Perfect Martha's Vineyard Beach House with 180 Degree Ocean View
- Minimum stay:N/A
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:No
- Wheel chair accessible:No
Spacious, light-filled contemporary home on 3 acres in Chilmark, the most beautiful and desirable spot on Martha's Vineyard, with private beach. Walking distance to Lucy Vincent Beach, the Chilmark Store (sit on the porch and enjoy a slice of their famous pizza) and Alley's General Store.
The house has vaulted ceilings, clerestory windows that flood the interior with light, a roomy, open floor plan and 4 gorgeous, large bedrooms plus a 'Crows Nest' office/bedroom/studio tucked away at the top of the stairs. Freshly painted and completely refurbished with tasteful moderne furniture and beachy, high thread count linens -- all you need to bring is your toothbrush.
Ground-floor as well as second story views of Chilmark Upper Pond, the beach and the Atlantic ocean. The house comes with deeded rights to a shared dock on Chilmark Upper Pond with 2 parking spaces at the dock; PLUS a deeded private ocean beach. A five minute kayak or canoe trip across the pond lands you on your own private beach, shared with only seven families.
It is perfect for small children, the third generation of our family is now proving that. They can paddle about on the private beach, or in Chilmark Pond where we all learned to swim. Beach passes for the restricted town Ocean beaches are available for purchase with your lease. The Menemsha public beach (and its great fish markets) are nearby. Chilmark has a wonderful community center summer program that runs every weekday for children up to 12, where your kids can meet others in the neighborhood. The Community Center also has tennis courts, film nights, yoga and exercise classes, and square dances
The outdoor shower is the ideal way to clean sand from your toes after a day at the beach. An enormous deck facing the ocean is the perfect place to enjoy cocktails as the sun sets or to grill fish on the barbeque. The house is just off South Road, an easy drive to all the island's charms: the Flying Horses carousel and Illumination Night at the campground in Oak Bluffs; the wild clay cliffs of Aquinnah, and the picturesque fishing village of Menemsha where you can enjoy a Vineyard tradition with fresh lobsters and steamers from Larsen's Fish Market as you watch the sunset from Menemsha Beach. This house is the perfect place to discover Martha's Vineyard or re-visit and re-discover its magic.

About the owner: I am a film and television director with a delightful 16 year old daughter. We travel extensively for work and pleasure and love to exchange our home so we can live as locals and treat others to the delights we have discovered in our gorgeous summer home. Some of our best trips have been a theatre trip to London, a six room apartment overlooking the Seine in Paris and trips to New York City. We invite you to share our home and our world; enjoy the discovered and undiscovered sights of Martha's Vineyard -- from the best, private beaches, to the freshest fish markets (home-prepared lobsters and steamers as you watch the sun set over Menemsha Sound), to the fine dining in Oak Bluffs and Edgartown .
Why the Owner Chose Chilmark:
I have spent every summer in Martha's Vineyard since I was two years old. There is, literally, no place more beautiful or filled with special memories. The Island has retained its unique magic, virtually unchanged in the years I've been vacationing there. It's no accident that President Obama, the Clintons, Mike Wallace, William Styron, Walter Cronkite, Spike Lee, the Kennedys, James Taylor and Carly Simon have chosen Martha's Vineyard as a vacation spot -- it has the world's most beautiful beaches, a great cultural life (movies, readings, music, art, and theatre) and wonderful opportunities for children of all ages. My daughter loved Pony Camp at Pond View Farm, and Art's Camp at the Chilmark Charter School. The Agricultural Fair is a week-long delight and Vineyard traditions, like the July Fourth Parade, Illumination Night, and sunset on Menemsha Beach remain alive, reminding vacationers that a simpler past is still accessible to be enjoyed.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
The house is warm and comfortable and situated in the ideal Vineyard spot -- with great privacy, a private beach, yet accessible to the towns of 'Down Island.' The open plan living area leads right onto a capacious deck, so there is an effortless flow from interior to exterior. The view is breath-taking and can be seen from every room but one. Here are some of the things my family and I enjoy doing when we summer on the island: biking and hiking on the Island's trails; kayaking in the ocean or on one of the many salt water ponds that dot the island; riding horses on the beach or at one of pristine farms on the Island; playing golf at the great golf courses (where Presidents Obama and Clinton have played.) The fresh produce, cheeses, and pies at the West Tisbury Farmer's Market and Morning Glory Farms are the best you'll ever have. We love to pick just ripened blueberries and bake our own pie. The Vineyard has several truly extraordinary restaurants -- State Road, Sweet Life, The Bite, home of the best fried clams in the world, and the iconic Black Dog Tavern. On a rainy day, the Flying Horses carousel, the oldest working carousel in America, is a must -- get the brass ring and win a free ride. But, best of all, spend the evening chilling on the spacious deck after a day at the beach, and barbequeing fresh tuna on the grill. After dinner, the deck is the perfect place to watch the stars, and listen to the sound of the waves as you slide into sleep.
