Saugatuck cottage description
** Note: we start taking reservations for summer 2014 in January **
Rustic and charming cottage right on Lake Michigan. Sunsets in the evening, star gazing at night. Fires on the beach. Bike riding through the orchards and around the country roads.
If you prefer remote and quite, this is your place for respite.
The cottage comes with million dollar views although this is not a million dollar cottage. This is an old fashioned cottage with old cottage smell until the windows are opened. There is no internet and no TV. One often has to walk 100 yards or more up the road to get cell phone connectivity. Like many other teenagers, our children love their social media and Internet-based games. When they come to the cottage, however, they end up being outside all day and reading books in the evening. When they need the Internet they ride bikes (provided at the cottage) to a village 2 miles away that has a cafe and Internet.
Although the location is remote, the twin-towns of Saugatuck and Douglas are not far away. Here, there are fantastic restaurants, dozens of art galleries, charter boating, film festivals, and so much more.
The Wau-ke-na nature preserve is also close and provides a great place to hike in the forests when one needs a break from all the sun and sand. A few tents are available at the cottage. These are wonderful for camping on the beach up or on the bluff. Sometimes it fun just to set up a tent for children to play with.
If you like wine tasting, there are a plenty of vineyards and a few open wine cellars where you can sample the products. Closest to the cottage is Fenn Valley Wine Cellar.
The cottage has a binder with information and descriptions of many of the local attractions. We enjoy them all, but most of all the cottage is about respite and doing little or nothing.

Permission for pets must be approved by owners. Generally speaking, cats are welcome. Dogs can be a problem since the cottage has carpeting. Small, short-haired dogs that have the sand washed off them before they come inside may be OK. No wet or sandy pets allowed inside or on any of the indoor or outdoor furniture. Please discuss with owners....moreless
Not Suitable For Children:
Parents should know that the cottage is on a steep bluff. There are 3 to 6 ft drop offs at a few sections along the edge of the lawn with no railing. These areas can be roped off, but this is not a railing. The stairs to the beach have some railings. It is not easy to relax with small children running around the yard, so we advise against this....moreless

Fantastic Get Away

My husband, teenage son, and I spent the first week of August in this cottage and had a very relaxing week. We were greeted with a personal note, bottle of wine, and fire ready to light on the beach. The view can't be beat and sleeping on the porch, listening to the sounds of the waves crashing on the beach might have been my favorite part of the cottage. We had a couple days of rain, but the cottage is well stocked with books and games and lighting the fireplace made for a very cozy day.

Relaxing holidays with a great view
Relaxing holidays with a great view
We stayed at the cottage for 9 days and it was an absolutely great time. The listing description was accurate, the property was clean and well-maintained and the owners Gary and Anna are very, very helpful already before we stayed in the cottage. We got a lot of informations from them about the area and anything else we wanted to know. Because we are from Germany, it was difficult to get a cottage at Lake Michigan and Gary was very helpful !!!!! Our sons (13 and 10 years old) didn`t miss internet or television at the cottage, because we had so much fun at the beach and at the cozy cottage. During the day we relaxed at the beach, swimming, reading a book or anything else. In the evening we made campfire at the beach and enjoyed the wonderful sunset. We hope we will come back in the next years to enjoy this beautiful place and this cozy little cottage once again.Thank you for everything!!!!!

Fully stocked, calm, and gorgeous!
Fully stocked, calm, and gorgeous!
My girlfriend and I went out on a Tuesday night in May. We arrived to find a meticulously prepared ‘cottage checklist,’ fire ready to light, plenty of books to peruse, and most importantly, a beautiful view of the sun setting over Lake Michigan! We enjoyed the view while enjoying a bottle of wine, bread, and cheese on the Adirondack chairs on the bluff. The kitchen was fully stocked with everything you might need for a family vacation or romantic getaway—french press, kettle, wine opener, can opener, pots & pans, measuring cups, casserole dishes— anything you need you could find there. There were also plenty of cups, glasses, mugs, plates (real and paper), silverware, etc. The yard is perfect for relaxation. We saw quite a bit of small wildlife –chipmunks and rabbits scurrying across the yard, butterflies flitting around, and beautiful birds for those of you birdwatchers. The sounds of the calm lake are so relaxing, you can find yourself sitting back in the Adirondacks overlooking the lake, and just enjoying the peace, quiet, and view. There is a freshly built and painted set of stairs that lead down to the pristine, private beach. Although the water and air were a bit too cold for us to enjoy the lake water in May, we took our morning coffee down to the beach to soak up some sun. On a Wednesday morning in late May, we felt completely secluded—there was no one as far as the eye could see. I couldn’t think of a better way to enjoy my morning coffee! The cottage is a bit rustic, but also has many amenities and comforts of home. There is a beautiful brick fireplace, but there are also heaters to keep the house warm at night, and there is a window unit for hot summer days. The air off the lake was cool and fresh in May, but I’m guessing those of you looking to stay here in July or August might want to make use of the AC. There is a queen bed on the enclosed porch, bunk beds in the bedroom, and a twin bed in an alcove in the living room. There are curtains to pull around the alcove if you want more privacy. Many thanks to Gary and Anna for making this cottage available! It’s a beautiful cottage on a beautiful stretch of beach! I am sure you will enjoy staying here as much as we did!
