Peaceful setting in a busy city
Peaceful setting in a busy city
This apartment was a real gem to find and it was conveniently placed to enable us to explore the local area and experience Chinese culture. It enabled us to use public transport to explore Beijing. There were numerous restaurants close by and cheap grocery stores. The apartment was ideal for 4 people, and had all the necessary mod cons and the decor was very pleasant and we were never distracted by noise. Communication with Betty was excellent and Mr Gui and his wife were most helpful. Given the chance to return to Beijing we will definately stay here again. Owner response: Thank you so much for choosing the apartment. It's our pleasure to have you. Please visit us again in the future. Best Betty
Great place, central location, good communication with Betty by email before, during and after our stay, good service of mr. Gui during our stay. Recommended for families with (small or big) children (two bedrooms, quiet garden outside). You feel like a "Beijinger". Try Otto's restaurant, just turn right (50m) after passing the entrance gate. For a western breakfast we found a bakery on our way to the Oriental Plaza (500m). Subway (easy and cheap) within 10 minutes walking. Don't hesitate to book this apartment, you won't be disappointed.

A PERFECT stay with all the heart and character of old Beijing
A PERFECT stay with all the heart and character of old Beijing
We stayed at this apartment for 7 nights in June 2013. The location is very historically significant as it is in a Western-style compound that used to be residential buildings for the old Peking Union Hospital. This is multi-million dollar real estate in China today in terms of location. There are still the old Western-style houses built around a central courtyard and this apartment is in a building behind the main courtyard complex, but still on the same grounds. Just steps from this central courtyard you enter into Beijing's famous alleys, which are teeming with activity. You are also just a few blocks from the huge Oriental Plaza shopping center, the Wangfujing shopping district, the old Beijing Hotel, and just a couple more blocks away is Tiananmen Square and the entrance to the Forbidden City. The location of this apartment is ideal for exploring Beijing. You can easily take the subway from the Dongdan station that will take you almost anywhere in the city. The apartment itself was spotlessly clean. Air conditioning worked great. The rooms are simple but elegant with high ceilings which give a sense of space. The bathroom is roomy with a larger-than-normal shower. There is TV with local channels, wifi, a nice, clean, usable kitchen, and a washer and dryer. After staying in Beijing hotels for many years, I only wish I had found out about this place sooner because it really is in the "heart" of the city. I would not hesitate to book this apartment again the next time I go to China. Five stars.

Excellent Place to stay in Beijing
Excellent Place to stay in Beijing
Betty's apartment was great. I was working and living in BJ for around 2 months, my company's offices were in Oriental Plaza, so this apartment was very convenient to the office, as well as to the subway station. It was only about an 8 minute walk door to door to work and the subway. I did not go to any of the major tourist attractions nearby (I have been before), but they all look to be an easy walk or short subway away. The apartment was beautifully remodeled, high attention to detail, and high quality materials. Everything worked very well in the apartment, especially the AC and wireless internet. It is very clean as well. The bed is also very comfortable. The description that Betty had used was accurate and the photos accurately reflect the rentals appearance and amenitites. In fact, Betty has added some accessories (including a lot of DVD's) to the apartment to make it feel more homey. The property was clean and very well maintained, as is the beautiful courtyard that the apartment is located in. Betty, someone who used to live in the US for a long time, was very easy to communicate with, and understands the needs and expectations, as well as standards of a foreigner who is not used to living in China. She was also able to address any issues that I had. Her property manager was also very nice and helpful, though only speaks Chinese, but he was able to use much simpler Chinese for me to understand. There is no gym in the area, so if you are planning on staying long term, the Regent Hotel, an 8 minute walk away, offers gym memberships. I would highly recommend this property to anyone planning on staying or working in the area. I only tried a few of the restaurants on the street that the apartment is on, they were good, and I didn't get sick. I highly recommend walking around the area and up and down the streets and around the hospital to get a feel of the history of the area.

About the owner: I was born and raised in Beijing, as matter of fact, in the very apartment I am renting out. Because this apartment is situated in a western style villa, I had a lot more space and friends when I grew up compared to many kids grew up in typical Chinese courtyard. I still have fond memories of the games we used to play in the green and spacious courtyards. We used to chase each other on top of the brick walls and climb the trees. Now we have all grown up and left the villa. We only come back to visit once a while. The villa has far less kids nowadays. Eventually I left home too, after college and went to the United States for graduate school. Now I have returned to live in Beijing with my cat and two sons who keep me very happy.
Why the Owner Chose Beijing:
I was born and raised in this apartment untilI went to United State for graduate school. For many years this was the only place I called home. I have many memories of this apartment. The villa this apartment is situated is a historical villa built by the Rockefeller family as residential villa for the doctors of the Peking Union Hospital at the turn of 20th century. Although the apartment is the newest building in the villa, it is over 60 years old. It is the only 'modern' style building in the villa, which consists of some 30 houses and townhouses with gardens throughout. The villa has been declared by the Beijing Municipal Government as a historical site. The alley, or hutong, where the villa is located is also full of history. During the Ming Dynasty the hutong was called 'Shi Da Ren Hutong' after 'Master Shi', who was a powerful general at the time. He built a mansion on this very spot in 1456, which is one of the eight famous mansions in Beijing. Its current name, 'Waijiaobu', means Department of Foreign Affairs. It comes from the Qing Dynasty when the guest house of the Department of of Foreign Affairs, designed by an American Jerry Johnson, was built. It later became the site of the Department of Foreign Affairs complex during Republic of China era. It was one of the most luxurious Western-style buildings in the capital at the time. When I remodeled the apartment, I had in mind providing modern comfort as well as preserving the original architecture. I selected only top quality materials for renovation. The bathroom cabinets, some furniture, and paint for the walls are imported from United States. I kept the high ceiling, deep window cells, and door paths which were special features from the original design. In addition, some of the furnishings are from when my parents lived here. Some of them are over 70 years old.
The Unique Benefits at this Apartment:
The best feature of the apartment is its location. While it is located in the heart of Beijing it is in a quiet and secluded neighborhood. Tucked away in the back of a historical villa it is sheltered from the busy street. Although it the villa is located in the centre of one of the busiest cities in the world, there is no sense of the fast paced urgency that exists right outside its walls. The villa also features a beautiful common garden for residents to enjoy. There are many old trees that provide shade and tranquility. This is especially welcome when the greenery help soothe the heat and humidity of the Beijing summer. Another nice feature of the apartment is it's near many attractions. The famous Wangfujing shopping street and the Oriental Plaza are only a short walk away. The Tienanman Square, Forbidden City, Line 1 and Line 5 subway stations, as well as a multitude of museums, temples, and other attractions, are also nearby.
