Disappointing but functional
Disappointing but functional
The pros: location of this apartment was great - 2 blocks to the 23rd street subway station by the Flatiron Bldg and Madison Square Park. The suite was fairly small, but certainly functional. The air conditioner worked, the coin laundry in the building was really handy and there were many restaurants, pubs, coffee shops and convenience stores in every direction. The Bluebell Cafe on Third Ave was fantastic. The cons: the apartment is one floor above street level and noisy. Doors slamming, tenants out talking on the squeaky fire escape until all hours, and the street/traffic noise was significant, seriously affecting the quality of our sleep most nights. The "Free Internet" signal was practically nonexistant, and we had to use the visitor wifi from the college across the street most of the time. The level of cleanliness was disappointing - windows were filthy, bathroom floor had hair balls in the corners, the grout in the shower looked mildewed, and the cupboards had a greasy film. Things needed a thorough wipe down and cleaning. We got 4 well-used bathtowels for an 8-day stay and no floor mat, hand towesl or face cloths. The reality of the suite just did not match the photos. It has been well-used and looks fairly beaten up. A cupboard door was hanging off the hinges, some light fixtures did not work, paint was very scuffed/dirty, tiling in the bathroom is in tough shape and dirty. Communciation with the owners/managers was disappointing. Once the contract was signed and they took our damage deposit, we had to email repeatedly to get any information. They were to charge 1/2 the rent up front and the remainder 2 wks prior to visit. This did not happen until the week we arrived and only when we repeatedly nagged them. We were very concerned that the whole set up was a scam - especially when they did not respond for weeks on end. After we arrived, we sent an email about the wifi signal and problems with lights, but never received a response or acknowledgement. We had to email them to refund our damage depost 2 weeks after checkout, which they finally did. It should not have been necessary for us to continuously contact them, and every time they used the excuse that they had been out of town and just got back...It made the experience so much more frustrating and worrying that it needed to be. In summary: we did not find any bugs, and for the price and convenient location, this place was fine.
