be back with our college age kids. There is a volleyball court, the New River Trail, fishing in a plethora of places, tubing, kayaking and attending one of Grayson County's blue grass festivals or jams. This property has a little bit of peace that every age needs.Owner response: We're pleased that you enjoyed your stay and look forward to your future visit! Thanks for pointing out the need for a dishwasher. We just had a brand new one installed. We also wanted to mention that the downstairs bed is a queen size.

This was a perfect spot for our family vacation this year. Our ten and eleven year old had a great time fishing from the riverbank, as well as, playing in the creek. Nearby we found tube and kayak rental, as well as, great bike riding on the New River Trail. In the nearby town of Galax we checked out some unique shops and enjoyed The Smokehouse restaurant so much we ate there three times. All in all, a really nice vacation.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, sightseeing.

Choosing the perfect location for my very active father's 80th birthday celebration was very important. . . . and Misty River Retreat was perfect! Harrison graciously greeted my father and brothers upon their arrival and treated them as if family! The bicycle riders were able to easily access the New River Trail approximately 1 mile away. The fisherman among us was able to fish to his heart's content in the shade on the banks of the New River, stone's throw away from this unique home. Those who didn't bike or fish played horseshoes or relaxed in one of the hammocks beside the river. All my family members kept commenting that it was the perfect house! A very enjoyable experience for my father was cooking and eating breakfast in the outdoor kitchen on the top level of the home, overlooking the early morning river views. This is a fabulous home and we can't wait to return!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, romantic getaway.

We spent 5 nights here at the Misty River Retreat and found it to be very relaxing. Actually we hardly left the house because most everything we wanted to do was right here! We could fish in the river, play in the creek, play volleyball, lay on the hammocks, read a book, roast marshmallows in the campfire... the list goes on. The kids had fun especially playing in the creek and playhouses or simply just scavenging for worms. The location is perfect because you are far away from the busy world, but close enough so that you can get to the grocery store in 15-20 min. On top of all these things, the owner was very helpful and easy to work with. I highly recommend this location for your next vacation!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, pet owners, sightseeing.

We had our Labor Day weekend at the Misty River Retreat. This place was by far one of the nicest rental properties I have rented. Our daughter and family live in FL and we live in PA. Fries, Galex area was halfway. When we found out it was available we were so excited to have this be our meeting place. We were greeted by the owners parents who showed us around, and made us feel welcome. The place was very clean and full of ammenities that we could use. Even a pizza oven that next time we will take advantage of. We loved cooking on the grill in the summer kitchen, it is a great gathering place after a long day of making memories and fishing. My grandkids had so much fun.. loved the river and all the toys and playhouses. And we celebrated our grandsons birthday on Sunday night after baking his cake that day. Our weekend was outstanding and I think part of it had to do with your beautiful home. Thanks again for all the hospitality and use of your home.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, families with young children, romantic getaway.

Our family had a great time at Misty River Retreat! The house was very clean and well-stocked with everything you might need. Even though we needed to dodge some raindrops, we had a great time kayaking, biking, swimming, floating, fishing and playing volleyball. Wish we could have stayed longer. It is in a great location for exploring the New River, area, yet very private and relaxing. Shannon and her family were very accomodating.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, romantic getaway.

My husband, son, daughter-in-law, and I just spent a week at Misty River Retreat and had a wonderful time. The house and property were exactly as described by the owner. Being met on our arrival by Harrison and Linda made us feel very welcomed. They are an extremely nice and helpful couple who went out of their way to be sure we had everything we needed. We caught fish every day we were here and were able to have fresh fish for supper 3 nights of our stay. The suggestions for recreation and dining were extremely helpful. We ate at the Galax Smokehouse and will dine there again if we are in the area. I strongly recommend this rental for any one who loves nature, fishing, floating, and privacy.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with young children, pet owners.

I had looked at several vacation rentals before deciding on which one would best suit our needs. I wanted to spend a few days with my cousins, my brother, and our families after our family reunion, so we needed plenty of space. Living in different states, CO, VA, & WVA, we rarely see each other. Privacy was another concern because I knew that some of us would want to stay up late to catch up without disturbing anyone. Misty River Retreat offered both and so much more. When I was ready to make the reservation, I called Shannon and asked several questions. She answered all of them and sent even more information by email. She was so helpful and friendly over the phone I felt that this was the right place for us. We had a bit of a drive from where we were, so I knew it might be late when we got there. The owners said that this wasn’t a problem, all we needed to do is call them an hour before we arrive and they would meet us there. When we arrived, Harrison and Linda welcomed us and gave me a short tour around the house to let us know where everything was. They are such a delightful couple and so accommodating. This unique property is clean and well kept. My favorite part of the house is the front deck. The table was large enough to seat all of us comfortably. There’s a nice gas grill, a countertop space with decorative lighting, and a little bell to ring at the top of the stairs leading down to the backyard to let everyone know when it’s time to eat. Because we arrived at night, we hadn’t yet seen the view of the river. When we woke up the next morning, we were pleasantly surprised. We gravitated toward the deck to enjoy coffee before breakfast. The cool, but gentle mountain breeze blending with the aroma of fresh brewed coffee seemed to enhance its flavor. Sun rise was like a stage curtain that gradually opened to reveal the first act of the day, a stunning view of nature. The calm of the river reflected its surroundings and echoed the movements of wildlife along its banks. These sights and sounds of nature were awesomely entertaining. Thank you Payne family for sharing this wonderful property that appears to match who you are. This pleasurable experience with my family has brought us closer and will be a treasured memory from now on.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway.

We had a great time. Caught a few fish, hiked in the woods, and spent a lot of quality time with the kids. The Davis-Bourne Inn was very nice and made for a memorable Thanksgiving meal. We also spent an afternoon in Galax hitting the downtown coffee house, bookstore, and barbecue restaurant, which was very good. Your in-laws couldn't have been nicer. Thank you and we hope to visit again in the Spring/Summer.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

My husband and I had some vacation time coming from work and a friend recommended the Misty River Retreat in Fries, VA. We were fortunate that it was available when we had our vacation time. We just returned yesterday and wished we would have had more time off. There’s always next year and we are definitely going to return and stay longer! We cannot say enough wonderful things about this retreat. We did not lack for anything to do. We especially enjoyed the early mornings sitting on the deck with a cup of coffee and the evenings were so romantic. We’d sit on the deck and watch the sunset with a glass of wine. If you want to get away from it all – don’t think twice about it – go to the Misty River Retreat. Even if you have children, don’t hesitate – take them along - you will all enjoy yourselves. A special thank you to the owners – we couldn’t be more pleased!!!!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, people with disabilities, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Some friends and myself ( 8 of us in all), spent two nights and three days in this lovely home. We had an amazing time. The house was well equipped with everything we needed, in fact we cooked all of our meals in house. The view of the river was beautiful and most of our time was spent either swimming (although it was a bit cold), reading by the lake, or just relaxing in the sun. If you want to get away and just be surrounded by the peace and tranquility of nature, this is the place for you.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with young children, romantic getaway.

We spent a 4-day weekend at Misty River Retreat and found the house extremely clean and the view of the river absolutely calming. We opened the balcony door at night and listened to the sound of silence. It was refreshing. It rained one day while we were there but we found it quite tranquil to just laze in the house and read books (there are plenty downstairs) or chat with each other. What a nice getaway.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, sightseeing.

Well we arrived and we were blown away by the beauty of the place. It was serene and quiet and the river, well needless to say, it was calling and my daughter and husband answered the call with their fishing poles. We ate at the Galax Smokehouse one day, and oh my it was great. All in all we had a great stay though we are leaving a day early--guess we are missing home. The only complaint I have is that we never figured out how to get the DVD player to work so that we could watch the movies we brought. Maybe some instructions on what to do to play the DVD would be my suggestion. Had a great time and we'll try to come back in the Fall for a weekend getaway if all goes as planned. Oh, a couple of frying pans would have been good too. Thanks!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

I highly recommend Misty River Retreat as the perfect place to get away and relax. The cabin has all the amenities you will need and plenty of room. It's very private with breath taking views everywhere you look. The property is well maintained and professionally run with the focus being you, the vacationer. I especially like to sit on the deck while reading a good book - listening to the gentle sounds of the water. Hiking is great with plenty of private land for your enjoyment. We also enjoy canoeing up the river.
