We offer an airy ground floor apartment, in the home where we live. Walk down the rock stair path through the gardens to your private entrance. The oversized windows bring the outdoors inside.
We live in a uniquely sited place that will soothe your spirit. Come to write, to explore, to read, to unwind.
Our home sits on the edge of Forest Park in NW Portland, which makes it feels as if you were miles and miles from no-where, and yet is 5 minutes by car from the night-life and shops of the Nob Hill area, and the city public transit system.
The apartment.... Walk into the great-room. It has an office working area and dining area at one end and a living-room area with gas fireplace and HD TV at the other. The couch converts to a queen futon bed at night, if needed.
Go up the steps to the bedroom with queen sized bed. The bathroom has tub and shower, and the floor is heated.
This apartment is self catered. You walk up another short flight of steps to the kitchenette, with a 4 burner propane stove top, a microwave/convection oven, and an under counter refrigerator. The U-shaped kitchen has bamboo countertops.
The kitchenette also has a washer and dryer.
The house uses a satellite dish for its internet- there is a five second delay built into any transmission, and a household system limit on downloading of 500 MB per day - So please: no movies, major software downloads, or gaming. It is sometimes effected by bad weather.
The house also uses a satellite for TV; a DVR makes recording shows possible, but it has no internet connection for gaming or on-demand movies.
There is one parking space available to you.
Housekeeping services can be arranged.

I rented this B&B for a Month. Margie is amazing! the property is absolutely beautiful and serene. The west hills of Portland are truly a magical escape. The house is very well appointed and cozy. Every morning I was greeted by Addy the resident 4 legged friend. Hummingbirds buzzing around my head. I couldn't have had a better stay. Thank you!Recommended for: Age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, sightseeing.
Owner response: Staying a month means you really get to know whether a space "works" for you or not. Close in to the city, yet it feels like Mt. Hood! Guests here, whether for a week or a month treasure the privacy this place affords. We live here too, but enough apart to be able to help when we can, and be out of sight the rest of the time. Come. Stay. Here.

We had the pleasure of staying in Margie and David's apartment for 3 nights. It truly is the best of both worlds with the close proximity to the city for exploring, yet such a lovely quiet place to return to at the end of the day (with Addie waiting in the driveway to welcome us home each time). Having the park with great running trails at the top of the driveway was an added bonus. The apartment and it's amenities far exceeded our expectations in every way. Margie and David were excellent hosts with many suggestions of things to do and see in the city...unfortunately the lure of Portland's food scene kept sidetracking us and we spent the majority of our holiday either eating or planning our next meal! We would love to come and stay again to see the other sights of Portland and would highly recommend it to any friends or relatives heading down that way.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: So Much Food! So little Time.. Portland DOES have a fabulous food scene.. from the food cart pods found all over the city, to the 5 star intimate restaurants. BUT even with all that, having a kitchen to make breakfast or to keep a couple of local microbrews cold is a real plus to renting the apartment. AND the hiking/running trails just up the driveway mean you can eat to your hearts content and then have a great outdoor workout! Come. Stay. Here.

Thank you, Margie and David, for helping make our trip so pleasurable. We felt right at home as soon as we arrived. This was our first trip to Portland and it really was like a home away from home. Margie and David are very knowledgeable about Portland and the surrounding area. They really helped us with the details of what to see and how to get around. Their home is in an amazing location. Surrounded by the largest urban park in the US, you are in a forest abundant with wildlife, while having all of the advantages of the city just a short drive away. The apartment was better than we expected. The apartment is on the ground level and very private. It was nicely appointed with all the conveniences you need when you travel. We will be staying here again when we return to Portland and recommending this apartment to our friends.Recommended for: Age 55+, adventure seekers, families with young children, sightseeing.
Owner response: We appreciate feedback! If something you need is NOT in the apartment, let us know! We've tried to "think like a guest" and provide everything we might wish for, BUT there's always room for new ideas! AND because we live here too, we can respond quickly... Hiking maps? Suggestions for dinner? Favorite Winery loop drive? Bike rental? Quirky art gallery? Just ask!

Margie and Dave are wonderful hosts. Perfect balance: We felt very well cared-for, but our privacy was respected. We had our own floor! Great location: forested, yet close to downtown. Our lodgings definitely exceeded expectations. They even had a small gift basket of treats for us in the room when we arrived! We really can't say enough about this place -- if we were in Portland again, we'd stay in an instant. Thanks, Margie and David! P.S. As they are very clear in the description, internet is on satellite, so don't expected to be "connected" while you're there. But who cares?! That's the whole point!Did you find this review helpful? Margie, David, Thank you so much for making our stay and vacation so easy, smooth and wonderful. When I think of it, it was really perfect: so convenient to be so close the class as well:) My husband, Mathis and Axel enjoyed their vacation so much and only wished it could have lasted longer! They did a lot of sports, outside activities and overall being with nature! Mathis and Axel enjoyed your company a lot and of course Addie's! I think they really need a dog: when I ask what was their favorite part of the vacation, they said unanimously: Addie!!! Your apartment was perfect and very comfortable. We could not have picked a better place to stay!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

A beautiful site, a lovely apartment, and gracious owners. Margie and David were warm, welcoming, and very knowledgeable about the region. I especially enjoyed hiking and birding tips. The apartment is very beautifully appointed and comfortable. I highly recommend this property.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, families with young children, sightseeing.
Owner response: The apartment looks out into the woods, at ground level. A three basalt tower fountain has adirondack chairs and a picnic table nearby for summer enjoyment and relaxation. The propane fireplace in the living room area warms the soul on the cool nights during the rest of the year. We welcome anyone looking for a bit of peace and calm in a crazy world. While designed for 2 people (the bathroom is reached through the bedroom), the apartment has a couch that converts to a second queen-sized bed, and a family of 4 can function easily. Hiking trails are right outside your door... you can walk for 30 minutes or run 30 miles on the trails of Forest Park! Come. Stay. Here.

About the owner: Goethe wrote, and I wholeheartedly believe: 'Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.' I thoroughly enjoy meeting people, and we have developed friends all over the world. A favorite place is The Netherlands where we once lived, and I dream of returning to Australia for an extended stay. I really enjoy ocean kayaking, rock-climbing, casual biking, and hiking. I am surprised at my 'addiction' to the iPad which I have been able to incorporate into many aspects of my life... working with elderly hospice patients, cooking gourmet foods at home, or reading National Geographic by the fire at night. We strive for a smaller impact on our world with strong tenets of sustainability in our daily lives.
Why the Owner Chose West Hills:
This is apartment is part of our home.
Forest Park is a magnificent resource for residents and visitors alike. It’s future depends on the personal stewardship gained from appreciation of it’s magic; and that can only be developed by spending time within it… Listening, watching.
Guidebooks are around around for identification of native trees, flowers, birds, and animals… and conversations about invasive species can lead to deeper insight and possible action. The bee hives are a source of conversation (and honey).
The hosts are deeply involved in the stewardship of the forest, and reducing the impacts that the house and guests will have on the ecosystem. The home has solar panels for hot water and electrical generation. It is heated by an air-source heat pump. Foods and drinks served are sourced locally, supporting small businesses. Guest service incorporates environmentally responsible products for personal use and laundry, recycling, and conscious choice. 10% of profits are tithed in support of on-going maintenance and protection of Forest Park.
The Unique Benefits at this Apartment:
walking, birding, just being in a beautiful restful place. We are right on the edge of Forest Park... the 5000 acre wooded park in Portland.
