Kitty Hawk house description
Constructed in the Old Nags Head style of the 'unpainted aristocracy,' this house, known to friends and family as 'The Coast Guard Station,' is filled with surprising amenities.
Featuring a pool larger than the ones at most hotels on the Outer Banks, this house has been a favorite gathering place for us for many years. We are proud to be offering it as a vacation rental beginning this summer, after renovations and repairs are complete.
There is off street parking for 6+ cars, and two handicap/wheelchair accessible ramps flanking the house. A detached garage serves as a pool room and bar, complete with flat screen tv and bathroom. This means you can have tons of fun without worrying about waking anyone up!
The huge, sprawling, multilevel deck overlooking the golf course surrounds the house and ascends to the massive swimming pool on the lower level. There is plenty of outdoor seating, with two picnic tables, a poolside dining table, chairs and loungers. The pool is completely private and sheltered from the wind by an outer wall.
We have two outside showers, one enclosed, and one on the pool deck. In addition, there is a charcoal grill.
On the main level of the house we have a large open floor plan with kitchen, dining area, and den with two sofas, chair, and large flat screen tv. Three of the four bedrooms and two baths are also on this floor. Two bedrooms feature queen beds, one bedroom features a pyramid bunk (one twin, one double). All bedrooms have flatscreen tv/cable. There is also a small office area with desk, perfect for surfing the web with our free wi-fi.
Up a small flight of stairs is a second large den with dining area and wet bar. Off to itself, it's the perfect place to put, or escape from the kids. This room has two sofas, a 42 inch flat screen, and dining table.
The master suite is located above this area on its own private floor. This spacious room, with king bed and flat screen tv, has a private balcony with ocean and golf course views. It's the perfect place to sit at the end of the day with a beverage, or to watch the sunrise over the ocean if you are an early bird. This room also has its own bath.
We are currently renovating the master suite/balcony, upper den, and game room. Therefore when we took pictures, we were unable to get shots of these three areas. These will be updated by mid May. Lots of changes are in the works, including new light fixtures/fans, painting, etc. Stay tuned for updates.
We are a SUNDAY to SUNDAY rental in-season.

GREAT STAY in Kitty Hawk at this rental home
GREAT STAY in Kitty Hawk at this rental home
I had a group of 12 people and we all were at this house for 7 days. The place was awesome, very close to great local resturant's (Art's Place was our favorite), gas stations, grocery stores, etc... but still very remote and relaxing. I did not see a single golf ball land around the house and the gold course was PACKED with golfers all weekend. Not sure what that other review was referring too, they must have just had bad luck I guess? The house does look a bit old and outdated from the front, but the inside was moderate and very clean! The bedrooms, beds and couches were all comfy and all in all it was a great stay. We plan on going back next year to this same house! Our favorite things we did during the week: Played golf at Seascapes and Duck Woods Sea Salt and Art's Place resturant Brew Thru relaxed by the pool and beach Went to the brewery in KDH Wright Brothers Memorial

A horrible experience! Watch out for Golf Balls!!!!!
A horrible experience! Watch out for Golf Balls!!!!!
This review complies with the Traveler Review Guidelines. Our family visits the Outer Banks every year. This house was a particular nightmare! Here is a breakdown of our stay. The directions were accurate to get to the house. We arrive and all is well. Immediately the kids wanted to get in the pool. We let them in, and then we noticed golf balls hitting the house and landing in the pool while the children were in there. Then the unthinkable happens. A golf ball hits my daughter in her back. She was in a lot of pain. There is no sign that said beware of golf balls. I hope that people read this review, for safety! The only safe time to get in the pool is the evening, but unfortunately the pool light was out so we could not even enjoy that. Next we could not even use one of the bedrooms due to the ceiling leaking from a rain storm. Dripping on the bed, it made us think, "how long has it been this way? Is there mold?" Upon notifying the owner of these things in an immediate fashion, the owner became irritated and said she wished she had heard about this sooner! I couldn't believe my ears, nor could my wife, as we notified them right away! WATCH OUT FOR GOLF BALLS, they can severly hurt you and you WILL end up picking up many balls off of the property every day and out of the pool every day! Lastly we were told after we got home, that our pets had urinated all over the carpet. I told the owner we did not have pets, thus the reason we did not pay the pet fee. The owner said well how did those pee stains get there? I told her "ma'am my child is allergic to dogs/cats so please don't try to pin this on us and say we brought animals. She also claimed a number of other broken things,,,,,,My wife is a clean freak in general, so we find the broken door handle claim quite false. None the less, the balls will come flying.....Heads UP! I just don't want another person getting hurt! In closing, we would never rent this property or recommend it to anyone, and this is the first property we have said this about. Don't let this review dissuade you, from visiting the Outer Banks. We plan on visiting next year, just not this house!

Owner response: While we are always deeply saddened by a guest whose expectations aren't met by our home, in this case, there are many facts that have been omitted from the story. These guests stayed in July, but just submitted this review at Christmas time. All of our guests are given detailed instructions on how to access the house. Our first paragraph requests that guests inspect the house upon entering and report any issues right away. Our handyman is on call 24 hours a day and could easily have come out to fix the pool light or leak immediately. However, it wasn't until the end of their stay that these things (both remedied) were brought to light. They were contacted by me one hour after their departure, to inform them that there was extensive damage to our home. Our housekeeping staff takes pictures of all issues that require claims to be filed, and those pictures were promptly sent to these guests. Damages were so extensive that we had to send our next arriving family out to a complimentary dinner, to delay their check-in time. Although these visitors denied any responsibility for the damage, none of the items that were broken, stained, etc. had been reported to me prior to their check out. No money was charged to these people because of our property damage protection plan While our house is not in the direct line of fire from golf balls, we do warn our guests in the instruction packet to be aware of the fact that we are on a golf course. While the house was owned by Curtis Strange's mother, not all of the golfers are of his caliber at Seascape, and the occasional ball will enter our yard.
We had an excellent vacation at this property! Since there was a rip tide almost the entire vacation, we weren't allowed in the ocean so the pool came in VERY handy! My favorites were the pool and the master bedroom balcony. You can see the sunrise every morning right from the master bed! We are pregnant and awaiting our first child so we wanted to come to a place to just get away and relax w/o all the crowds, boardwalks, etc...which was just that. Also, if you bring a dog I recommend the drive to Cape Hatteras...we were the only ones on the beach within our view and let our dog run free..he loved it!! It was perfect for us and we would definitely return. Thanks Christi!!

Had a nice time in Outer Banks. House is a fairly good size but is one of the older homes in the golf neighborhood. Has a great swimming pool which the kids loved and a nice flat screen TV in the living room which was nice. The extra den area was great for me to be able to go watch TV in a separate location and get a little peace and quiet from the kids. Unfortunately, there was no remote control for the TV in the den area so I had to keep getting up to change channels or volume, etc. Not as relaxing as I would have liked. The game room and TV in the garage was not used at all - it is a detached garage and has no air conditioning so it was much too hot in there to really sit in there and play pool or watch TV. It rained quite a bit while we were there so opening the garage door was also not an option to try to cool it off in there. The game room was a big reason why we rented that house but was a disappointment when we saw the actual room and lack of ventilation. Also, the master bedroom is above the den area. You have to climb a wooden spiral staircase to access the master bedroom. I found it way too difficult to make that climb up and down the staircase especially with my luggage, so I ended up sleeping on one of the sofas in the den. The staircase is rather steep and narrow. In addition, the master bedroom had a window unit A/C in it that didn't seem to work very well. The room was musty and had a smell that was not pleasant. I have asthma so I decided between the spiral staircase and the mustiness of the room, I avoided it altogether. Rest of the house was fair, old and in need of some sprucing up. Everything was clean and functional. The pool was really the highlight of our stay. We had a great time in it. Always nice just to be in the Outer Banks!

Fun Time in Kitty Hawk
Fun Time in Kitty Hawk
Great Place. When we arrived the house was clean and ready to go. The layout of the house is unique. The owner called us about addressing a maintenance issue. She offered to call off the repairs if was inconvenient. The guys were friendly and in and out in no time. Not your usual experience with vacation homes. Typically we all hung out in the family room and kitchen areas or down by the pool. Nice flat screen televisions throughout the house. Having the second living room and upstairs room was perfect for creating separate spaces for parents and young adults (or kids). Initially we thought being across the highway from the beach would be inconvenient. Turns out Kitty Hawk has plenty of street parking near all the public access points to the beach. Just minutes down the road, we never had an issue finding a parking place within a half a block of the beach. In fact, it was better having the car that close because it allowed us to bring more stuff. If the beach wasn’t in play, the pool was perfect. Good size and well maintained. At the end of our stay, we realized that we actually had it better off than most because the house is at the end of the cul-de-sac. There was little to no traffic and the only people coming and going were the ones that belonged in the neighborhood. Extremely quiet and secure neighborhood. The kitchen had everything we needed. Several places are located close by to pick up whatever we needed (Walmart, Harris Teeter, Winks, Carawan Seafood, Duck Donuts, Rundown Café, Rite Aid, Brew Thru). Duck Donuts saw me several times during the week picking up for the family. I don’t think we travelled further than two miles in either direction. Quiet and relaxing, we would definitely stay here again!

We loved this house! The pool is much bigger than it looks in the photos and was the saving grace of our stay during the heatwave. The house was very clean, well organized, and had everything we needed. Tons of kitchen appliances, pots/pans, dishes, etc. We had some small issues but notified the owner and we were able to take care of them ourselves. Location was great - just a quick drive to the beach and we had a couple morning runners that enjoyed their jogs along these roads. Would definitely stay again!

Why the Owner Chose Kitty Hawk:
This house has been in the family for years. Originally owned by PGA tour winner Curtis Strange's mother, it's proximity to golf is what drew her to the place.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
We love this property because it is so quiet and secluded, yet close to all of the action. The pool is huge, and therefore a gathering place for most of the other families we know that are vacationing in the area. There are so many different spaces to enjoy, especially the detached game room. We don't have to yell at our young adult children about keeping it down late at night, because we don't hear them. We also love how we can feed so many people. There are tons of places to sit and eat, which is great, because I love to cook.
