Our month long stay at this stunning property was one that we wanted to extend indefinitely. One would think that this is an upscale retreat for an executive and not a rental home. It is beautifully decorated with tender loving care to please even the most finicky of guests. We loved sitting by the fireplace on chilly evenings, cradling a mug of hot chocolate which we had prepared in the very spacious, well equipped gourmet kitchen. The open floor plan flows beautifully, one room to the next, with the dining room overlooking the gorgeous swimming pool and gardens which are abundant with cutting herbs and some vegetables. The expansive garden area extends to the river as do the many walnut trees which groaned with nuts which we picked and enjoyed. Bliss! The bedrooms and bathrooms are plush and airy, designed with a clever eye for comfort and have ample light both by day and night. No stone has been left unturned to provide comfort and beauty. Your every need has been anticipated by the owners of this home that is a home and not simply a rental. They provide a wealth of information for you about the area, making it so easy to get around and enjoy the beauty and activity of the Dordogne area of France.Did you find this review helpful? This is a "barn" the way the Waldorf is a motel. This FORMER barn has been brilliantly renovated into a comfortable, tasteful and utterly liveable home which is perfectly located for visiting many of the wonders of a wonderous corner of the world. The owners make every effort to make your stay smooth, stress-free and rich in information and suggestions - and succeed admirably. The nearby markets and perfectly appointed kitchen make eating-in a pleasure, but the terrific restaurants make eating out equally irresistible. It's hard to imagine more perfect conditions in which to sightsee, bike, explore, relax, eat and drink than those provided here.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

You know when you find somewhere special that you don't want others to know about in case they ruin it, well we're changing the habit of a lifetime! If you're looking for a place where you can switch off from life, kick back and get absorbed in the slower pace of life, then this is the place for you. An immaculate home, well loved and cared for. The quality of the furnishings/linens etc. top some 4* hotels we've visited. We've shown pictures to friends since coming home and they all say the same thing "what a pretty house". But it's more than that. After splitting our journey over two days to get a 'feel' for France, we arrived pretty tired but pleased to see that the pictures do the house justice. A quick 15minute unpack and we'd cracked open the lovely bottle of wine and were sitting outside watching the sun go down. That set the scene for the next 2 weeks. It'll be difficult tearing yourself away to visit famous Sarlat (go early!). A very big thank you to our hosts. Any hiccups were dealt with quickly and without fuss. We weren't sure about going to France for a holiday but we're so glad we did and so glad we found Le Chabrol. Worth every penny for the luxury and the ambience. Well done to the owners, we are converts to holidays in France thanks to your well executed rental and top class accommodation.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

The owners of this holiday 'home' certainly go the extra mile to ensure that their guests have a wonderful holiday. The interior is very well planned, the furnishings very comfortable and the tasteful colour palette would appeal to most tastes. Another aspect which was very much appreciated by us was the fact that the house was spotlessly clean - there's nothing worse than having to utilize furnishings and household items ingrained with the grime of strangers. We wanted for nothing during our stay, everything we needed could be found within the cupboards and absolutely ANYTHING we needed to know about the house, markets, sights, local facilities and customs was to be found in THE most comprehensive info folder that we've ever come across in all our years of renting gites in France. After extending our stay by a week reluctantly we had to leave "Le Chabrol", it's beautiful riverside garden and of course this very beautiful part of the Dordogne.Did you find this review helpful? After reading the property description and seeing the photographs on-line, plus having had email correspondence with Gary, the owner, we did have a sense that nothing could go wrong, but you never know do you? You rememer the times you have had high expectations only to find that the rubber gloves and bleach have to come out as soon as your arrive at the holiday rental or the location is far from what the "blurb" has said ..... WELL YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED with a thing at Le Chabrol. We instantly fell in love with the place ... I think the property and meeting the needs of the guests can be summed up in one phrase "Attention to detail". The property was immaculate and literally had everything you would need. Moreover, it was a "home from home" with finishing touches everywhere, freshly cut flowers, perfectly decorated and interesting rooms and every mod con. The location was true to the description, with beautiful gardens leading to the Dordoyne, a 15 minute picturesque walk to Tremolat and with exciting and breathtaking places to visit nearby. Everyone we met was throroughly helpful and friendly and do try and speak a little French, it goes down a treat. The pool and outside dining actually leaves you with little reason to explore but you should make the effort because Le Chabol is the perfect place for R&R afterwards. The House Manual is so helpful and is full of tips for shopping and eating out, as well as instructions on how to use all the gadgets - but is certainly not full of "can't do's". On the contrary, they trust you to respect their home and in return want you to relax into it for the duration of your stay. The management team they employ are a credit to them and absolutely play a key part in making your stay stress free. A big thank you to Gary and Bill and their team. We have not stopped talking about our stay - Vive Le France, Vive Le Chabrol!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

My 19 and 15 year old boys, husband and I had a fantastically peaceful week at Le Chabrol. The property was, without a doubt, the cleanest we have ever stayed in and the attention to detail and home comforts was excellent. The river at the bottom of the garden was fantastic and my husband swam in it every day! Nothing was too much trouble for Cheri and her husband Brian who manage the property, they were fabulous! The boulangerie in Tremolat was a 2 minute drive away for your morning croissant or pain au chocolat and the pizzeria, also in Tremolat, was good value with a pleasant atmosphere and a warm welcome. Would we stay again if we were in the area? Absolutely DEFINITELY!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

It was our seventh stay in this beautiful region of France and we always had the chance to rent good or even great holiday homes - but "Le Chabrol" beats them all by far! What a warm welcome with fresh flowers in every room, a bottle of Bergerac rouge and extremely helpful descriptions of every device and gadget! Each member of our party of four (aged 43 - 65) felt immediately at home and each had different favourites: The kitchen, the picnic table on the river bank, the pool or the beautiful interior. Having spent quite a few holidays in the area, we picked just a few "sightseeing cherries" and spent more time exploring the local markets, enjoying the fantastic restaurants (most of our favorite restaurants are on Gary's list, as well) and relaxing, relaxing, relaxing. Thanks to Gary and Bill for sharing your fantastic home with us - the four Germans are really looking forward to our next stay in July 2012!!!!Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

It was the dream of a lifetime. We have travelled to many idyllic places in the world and this vacation was everything we hoped for. The home was simply beautiful and in one of the most beautiful settings that we have ever seen. To Gary, Bill and Cheri, thank you! "Le Chabrol" was just as advertised. We're still looking at the pictures and wishing that we were still there. Of course, we did the normal activities touring the Dordogne region, visiting other towns, the markets, vineyards, cruising on the Dordogne and enjoying ballooning. The cuisine was exquisite. Our family, friends, and neighbors were taken by the area and homes beauty as much as we were. As far as visiting the area again, there is no doubt that we will. A chance to live in paradise doesn't come every day. For my 60th birthday present my husband agreed to a week in France and not being a fan of France this was a huge concession! We flew in from Saudi Arabia, meeting our two daughters, one son-in-law and a three-year-old granddaughter, Sophie, who had flown in from the States. Long journeys for all of us but what a wonderful surprise "Le Chabrol” was! It was everything the pictures had promised and more. Gary understood the complicities of such travel and provided impeccable directions from Bordeaux and advice on the best markets to stop in and get provisions for our first few days. We went to village markets the rest of the time and it was difficult not to buy everything in sight. May is a spectacular time to visit with asparagus in season, lots of duck and gorgeous strawberries. The barn can hardly be called that. “Le Chabrol” is beautifully decorated and each bedroom has an incredible view across the back pasture to the river. Early morning fog and birds singing were our wake up call. We would start our day with Sophie going out to the garden to pick fresh strawberries for our breakfast on the terrace, then yoga by the pool and a swim before we would decide on where to go for the afternoon. Gary’s guest book was right on point with which daily village markets to visit, restaurants and sights to see. Being in such a lovely region of France, we never lacked for things to do, just the time to do it all in! Gary and Bill thought of every detail – fresh flowers in every room upon arrival, luxurious sheets on the beds, a kitchen with everything you need to prepare wonderful meals, not to mention – the quietist washing machine and drier I have ever heard and in one of the most tranquil settings. It was simply perfect and my husband is now planning our next visit. Thank you Gary and Bill for such a great birthday present!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Le Chabrol was our first stop on our month long vacation and it was a wonderful week. We had never been to the Dordogne and found it one of our favorites in France and will be back. The house was lovely and had all the amenities necessary to make us feel like home and very clean. The Home Away office was nearby and very helpful. My husband and I, together with our good friends (another couple), stayed at Le Chabrol for Christmas 2009....and it was, in a word, magnificent. Immediately on walking in the door we were blown away by the elegance (and warmth!) of the property: Gary and Bill have obviously poured so much time and effort into making their rental property a glorious retreat and "home away from home" for those lucky enough to stumble upon it. The barn (I hesitate to use the word as in no way does it feel like a barn when you are inside!) is wonderfully spacious and despite spending most of our time indoors over the week curled up with books and wine in front of the crackling fire, we never felt crowded or in each other's way. And the kitchen? Oh my! Seriously, if you like to cook, or even if you don't, the kitchen is a dream. Gary and Bill have outfitted the kitchen with every appliance/cooking instrument you can possibly think of- we wish we had a kitchen like this back in London- and despite intentions of dining out for a few meals during our stay, we were all so enthused by the produce available at the markets, and the loveliness of the kitchen, that we ate in for the whole week. Because we were arriving on Christmas Eve (and were concerned about being able to pick up our Christmas Day provisions) Gary kindly reserved a superb goose for us at a local shop which we were able to pick up on our way to the property, along with a chicken and some foie gras. Brilliant. The bedrooms are beautiful (so nice to wake up to a view and birds chirping!) and the bathrooms have excellent water pressure and those fab rainforest shower heads. Gary has prepared a most comprehensive compendium setting how "how to's" for the house (e.g. how to get the fire going, essential for us city folk; about the pool; the Bose sound system etc) and their recommendations for local restaurants, sightseeing, supermarkets and fresh food markets, which we found invaluable. There is also a lovely library of books and I personally puttered my way through each of their cookbooks during our stay. Most happy to see Stephanie Alexander's "Cooking and Travelling in South-West France" in the selection :) The only thing wrong with the Gary and Bill's property?.... It isn't ours! Many thanks Gary and Bill from 4 Australians living in London- we will be back again soon.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

My husband and I stayed for a week in October. We didn't use the pool (which is beautiful) but found the house warm and welcoming: fireplace, heated floors...extremely comfortable beds, modern bathrooms with lots of hot water and best of all a wonderful kitchen. There were still herbs and some strawberries to be found in the garden of the nicely landscaped back yard. The furniture is comfortable and well thought out and the Sky cable and music made each night relaxing. Guidebooks, paperbacks, recommendations for restaurants and markets--we couldn't think of a thing lacking. Great taste throughout and the feeling that it really is someone's loved home. We hope to return every year. We have recommended property to all our friends.Recommended for: Age 55+, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Our family had a fabulous week at this beautiful property. The house would be perfect for a holiday at any time of year; it has a wonderful open plan living/dining area, three spacious bedrooms and at the rear of the property there is a swimming pool set in a large open garden which overlooks the Dordogne at the far end. It was very peaceful and relaxing. We had a great time and enjoyed our stay immensely. Highly recommended.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

We have traveled all over France and Italy. Our stay at Le Chabrol was among our finest, most relaxing trips ever. The house is gorgeous, with lovely rooms, a handsome garden, and a stunning setting. The location is perfect for exploring this delightful part of France. The owners have thoughtfully renovated this old stone barn into a perfect holiday getaway. Downstairs is one wonderfully open room, with comfy couches and chairs next to a huge, inviting fireplace. There is a big flat-screen TV and a radio / stereo that picks up the BBC for English-language news and programming. This is a great spot for late-night reading, or planning the day's adventures. Adjacent is a spacious dining area which opens on to the terrace. The kitchen is a cook's dream, with a great layout for multiple chefs. Everything you need is here, from picnic goods to fine dining, as well as a handy laundry and high-speed internet connection at the built-in desk. The owners have provided a thoughtful list of all the local market days. We used this list daily, to plan our outings. Of course we went out for some meals, but one of the great joys of this house is buying the amazing local produce and meats, then cooking at home and enjoying its various spots for a meal - the dining area for chilly evenings, the huge table on the terrace for long, leisurely dinners, a great little round table poolside for morning coffee. There's also a picnic table right on the banks of the river across the meadow. The terrace itself has beds with flowers, herbs, and cherry tomatoes, which we nibbled on daily. Just a few steps up up from the terrace is a delicious pool, heated for morning laps or a dip at the end of the evening. We didn't get to make much use of the luxurious lounge chairs - too many other things to do, alas, for proper lounging! Upstairs are three bedrooms, all overlooking the pool and meadow. It's a joy to wake up in these bright, sunny chambers. The baths are completely modern, with great fixtures and a rain-shower in the master bath. Sensational linens and towels, too. The area is tremendous, from the beautiful nearby village with three restaurants and the breathtaking local countryside. The house has an in-depth guide with ideas for day trips, hours for local restaurants, and recommended shops. Wineries! Chateaux! Markets! Antiques! And the ever-present beauty of the river; this really is a perfect holiday retreat.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

This may be one of the most wonderful places we have stayed in our extensive travels. The stone barn is delightfully outfitted for elegant relaxing, and perfectly situated for local touring. The hosts have given great care and thought to What to See and Where to Go. A helpful list of daily local markets in neighboring towns helped drive our decisions as to where to venture, since we could always buy baguettes and veggies on the way to this chateau or that winery. Perfect ice cream (lavender-infused!) on the way home from the brilliant caves at Lascaux. There is also an invaluable list of area restaurants, complete with details on quirky operating hours and the names of hosts. And there are so many places to explore in the area! From medieval fortified castles to Josephine Baker's chateau, Les Milandes, which had a thrilling avian show on Saturday afternoon. The countryside is breathtaking, so just driving from one place to another is a delightful adventure. Being at home was every bit as delicious. We often bought local produce, meats and cheeses for dinners at home. The house offers a warm dining area inside, as well as tables by the pool, on the terrace, and a picnic spot along the river. With lovely vistas, attractive local walks, and a terrific village nearby, it was a pleasure just to spend the day in and around the house. The house itself is beautifully appointed, with a great chef's kitchen, wonderful linens and towels, beautiful views of the meadow, and a gorgeous pool. Fresh cherry tomatoes from the garden! We loved our stay at Le Chabrol, and would happily return.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

We came for my 50th birthday, and could easily have stayed for the year. The area is simply stunning - gorgeous landscape, fabulous castles, lovely vistas, superb restaurants, and vineyards of every variety. They're not kidding about road-side foie gras stands; we actually wondered if you could die from too much duck! (It turns out you can't.) The local produce is sublime - freshly harvested walnuts and walnut oil make wonderful salads, topped with strawberries. OK, maybe a fit of foie gras, as well. We often had lunch out and then returned home to dine on delicacies bought at the area's many markets. The hosts provide a thoughtful list of all the daily markets in the area, which helps plan the day's touring - with a stop to pick up baguettes, some fresh fish or local meat, and wonderful vegetables. Leisurely dinners are a treat - there are several dining options, including a river-side picnic table and another one poolside. The regional cuisine is rich and varied. Again, our thoughtful hosts have a comprehensive list of places to consider, along with host names, quirks about reservations or hours of operations. And the wines! Make sure to try Montbazillac, which is a rich late-harvest white, almost a sauterne but much less expensive. There are great local reds, and many vineyards with tasting rooms. So many things to see - from 11th century castles to Josephine Baker's chateau, which had a spectacular show of predatory birds on the day of our visit. (Every Saturday, I think.) The trip to world-famous caves at Lascaux takes you on a lovely country drive, and you can stop on the way back for lavender-infused ice cream in the pretty river village of Lemieul. We have traveled all though France and much of Italy. This is among my favorite spots we have ever visited. Even friendly French locals!Recommended for: Romantic getaway
