Union house description
We invite you to enjoy our secluded, peaceful, custom house in scenic Northeastern Oregon. The handcrafted house is conveniently located in the foothills of the Wallowa Mountains, the Western gateway to the Eagle Cap Wilderness. Hiking, fishing, skiing, and mountaineering opportunities abound. Wildlife roams in profusion. The Wallowas and the Elkhorn Crest provide excellent backcountry skiing opportunities. For a more civilized skiing experience the Anthony Lakes ski area is only about 50 minutes away and provides maintained Nordic trails and alpine skiing. The town of Union is six miles away, with its collection of Victorian homes, the Hot Lake Hot Springs and a most charming Victorian cemetery. La Grande and Baker City are also nearby. On the other side of the Wallowas, Hells Canyon and the Joseph/Enterprise area provide additional recreational opportunities.
SKIERS! Please ask about half price lift ticket vouchers for the Anthony Lakes ski area. We will offer up to one for each guest for each day you stay. This offer begins Thanksgiving Day, and is valid until Anthony Lakes closes for the season, or we run out of vouchers.
The area affords ORV opportunities. If you wish to bring your vehicles, please do not ride them on the property.
The house itself is like no other. The home has been remodeled with custom detail. The gleaming wood floors have inlaid patterns, the cathedral ceilings are open beam, and the kitchen is open to the house for easy interactions with family and friends. The bedrooms boast window seats which may urge you to indulge in a good read. On a cool evening relax by the gas fireplace, or stoke up the woodstove. In another mood, enjoy the hot tub on the porch while you gaze across the valley. The house sits on its own 48 acres, so you will have to look sharply to see another house! Deer, elk and other wildlife are plentiful and roam the hillside and meadow.
Kids are welcome at the house, but if you have very small children we may want to talk. The house is not in any way child-proofed. It has a shower, but no tub for splashing little ones in, and the stairs to the loft are not for playing on. We want you to enjoy your stay, so please keep this in mind. No pets are allowed.

The Haines House is a wonderful combination of log cabin, contemporary appointments and artisan craftsmanship. The seclusion and quiet make it ideal for romantic or get-away-from-it-all escapes. The night sky from the hot tub is AWESOME! A definite do-over.

Owner response: We are so pleased you had a good time! We are actually the Sintons, but if anyone wants to think of us as the Haines house that's fine by us. We have made the decision to keep the hot tub filled and ready for the winter, so everyone can continue to enjoy the night sky in comfort. Come back soon!

We loved this house. It was in the perfect location for our annual family get together. It could have used a couple of more actual beds, but the owner was very helpful and accomodating.

Owner response: We are always pleased to hear the house provided a pleasant stay. For larger groups, overflow onto the futons is rather inevitable. We do provide air mattresses also, and recommend placing the mattress on a futon for more comfort. If anyone is concerned about sleeping space I am happy to discuss the accommodations.
This place is gorgeous! The location us stunning and totally private, and the house is so beautiful. It was very clean and the desription was totally accurate. Konny and Greg were very helpful and responsive before our stay and they leave a very useful house manual. I think others have mentioned that the only thing we found lacking was a really comfy place to sit. The house is so amazing but doesn't look very lived-in. All the chairs are a bit rigid. As comfy couch lovers we felt like a couple of really good sofas or armchairs would make a huge difference. The hot tub was great and we enjoyed watching all the birds from the back porch. The kitchen is well-stocked and there are plenty of linens/towels/blankets. This was a wonderful place for my husband and I to celebrate our 10 yr anniversary.

We loved Wilderness Decadence vacation rental. We are so glad we found it on VRBO, and we hope to return next year. The area and the house are even more beautiful than the pictures show. We only wish we had been able to stay longer.

Owner response: Hearing how much you enjoyed your stay always makes us very happy. We certainly do hope you will return soon -- the autumn and winter are also lovely seasons in that area.
We spent 1 night here and had a nice stay. The description and photos were accurate and the property was very clean and well maintained. The owner was very prompt and helpful in responding to questions before we arrived. I would recommend it to other people, but would be cautious about saying it can accommodate 6-8 people It's better for 4 adults and a few kids because there are 3 bedrooms but only two have beds; one has no bed but a window seat. The loft has a futon and inflatable mattresses, which are fine for kids but a bit uncomfortable for adults. Also, there is only one shower, so can be a little busy with 6-8 guests. The house could use more comfortable seating space--it has one sofa, two upholstered chairs, and dining room chairs. We also couldn't find a toaster, so that's something that would be helpful in the kitchen. It's a quiet location and offers great viewing of the night sky and stars because it's so far from city lights. The hot tub was nice, and we enjoyed Buffalo Peak Golf Course and got tasty sandwiches in the Stoplight Cafe and good coffee at Aggie's.

Owner response: We are glad you had a nice stay. You are correct about putting in a toaster -- in fact, I will have one in the house tomorrow. We haven't owned the house long and are trying to furnish it comfortably but intentionally. It does, at present, accommodate about 4 adults most comfortably, but I have included possible children in the number of total people it may hold. We are looking at some furnishing for the empty room, which will add a bed. At present, we have considered the two regular bedrooms, plus the loft, as 3 sleeping spaces, and I have tried to counsel interested guests that part of the arrangements are the futon and air mattresses in the loft. Thanks for your remarks.
Sunbathing and stargazing
Sunbathing and stargazing
This property was a cozy, private spot for a few days of relaxation. The house and covered porches stayed cool in the blazing summer heat, and the ridges separating the property from the village of Union let the sky get very dark for stargazing. The house and lawn are well above the road, and isolated from anyone's view - excellent for sunbathing. The house itself is a little bit quirky, but very clean and well-maintained, and comfortable for our small party of adult friends - I would definitely stay here again. The owners were very helpful in providing directions (especially for finding the nondescript driveway) and info about the house and the resources available in Union and La Grande. For future visitors: For a winter/skiing visit, be prepared for a steep grade on the gravel drive up from the road. In the summertime, consider bringing a bike - the roads around Union are scenic, well-paved, and lightly populated with vehicle traffic. The house seems to be accessible - there are some steps up from the decks/lawn, but several paths with ramps. (That said, there is only a shower, and if grab bars are important to you this is not the place to stay). The TV area is in a loft upstairs, but the principal living spaces of the house are on a single level.

This house was so incredible! The view was breathtaking! My husband and I spent our anniversary here and it was the best one yet! We could have set on the porch for hours taking in the beauty and the sound of the birds. It sets off of the road w/totally privacy yet its not far from town. The inside had my dream kitchen and everything was open and inviting. We will definitely take a trip back and take our 4 children w/us! It would be great for couples, family vacation, a girls weekend or anything .The price was definitely more for your money! I can't wait for our next visit! Oh and one last thing, they knew it was our Anniversary and they left us a note and a bottle of wine! How sweet is that!! Very nice people! Thank you for letting us enjoy your little piece of Heaven!
