Sooke cottage description
This is an intimate cottage on the sea. From here, you can fish for salmon and halibut, kayak among seals, mountain bike as far as you like, surf the Pacific, or hunker down and write that novel.
We have a 1.2 acre south facing property on Sooke Basin, a protected bay off the Pacific. It's salt water, but you'd swear it was a lake. Calm as a mill pond most mornings, you'll wake to the sounds of ducks, geese, swans, and the odd snorting seal. There's often a morning mist, and sometimes you will feel compelled to take your coffee and go sit down by the water and just stare as the sun rises and the world comes to life.
The cottage is set on an oceanfront corner of our property, with the main house where we live set farther back, and on the other side of a 'wave' fence (You'll understand when you see it.) We want to make it perfectly clear that this is a shared property. Don't worry - it's still quite private, but you'll have a view of our front lawn out your side window. We'll be here most of the summer, although we're away for a couple of weeks here and there.
The cottage is best for a couple or at most a family of four. The bedroom has a queen bed, and there is a double sofa bed in the living room. The main room consists of a kitchen, dining area and living area. It's compact, but well done. (If you want a sprawling mansion, look elsewhere.) There is a new private hot tub on the cottage deck on the ocean side. We have a large (220 feet) dock, where we keep our main boat and an inflatable Zodiac-type boat. We just set the shrimp traps off the dock. Prawns are a little more work, but we can talk about that if you're keen. The kayaks and standup paddle board are kept under the deck or down by the water - help yourself to them. Who knows? If we're around, we may take you salmon fishing! (Keep some burgers on standby, though. Sigh.) Also lots of charters available nearby, because, frankly, we're not that good at fishing.
Our main property has organic vegetable gardens, an orchard, a greenhouse, and a variety of chickens and ducks. The Galloping Goose Trail goes by the end of our street, and is perfect for walking the dog, a morning run, or a good bike ride. The town of Sooke has some absolutely spectacular restaurants, and the nearby beaches are breathtaking.
Weather is usually nice in the summer, and this place gets stupidly beautiful, but this is the west coast of BC. It will probably be nice for your stay in July or August, but there is always the (small) chance that it could rain every day. Really unlikely, but be warned. June is probably riskier than September, weather-wise. For October thru May, bring a raincoat. Or maybe a snorkel. But it's still beautiful here in the late fall and winter. The ocean never freezes, the kayaks are there, the Galloping Goose beckons, and it can be wonderful. It can also be dark and rainy - a good time to sit in the hot tub, sip red wine, and read (or write) that great novel.

Not the best, but doable. No stairs, but the deck has a six inch step up from the gravel path. A small ramp could easily be installed. Going down to the dock would be challenging, but not impossible. Coming up the hill would be work. There are better places for those with handicaps, but if you're in good shape and determined, this could work. We'll send pictures if you're determined....moreless
Even have a play centre in the main yard. Slide, swings, elevated walkway, playhouse, suicidal climbing wall. They'll eat berries in the garden, gather eggs, and chase chickens. This is kid heaven....moreless

There will be lots of room in the driveway, unless you drive a train. Bringing a boat? Our dock has about six feet of depth at low tide. You'll be on the windward side, so bring some extra bumpers. It can be lumpy, but never dangerous in the Basin....moreless

- You'll be literally 8 feet from a bank that looks down into the water. Sooke is great - small town, good restaurants, and good grocery stores and pharmacy. There is a local medical clinic, but it can be hard to get into, so you'd have to go 20 minutes for a walk in clinic, and 25 minutes for a hospital. The weather is usually nice in the summer. It could go 45 days without rain (60 last year), it could rain every day you're here. But summer weather is usually pretty reliable and pleasant. Don't expect heat, however. A typical nice day here in July would be 25 C (75 F). Expect to wear a sweater or hoodie in the evening. Nice thing - very few mosquitoes. The cool ocean breezes have good and bad aspects - few bugs, but never hot. There is a lot to do - fishing, crabbing, shrimping, beach combing, surfing, paddle boarding, hiking, kayaking, diving, whale watching, biking, boating, tubing. Check out some of the great restaurants, explore Victoria, go up Island. We're still discovering things - it's like we're on vacation! Exquisite in every sense!
Exquisite in every sense!
This review is a little late in coming, and I feel badly for that! My husband and I visited this lovely property over a weekend this past August and were absolutely wowed. We have taken many such weekend getaways over the years, and in each place, I typically find myself making mental lists of the things I like, and things that I would change to improve the rental. Without exaggeration, there is not a thing I could or would change about this property. If you are seeking a blissful escape away from it all, with the sense of being immersed in a nature, but with all of the modern luxuries and ammenties at your fingertips, you'll find it here! The Capanas have literally thought of everything, and I mean everything, not to mention the fact that they themselves are delightful. The interior of the cottage is beautifully decorated, the kitchen stocked to perfection, the bathroom (and tub in particular), magnificent, the hot tub, lovely, and the views are just simply out of this world. The welcome basket waiting for us on arrival was so very appreciated. My husband had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to join Bruce on a salmon fishing outing, and while he was having 'the best day ever', I was feeling much the same, as I sat on the dock with book in hand, coffee beside me, soaking up sun, watching the seals and birds lounging on a log next to me, listening to the odd boat pass by in the distance and enjoying some much needed and total relaxation. Well done to the Campanas. You've achieved perfection. Thank you for your thoughtfulness and for the great stay!!!

Spectacular! The cottage is lovely, decorated comfortably in West Coast style and is well appointed: dishwasher, spices, washer/dryer, dry goods etc. Views from the large windows reveal the magical ocean and its treasures - seals, sea otters etc. The host family is incredibly generous and helpful. We enjoyed fresh eggs and organic produce from their hen house and garden. They also gave us access to their kayaks and fishing traps. We had a blast crabbing. Close by attractions like Sooke Potholes, Mystical Beach, and Whiffen Spit were easy to get to and absolutely marvellous. Our two week stay was exceptional and we can't wait to go back!

The Best Vacation
The Best Vacation
My husband and I stayed for a week, had the best time there, I even suggested calling and cancelling the next guests so we could stay longer. Yes seriously. So, thank you Campanas, you go above and beyond to make your guests feel welcome.

We were very excited to visit this property and it absolutely lived up to our expectations and far beyond. The accomodation was clean, comfortable and beautifully furnished and we were welcomed by a hamper, thoughtfully prepared. We spent little time inside however, because the immediate outdoors was just amazing. The views are stunning and our young children had an unforgetable time exploring on the deck, discovering sea life and having fun in the water. We really appreciated being able to make use of the owner's kayaks and it was a great opportunity for our young children to gain confidence in the very calm waters here. The owner was incredibly kind and generous with his time, taking our children on their first ever fishing trip and sharing his knowledge (and catch ) with them. This is really such a special place. We had little inclination to go far, but we enjoyed a lovely local hike, and discovered some fantastic beaches and forests. We spent just a couple of nights here during our 4 week vacation visiting Vancouver and Vancouver Island and it was the highlight of the trip....and it was a fantastic trip!

My husband and I stayed at this cozy cottage for a week and we had a fabulous time. The hosts are a kind and gracious family. The cottage was clean and well cared for. We cooked several meals in the kitchen and loved having tea on the porch. The real beauty lies in the surrounding area. During our week we saw bald eagles, seals, bears, deer and even a pod of orcas off Point Renfrew. The biking trail, hiking and kayaking are not to be missed! Check out the Little Vienna Bakery - cinnamon schnecke:-) Relax, get outdoors, and then relax some more...

About the owner: We're Darlene and Bruce, and Ben and Josh. Both of us are in health care, while our twin 11 year olds seem to be in junior terrorism. We also have an entourage of animals, including Obi the ball-obsessed dog, who loves you; Seymour the cat, who doesn't care about you or us; Juanita the macaw, who wants to bite you; Bunbun the bunny; a variety of egg-laying chickens; and Fred and Ginger, along with the other ducks, who are quite sweet. There's also a steer named Melvin at our friend's place, who will be delicious. As far as we know we aren't weird or unpleasant. We don't smoke, we don't drink except the odd glass of wine, and we're pretty boring, actually. But we're not bored. Ever. Also, we'd like to get a kangaroo. And a miniature cow. Stay tuned.
Why the Owner Chose Sooke:
We didn't buy a vacation property - this is where we live. The main house is a 1930s renovated farmhouse that came with this great little cottage by the sea. And we mean by the sea. We wouldn't be allowed to build it where it is by current regulations. The deck is almost at the edge of the bank. Any closer and it would be a boat, not a cottage. You'd need gills. We also have a really nice loft above the garage that we haven't even told you about. We don't rent it routinely unless there is an emergency overflow situation, like your parents/children/friends are visiting you for a night or two. Sooke is a quiet little town that has yet to be discovered. It has some of the most outrageously beautiful scenery you'll ever see. It is bursting with wildlife, recreation, fishing, boating, hiking, surfing - it's crazy that people haven't figured it out yet. The town is unspoiled, the area is clean, and far enough from the city that you feel away, but close enough that everything you want is within half an hour. And for some reason, Sooke has these incredible restaurants : we mean high-end, fancy places with really good food. Also some not as fancy, but still really good. We've been here two years, and we're still discovering things!
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Where do we start? You're on the ocean, but without the cold wind and rough water. It's like a lake, but full of life. Kayak, paddle board, go for a boat ride. Hike, bike, run the Goose. Hit the beaches up the coast. Eat some of the finest meals you will ever eat at places in the middle of nowhere. Fish for salmon, or try to catch a halibut that weighs more than you do. Unless you're really big. Bigger than a halibut? Go watch some whales - they'll make you feel small. If you want nature in your face, this is the right place. If you want shopping and theatre, well, that's actually not that far away in Victoria, so you should probably stay there, and leave this place for someone who wants to soak in the tub, and contemplate the fresh salmon they just cooked on the BBQ before going to bed and zzz...

Side view, with a bit of the fence.
Another view of the main room. Shows the kitchen. Also wide angle lens.
Bedroom again, with neat window into the bathroom. No idea why that's good.
The dock on a misty morning: you could be standing here.
Sammy the seal snarfing some salmon.
Look closely: a mother and 3 cubs in one of our front trees.
The garden path: orchard at the back, greenhouse on the left.
Mystic Beach. Waterfall and rope swing. Magical.
Our dock, between fall storms. Not Photoshopped.
View above the dock. Lots to do.
The main room. Wide angle lens makes it look bigger than it is.
Bedroom: the window looks out on the ocean, with a bit of front yard.
The bathroom w/tub & shower. No toilet though. Ha! - just kidding - lower right.
The covered side deck. Good place to BBQ a fresh salmon.
The float next door. Bit of a rough crowd. Gets loud. And smelly.
The chickens: fresh eggs every morning.
The deck and fire pit down by the water. Many a marshmallow...
Dawn from the front yard. Take a good look. You will never get up this early.
Day's catch. Coho and pink salmon.
