Property description

A private rural retreat located in the enchanted high desert forest of northern New Mexico, this beautiful abode is tucked away amongst old-growth junipers and piñon pines. If you like being in nature, but prefer not to rough it much, this place is for you. A sense of serenity is pervasive as you wind your way through the compound. You will notice the retreat is designed for you to deepen your connection with the land and allow the tensions from daily life to dissolve. The property itself is on 32 acres, with 2 hiking loops in the natural surroundings.

LOCATION: The town (village is more like it), consists of about 150 residents, a general store and a post office. The three miles of dirt roads to the retreat are passable year-round and give the feeling that you are 'out there'. A 4-wheel drive vehicle is recommended in the snow and in the springtime mud. Although television is non-existent and cell service is sketchy, there is WiFi at the Main House, as well as a land line. If you'd like some off-site adventure, Taos is 40 minutes away, and Santa Fe is about an hour and a half. The Ski Valley is one hour door-to-door, and Ojo Caliente Spa and Mineral Springs are within a 25 minutes. You can visit ancient Indian cliff dwellings, hike in the mountains or on the mesa, and river-raft in the Rio Grande Gorge.

ACCOMMODATIONS for up to 25, (15 beds total). The Main House & 4 Casitas (little houses):

The Main House, (1800+ square feet): 3 bedrooms, a full bathroom, a half bath upstairs, a kiva-style living room w/ wood stove/fireplace, a dining room that seats 14, and a well-equipped kitchen. This house sleeps 8, (6 twin beds + 1 full).

The Straw Bale Casita: a one-room straw bale bungalow with a queen bed and half bath. Sleeps 2.

The Adobe Casita: a one-room adobe bungalow with a queen bed. Sleeps 2. (There is no plumbing in this little building. The Main House is about 50 steps away).

The Stick Casita: is a little house w/ 1 bedroom with 2 twin beds as well as another twin bed in the living room. There is a full bathroom in this cute little abode. Sleeps 3.

The Q: is a beautiful 1200 sf adobe house with a full bath and kitchen. This house sleeps 4-6. In addition to the king bed, the 2 comfortable sofa-beds can fit 2 small people each. This house has an open floor plan with a sleeping alcove. (There are no actual bedrooms.)

The 2 Tipis sleep 2-3 each, (bring your sleeping bag)!

There is another full bathroom in the Studio as well as an additional shower.

The surrounding landscape is natural, with a large fenced area and gravel walkways at the Main House. We recommend an incredible cook and other services such as massage, yoga, music, and clairvoyant readings.

So whether or not you want local art, active adventure, indigenous culture, or a relaxing soak, every evening you will find yourself in the peaceful quietude of the surrounding forest and its natural inhabitants. This is an excellent getaway for groups, families, or harried individuals in search of peace.

Owner info

Year Purchased: 2010

About the owner: I'm originally from the East Coast, and I fell in love with northern NM on my first visit here in 1990. I'm an interior designer and artist by profession. I enjoy hiking, camping, skiing, rafting, and all of the arts. Museums, galleries, cafés, and restaurants are also high on my list of fun activities. I have travelled extensively in the US, as well as Europe, Asia, Central America, and most recently, South America. I love exploring new lands and cultures, and coming home to the peace and serenity of Carson.

Why the Owner Chose Carson:
I chose to create a vacation rental retreat in northern New Mexico primarily because of the amazing land and its location. Over 20 years ago I was drawn to purchase property here in Carson, knowing that one day I would make this place my home. The remote, peaceful location provides a respite for the most harried of people. And, it's also a wonderful spot for those who want a variety of day trips and activities. The location of Vista Verde Retreat is ideal. Taos and Santa Fe have many unique draws for tourists who love the Southwest: shopping, gallery touring, dining, the Pueblo. The local culture is flavorful. For the more outdoorsy types, rafting, skiing, and hiking provide plenty of exercise and magnificent views. Soaking in the nearby mineral springs is a great way to end, (or start) any day. The location and layout of this property is ideal for a family or group with diverse interests, or for those who want no activity at all.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
I love this property because it's so serene and so rural. Surrounded by national forest, it's located amidst beautiful old-growth juniper and piñon pine trees. The nearby mountains provide an incredible backdrop. When I need an 'urban' fix, Taos is less than 40 minutes by car, and Santa Fe is about 90 minutes. Love it!
