About our area Manta to Jama, let's start with Manta. Here you will find almost everything a person could be looking for, with direct flights from Quito from $141 round trip and car rentals right at the airport. Manta is a large industrial city with a shipping port and fishing fleet. It has shopping malls and butcher shops like Casa de Carne owned by an American who raises his own beef. It's a favorite stop for many expats to stock up on beef & pork. East of Manta about 1/2 hour is Puerto Viejo, the capital of Manabi Province, that also has large shopping malls including a Kywi hardware store much like a Home Depot where you can find many items to meet most of your household needs. Both Manta and Puerto Viejo can be reached by a 1 hour and 15 minute drive from our area. From Manta, driving north, you will pass through some in land low lying mountains, and then back to the coast again will you will find the beach towns of San Jacinto and San Clemente. San Clemente has a small expat community but not much infrastructure for shopping or entertainment. North from San Clemente will take you away from the beach again till you come to Bahia de Caraquez. The large expat community here sits out on a peninsula with many high rise condos and wonderful restaurants. Bahia is the Eco City of Ecuador and has nice paved streets with plenty of trees and flowers. Bahia at this time has 4 new condo projects underway along with the new El Paseo shopping Mall that will have many of the amenities that were only available in Manta. This will be a blessing to all the expats who live in this area of the coast. Once the shopping mall is finished next year we will see another big surge in property prices just as we did when the bridge was finished in 2011, connecting the coast hwy from Bahia to San Vicente. Progress comes at a price but compared to what a person would pay for ocean front property in Costa Rica or Panama, Ecuador still, by far, has the best prices for land and food. Also in Ecuador propane is subsidized by the government so 15 gallons of propane only costs 2 dollars. So everyone uses on demand hot water heaters, gas ovens and gas dryers. This makes a huge savings in the cost of electricity. Also gasoline and diesel are subsidized, so gasoline is only $1.59 per gallon and diesel is only $1.03 per gallon. However, new Cars can be expensive here. Our new 9 passenger Hyundai van cost $33,000, but with an economical diesel engine in time you make up the difference in that extra government import tax. Still with the price of gas so low the taxi fares in Ecuador are affordable and a lot of expats choose to not have a car and go by bus and taxi. Anyway, driving north from Bahia to Canoa you will cross the new longest bridge in Ecuador to the town of San Vicente that in the past was only accessible by a ferry boat across the Chone River estuary or drive around it, along a very long rough road up the river and back down the other side. Now San Vicente is finally seeing improvements to its infrastructure and the airport in time will start flights from Quito making this area even more accessible. Playa Azul is just 13 KM north of San Vicente and 3 Km south of the popular surfing town of Canoa. Playa Azul has over 200 foot of beachfront at your doorsteps. we have a 3 meter wall on three sides and a high quality beach fence that gives everyone privacy and security. All condos have a straight-on view of the ocean with spectacular sunsets. During the warm sunny winter months of November to June we have temps from 85 to 90 then summer arrives in July and the weather cools down and the humidity ends. This is what makes the coast of Ecuador such a wonderful place to live. We have seasons of nice warm winters then cool summers. After living in the Caribbean under the constant heat and humidity 365 days a year, I find the coast of Ecuador far superior over Central America or the Caribbean. Canoa is just a 5 minute drive to the north. Here you will find a popular tourist town with many hotels and restaurants right on the beach. Canoa is very popular with Ecuadorians and foreigners alike. There are quite a few hostels with restaurants owned by North Americans, so there is no lack of American style food from hamburgers with onion rings to pizza. But the best bargains are the Ecuadorian lunches for only $2.50 that includes meat or seafood, fresh juice and soup. North from Canoa to Jama you will be driving inland again till you come to the town of Jama and the fishing village of El Matal. This drive takes about 45 minutes and here you will see a true unspoiled fishing village that doesn't see a lot of tourists. ...morecollapse

We enjoyed our time in the apartment on the beach just south of Canoa. The sound of the surf was so near and strong that we needed to close the screened patio door at night so we could sleep better--and I grew up on the Oregon coast!

We spent a fabulous month from mid-November to mid-December. The condo is just as described, clean safe and friendly. The property is well maintained, the pool is beautiful with lounger, chairs and tables. You are steps to the beautiful beach where you can take a quiet walk without seeing another person. This was our first trip to Ecuador and it was great to have owners that lived on site. Everyone was so helpful and you feel like you are part of a family rather then a visitor. We had afternoons at the pool, dinner BBQ's and morning walks on the beach. Buses run regularly past the condo and you are a short and safe ride to Canoa, San Vincente or Bahia. A taxi can be easily arranged for a longer ride to Manta or a tour of the area. Bring lots of small bills $1's, $5's and $10's. Shopping at the local markets for fresh fruit, veggies and seafood is so much fun and you can't believe the variety available. We need to make a special thank you to Brent and Elsa for all their help and patience answering our questions and sharing their knowledge of Ecuador. We miss all our new friends and can't wait to return.

Just to be clear, I own one of the rental units here (3B), with the hardwood floors. I love the unit, and the location. We have all our light fixtures, etc. and the condo is fully equipped with pretty much everything you can think of, including beach towels. We have been there in January (wet season, but it mostly rains at night, hard), March (still rains quite a bit at night, but not hard), and November (dry season). January and March are about 28 - 35C, but with the breeze off the sea, we only needed the AC when it rained hard, forcing us to close the bedroom door. It's an hour stroll to Canoa on the beach, very pleasant walk, which we have done several times (yes, you can walk to Canoa). And the buses really do pass by about every 15-20 minutes, in both directions. We have a nice bus stop set up outside the compound, so you can sit protected from sun or rain while you wait. The bus drivers are used to stopping there for passengers, it's not a problem. The sea fence is a wire construction, so the view is basically unimpeded. The grounds were planted back in January 2012, and are now looking beautiful. The entire compound is fenced, with locked gates, and covered parking inside the compound, so your vehicle is completely secure. There is a daytime grounds keeper, but he speaks only Spanish. The builders, Brent and Elsa, both live onsite, so if you speak no Spanish they are happy to help you out. They are both very friendly and helpful. The list of activities described really is available, and the location is as described. The cost of the activities is quite reasonable, particularly if you are there in the off-season. The ocean is very fun to play in, with lots of surf. Typical surf heights range from about 5 feet to 15 feet, so you can get some good bodysurfing in, if you want. We picked up a couple of boogie boards and left them there for the use of anyone staying at Playa Dorada. It's pretty amazing when you actually catch a wave right. We did the parapente (parachute flying) when we were there, it's also amazing. If you want to check out the sea and sky from the roof at night, you will need to shut off the beach security light, which is mounted up there. The switch is not there, so ask Brent where it is located. I love this location, and plan to retire there. I am sure that most people will truly enjoy their stay.

The listing was very accurate, the beach flat and perfect for swimming, the seafood from local markets or Canoa fresh and cheap, the veges and fruit ripe and fresh and very cheap, the drinks and beers cheap and excellent, and the bus regular and very cheap. The owner- builders were gracious and helpful and the tile and woodwork were high quality. I already purchased a unit under construction north on the beach and my friend was so impressed he reserved a unit in the project just starting south on the beach. I didn't know what to expect because these units were not here when I was here 2.5 years ago: we were very impressed. You can walk on the beach either direction in clean sand with almost no people until you approach Canoa about 4 km north. Canoa is also 25 cent ride on the bus during the day; if you party late the cab is $3 to the condo. The market in San Viciente is .50 and is 12 km; fresh everything is available and the cab back is $5. Have fun!

Our first stay in Ecuador ever was off to an awesome start in this newly built condo. The sounds of the waves lulled us to sleep at night Enjoyed the apartment and view immensely, but Brent, Elsa, Joe and Roseanne made the fun! They took such good care of us - BBQs, shelling, and day trips. Spent a lot of time in the surfing town of Canoa. Everyone should come to ecuador's coast and stay here. It's heavenly.

We were elated to find that there was a new condo in Canoa with a pool as we were told that the accommodations there could be less than adequate and we would be roughing it. When we arrived, we found a new condo however it was not within walking distance to Canoa and were told that we could wait outside of the condo for a bus that would come around every 20 minutes. We did not see a bus the entire time we were there. The interior of the condo has not been decorated as there are naked bulbs with no light fixtures. There were holes in the walls that looked to have electric wires however no fixtures were on the walls. There were no lamps so the light bulbs from the ceiling were over bright and obnoxious. We were also told in the ad that the condo had wifi and since we must continue running a business while we traveled, this was a must! You guessed it ...there was NO internet connection available in this unit. Also, we could only get one TV channel. There were no extra pillows, the blankets were rough and the bathroom rugs were old, ugly and dirty! I'm sure that if the owner would provide internet service and finish the lighting, and upgrade the furnishings, it would be a lovely place. The developer of the property and family were very nice, too bad the owner of this condo has left Ecuador without finishing it. You do need a car and will need to stop in San Vincente for groceries if you want to cook. The only reason I would recommend it if you are staying in Canoa, is that it is clean and very safe with high fencing and security.

Owner response: There is high speed internet and all light fixtures have been installed. The bus does come by at least every 20 minutes or you can take a taxi to Canoa for $3 or San Vicente for $5. There are over 200 tv channels with many HBO and movie channels in English. There is fresh drinking water provided straight from a faucet. The blankets are high quality bought at one of Ecuador's most prestigious home decorating stores. Everyone who has stayed here has been thrilled just how beautiful and clean the condo is.

What a wonderful week we spent at Playa Dorada! We are already planning a return trip, and in truth, would like to have just stayed forever. The condo was perfect for us. It overlooks the infinity pool straight out to the beach with amazing views up and down the ocean. You can go kayaking, surfing, paragliding and more if you are the adventurous type or you can just relax by the poolside or on the wide stretches of beach where you can watch the many birds as they come and go. We were very warmly welcomed by the owners/builders of the complex and by a couple who are full time residents. They graciously showed us around, where to eat, things to do and how to get around (even if you don’t know any Spanish!) We treasured every moment there and cannot say enough about the condo, the beautiful surroundings and the folks who so kindly made us feel at home. (And bring your checkbook. You’re probably going to want to buy one for yourself!)

Not only was the condo beautiful and clean, but the location was breathtaking. We felt like we were in paradise! The owners greeted us warmly and provided us the all of the things we needed. We arrived tired and hungry and they even gave us a few things to eat to tide us over until we could go out to get our own provisions. The other tenants were great and we made new friends! There is nothing I can say about this glorious place other than I cannot wait to return! The roads nearby are all being re paved and the area is getting to be a great destination spot for travelers. You will find it easy to get around either with or without a car. And once you arrive at the condo, you may never want to leave!

Stayed from Feb.4th to 14th - Wanted to kick back after spending 3 weeks travelling Ecuador from north to south, the Amazon basin, volcanoes, etc. This is the spot to relax - or if you still want to be adventurous, it's easy to cab or bus up or down the coast or back into the Andes. We were there during the so called wet season, but found it mostly only rained at night! Temps were stable, around 35C at peak and maybe 20-25C at night. The breeze off the ocean keeps it cool - we didn't use the AC - like it humid anyway! Left the screened doors open all night. Once here, the cost of living is minimal. Spend days learning to surf at Canoa, just 30 minutes walk up the beach - I tried body boarding right in front of the unit, but i need practice! jump on the bus out front and in 15 minutes you're in San Vicente, or cross the estuary into Bahia town. It certainly doesn't hurt to know some basic Spanish. Shrimp everywhere you turn - cheap! It'll take you a while to re-learn how and where to shop, but everything's an adventure. Beer also cheap, and not too bad if chilled. A local fellow was in the process of developing a micro brewery......You can even get some reasonably priced red wine from Argentina for $4 a bottle. Markets have real fruit and veggies, natural and taste like they used to 20 years ago....and the people seem genuinely friendly. The condos are brand new, constructed under the direction of an American Contractor. I spent 10+ days enjoying the digs, and upon arriving home and thinking some more, decided to purchase in the sister development 10 minutes up the beach! Choose the pool or the ocean, both are great. The development is secured by a surround wall w. locked gate, and there is a great view terrace on the entire top roof, but it's pretty hot up there during the daytime. There are some no-see-em type bugs at dusk, mostly during the rainy season I'm told, that seem impervious to deet. I think I only saw 2 or 3 mosquitoes around the condo over 10 days - I think it's because of the local lay of the land and the ocean breezes. You'd have to be pretty negative to not enjoy this area / condo.

About the owner: After allot of research and travel I found my Paradise here on the central coast of Ecuador back in 2009. Along with my Ecuadorian wife we have been building ocean front condos for retirees from Canada and the U.S. Our attention to detail make our projects stand apart from all others.

                      Why the Owner Chose Canoa:
It's all about the nice secluded beach where you can wake up and see nothing but sand and surf. You can take surfing lessons, kayak to caves, horseback riding, or for a real thrill go tandem paragliding high above the beach.

The Unique Benefits at this Condo:
Sitting on your private terrace enjoying a cup of coffee with the surf at your doorstep. The infinity pool, quiet beach, fully air conditioned rooms with a direct view of the surf. Miles of sandy beach to hunt for sea shells and a totally laid back atmosphere.
