Vista Verde Retreat: Escape from the Ordinary in the Southwest

A private rural retreat located in the high desert of northern New Mexico, this beautiful abode is tucked away in an old-growth juniper and piñon pine forest. If you like being in nature, but don't like to rough it too much, this place is for you. A sense of serenity is pervasive as you wind your way through the compound. You will notice the retreat is designed for you to deepen your connection with the land and allow the tensions from daily life to dissolve.
The town (village is more like it), consists of about 150 residents, a general store and a post office. The property itself is on 32 acres. The Main House is over 1800 square feet, with full kitchen, dining room, and living room, plus 3 bedrooms, 1 full bath, and 1 half bath. Two 'casitas', (little houses), are located a short distance away: the Adobe Casita is a one-room adobe structure; and the Strawbale Casita is a two-room straw bale building. There is a full bathroom with shower plus an additional shower located in the Studio nearby, as well as the bathrooms in the Main House mentioned above. Additionally, there are two other accommodations within a short distance: the Stick Casita has one bedroom with 2 twin beds as well as a queen futon sleeper in the living room. There is a shower and a sink in this casita and an outhouse nearby. (Or you can use the Main House or Studio toilets). The other accommodation, called 'The Q', is a 1200 sf adobe house with a full bath and kitchen. This house sleeps 4 – it has an open floor plan with a sleeping alcove. (There are no actual bedrooms.) The surrounding landscape is natural, with a large fenced area and gravel walkways at the Main House. We also have an incredible cook whom I highly recommend for groups of more than 6. You can choose a plan with 1 or 2 meals per day.
The three miles of dirt roads to the retreat are passable year-round and give the feeling that you are 'out there'. A 4-wheel drive vehicle is recommended in the snow and in the springtime mud. Although television is non-existent and cell service is sketchy, there is WiFi at the Main House, as well as a land line. If you'd like some off-site adventure, Taos is 40 minutes away, and Santa Fe is about an hour and a half. The Ski Valley is one hour door-to-door, and Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs are very close. You can visit ancient Indian cliff dwellings, hike in the mountains or on the mesa, and river-raft in the Rio Grande Gorge. For a reasonable fee, we also offer guided hikes, trips to natural hot springs along the river, yoga classes on site, and even some good local entertainment.
So whether or not you want local art, active adventure, indigenous culture, or a relaxing soak, every evening you will find yourself in the peaceful quietude of the surrounding forest and its natural inhabitants. This is an excellent getaway for groups, families, or harried individuals in search of peace.

What a great place to be! You really can escape from everything. Elizabeth has not missed any details and you will want for nothing. The rooms are so nice in the big house and also the bunk areas. There is plenty of space for you to relax and enjoy your surroundings. She also has a great dance/pilates studeo that is very spacious. I can not wait to bring my friends to such a wonderful place! Enjoy!Recommended for: Girls getaway, age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, sightseeing, families with teenagers.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2010
About the owner: Originally from the East Coast, I fell in love with northern NM upon my first visit twenty years ago. I'm an interior designer and artist by profession. I enjoy hiking, camping, skiing, rafting, and all of the arts. Museums, galleries, cafés, and restaurants are also high on my list of fun activities. I have travelled extensively in the US, as well as Europe, Asia, and Central America. My next travel destination is South America. I love exploring new lands and cultures.
Why the Owner Chose Carson:
I chose to buy a vacation rental in northern New Mexico for two reasons. First, the remote, peaceful location provides a respite for the most harried of people. Second, it's in a wonderful spot for those who want a variety of day trips and activities. Taos and Santa Fe have many unique draws for tourists who love the Southwest: shopping, gallery touring, dining, the Pueblo. The local culture is flavorful. For the more outdoorsy types, rafting, skiing, and hiking provide plenty of exercise and magnificent views. Soaking in the nearby mineral springs is a great way to end, (or start) any day. The location and layout of this property is ideal for a family or group with diverse interests, or for those who want no activity at all.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
I love this property because it's so remote and so rural. Surrounded by national forest, it's located amidst beautiful old-growth juniper and piñon pine trees. The nearby mountains provide an incredible backdrop. When I need an 'urban' fix, Taos is less than 40 minutes by car, and Santa Fe is a little over an hour.
