A romantic and whimsical fortified home on the western end of Sullivan’ s Island. Together with Forts Sumter and Moultrie, Mugdock Castle guards the entrance to Charleston Harbor - the most historic North American port of the Atlantic Coast.
Mugdock Castle consists of two buildings joined by a central stair tower and bailey. The Winter Hall and North Tower are located in the Gothic portion of the fortress. The Winter Hall is constructed of two foot thick Georgia granite walls. It houses the kitchen, dining hall, library, buttery, throne room, and minstrel gallery. The North Tower accommodates a small bed chamber as well as the casemate above. The northern ramparts of the tower are reached via ship's ladder from the casemate.
The Summer Hall is located in the more recently constructed Norman Keep. The Keep has battered masonry walls, two and a half feet thick at the base. It houses the undercroft, the castle laundry, six bed chambers with associated wardrobes, and 5½ garderobes. There are two south facing porches, which provide access to additional dining facilities located atop the southern ramparts.
Mugdock's grounds feature the Morning Courtyard to the east and Summer Lawn and Olive Groves to the south.
Mugdock Castle and its surrounding grounds are available for rent. Six bed chambers and five and one halfgarderobes (baths) accommodate 12 in two queens, two fulls, and four singles (two pair of bunk beds). It’s fully equipped kitchen features an Aga stove, Bosch, Sub-Zero, and Fisher & Paykel appliances. A/V and technology equipment includes stereo, wireless internet, and a 7’ diagonal projection television. Mugdock comes equipped with bicycles and kayaks to explore Sullivan’s Island’s back roads and waterways. Arrangements can be made for house keeping and concierge/chef services.
The eastern end of Sullivan’s Island offers one of the best places for wind surfing and kite boarding on the east coast. Surfing is best at nearby Isle of Palms and Folly Beach. Arrangements are easily made for in-shore and off-shore fishing charters. Power boats and paddle boards are also available at nearby outfitters. The closest golf course is seven miles from Mugdock Castle. Hunting charters for quail, dove, turkey, and deer, can also be arranged. The area offers an endless number of potential day trips. Cultural, environmental, and historical resources abound.

About the owner: A little about your hosts: Jimmy is an entrepreneur who earns a living writing and consulting; Alisha is a registered nurse. We enjoy travelling, good conversations, bike rides on the beach, and being involved with our community. Your hosts live onsite in an isolated area of the castle. We both work and are very active, and don't spend much time at the castle besides sleeping. When visitors are on the grounds we go out of our way to make ourselves scant and only present when needed or desired by our guests. We are happy to help with local recommendations, arrange tours and festivities, coordinate catering, etc. We also understand that some guests would rather a more private/exclusive experience. If the need arises we have arrangements at a downtown location. There is an extra cost of $1,000 per week for this option. A warm welcome awaits you at Mugdock; we will be delighted to show you around this majestic property and help familiarize you with the local area. Your experience at the castle can be personalized based on your interests; fishing charters, historic tours, catered dinners, and gourmet picnic packs can be arranged.
Why the Owner Chose Sullivan's Island:
Stepping into Castle Mugdock one instantly feels the passion of the skilled craftsmen and designers who helped preserve the sanctity of Mugdock's history, while still accounting for the comfort needs of the modern day resident. No detail has been overlooked in the venture of building this fortress.
The Unique Benefits at this Castle:
Intimate stargazing from atop the North Tower, stunning views.
Enjoy movie night with a seven foot projection TV with DVD.
A geothermal powered range means that the stove is always on and ready to use.
Explore the Island's backroads and waterways with one of kayaks or bikes.
