Ely house description
Cedar Rock Lodge is a one bedroom plus cabin located on a bluff along Shagawa Lake. Renovated in spring of 2012 it features all new appliances, new furniture and pillow top beds. In spring of 2013, a new four season porch was added and deck overlooking the islands. This custom cabin is a one of a kind gem tucked in the cedar trees offering a private escape. Built in the 1940’s by a local craftsman, this cabins exterior is a solid rock structure masoned from the Ely rock bed the cabin rests on. The interior features a coordinating stone fireplace. The original owner took pride in his craftsmanship and customized pine paneling, trim, window framing and built in cabinetry. In the spring of 2012, we began remodeling the historical cabin taking special care to preserve its beautiful bones and adding modern touches to enhance the look and feel. This cabins decor has a quaint feel that makes it a unique Northwood’s experience.
Currently, the cabin sleeps 6 people. It has a new pillow top queen bed in the master bedroom, new full size sleeper sofa's, and a full size pillow top murphy bed . The entire house has received new flooring and window treatments. The bathroom has a standard sized bathub/shower with new tiled walls and a massaging showerhead. The kitchen is fully equipped with a microwave and new appliances. The Sun porch overlooks the lake and walks out to a patio/fire pit area that the original owner built into the rock cliffs in the yard. The cabin has his and her bikes, games, puzzles, books, dishes, binoculars, and flat screen TV and dvd player. It is nicely appointed with the conveniences of home. You will have plenty of opportunities to view wildlife in the back yard. The cabin has a family of ducks that often reside in the tall grass along the shore, chipmunks that can be hand feed on the deck, and loons swimming in the Bay. Tucked in the woods on a rock bluff this location is about as secluded as you can get without a boat and still within minutes to local dining and amenities. Our guests will be greeted with a special care basket filled with local items such as locally roasted coffee, all natural snacks, and coupons to make your stay with us a memorable one. Friday to Friday rentals only with minimum one week stay for Summer 2014 . Saturday to Saturday starting in Septembers.

We really enjoyed our stay at the lodge. It was like being in a home away from home. It was honestly the cleanest property we have ever stayed at. Everything was ready for us when we arrived and we felt so welcomed! I had read the history about the property and that was what really sealed the deal for me on wanting to stay at the lodge. That and being able to bring along our small dog. I showed my husband the property and he booked it to celebrate our birthdays and anniversary. We so enjoyed the welcome basket of goodies and the map to help us find great places to hike and explore. We loved feeding the ducks the corn that was left for us. The kitchen was a real pleasure with such nice cookware. We really enjoyed preparing our meals both indoors and outdoors. We enjoyed the view of the lake so much and spent almost all of our time in the room that looks out over the lake when we were indoors. The bed was very comfortable. There was a nice library of books, dvd's and games for evenings or rainy days. The sunsets were the most beautiful I have ever seen. Just spectacular! I would suggest that if a person likes to recycle that they bring along a box/bag and just carry their recycling home. It's just that simple. I would also like to point out that we did see coyote on the road that led to the lodge. This was a good reminder to keep our dog on a lead and next to us at all times for her safety. We absolutely LOVED this place and hope to return! Thank you for sharing such a historic family treasure with us!

We have been to Ely in the fall many times over the years, but this was our favorite place. The cabin was very clean and nicely updated, retaining its original charm as well. Owners were very accommodating. Location was ideal on the edge of Ely right next to the lake shore. We enjoyed going to bear museum just 2 miles West of Ely, the Ely bookstore above Piragus clothing store, Fall Lake and Bear Head Lake State Park for great hiking. And great dining at Burntside Lodge, Chocolate Moose and Taste of Ely. We can't wait to go back next year.

A great place to feed the ducks

I would recommend the property. It was clean and well maintained. The property managers were great to deal with. I have rented several cabins in the area in the past 4 years and this is at the top of the list for renting again. I can't add anything new to the other reviews...I think it's all been said already.

Just back from our first stay at the cabin and definitely recommend it as the perfect place to stay! We loved its vintage charm along (scalloped wood trim, metal window hinges, and gorgeous stone fireplace) with all the modern conveniences (super washer/dryer, microwave, comfy beds, great water pressure in the shower, and air conditioning!!). It was just the right size and so quiet - even with the float planes and beach across the bay. I met the housekeeper our first day and found her to be very cheerful and helpful. The owners were super responsive when we needed help to start the grill (use the bic lighter, duh!) and we liked their ely and cabin information book. They even left us a bag of corn to feed the chipmunks and ducks. Super thoughtful all around and we will love returning to this cabin. Thanks for a great stay!

The cabin was lovely, well maintained and clean. The lake and location were very nice. The fact that we could not open windows was a serious downfall. The bright streetlight directly in front of the cabin was also a major downfall. Our checkout time was 11:00 am on Friday 8/23, the housekeeper was in the cabin at 10:50 telling us to get out now. She was rude and inconsiderate. We were nearly out and were working on being out by 11, which we did accomplish. In another discussion with her I indicated we had been trying to sort recyclables in the garbage, she said "well we don't do that up here". That is a real shame, and I am sorry to hear that.

Manager response: With the air conditioning being used, we ask that the windows be left closed unless it is turned off. The cabin has two rooms with the original windows that do not have sliders and the bathroom has a block glass window. These do not open but will be replaced this winter. There is a utility light at the bottom of the steps overlooking the lake. We find this safety feature convenient for evenings by the fire pit or late night fishing. The bedroom is on the back side of the property so the light does not shine in the windows. As for recycling, we are unable to recycle due to the fact that garbage service comes on Thursdays at 5AM and it would need to be the responsibility of our guests to get it to the end of the road. It cannot be left out the night before because of skunks and coons. As for the housekeeper, she was given this review to read and we give our apologies to the guest.
Great location. Loved hearing all the loon calls and enjoyed all of the family of ducks in the bay.

Manager response: Two weeks on the lake, could life get any better. We appreciate your business.
This wonderful cabin is very close to the town of Ely (less than a mile). We walked into town several times for coffee at the Front Porch (which has WiFi access) and ice cream at Red Cabin Custard. The best parts of this cabin are the sun porch looking out to the lake, the new deck, and the wood swing out by the dock. We spent most of our time in these three relaxing places. We liked all the ceiling fans in many of the rooms because it kept the cabin cool. One thing to point out that wasn't overly clear from the pictures is that the local swimming beach is on the same bay. It wasn't much of a problem and it wouldn't deter me from staying here again, however it was slightly louder on the nice days than expected. The owners are very welcoming and considerate; they had to drop something off quickly but called before hand to let us know they were coming and didn't linger. We also really appreciated that they allowed us to bring our dog. He loved swimming in the water and we promise we kept him away from the ducklings that live close by. Overall, great little place. We would definitely recommend it.

Manager response: Thank you Laura for letting us drop a trailer of firewood off. Being we were in town for a funeral, it saved us a five hour trip to get wood to our guests for late summer fires. Fourth of July is a busy time in Ely. Town is always alive during holidays and special event weekends. The traffic at the beach/islands always reflect the influx of people. We are glad that you enjoyed the stay and it was nice meeting your family.

This time with family at your cabin has been a blessing for all of us. I've been reintroduced to my wonderful family after being absent, buried in books, for most of the year. All of the knots in my neck are now gone and I'm feeling totally relaxed:)! You get full credit for this - and cheaper than therapy:)!!! We are having a splendid time and the cabin is, as always, wonderful! The additions are great (but we really didn't need any - the cabin was, in our eyes, better than perfect before!) My only thought is you are too kind to your guests:). There really is absolutely nothing you could do to make guests more comfortable. I admire your thoughtfulness and talent for being a gracious host!!! We were sitting on the deck this morning with the pupsters happily at our feet. A woman who looks like the breeder of our toy poodle walked by and our pup ran happily after her. I called her back and as she came running an eagle came over two seconds later in front of us and down the road to Stoney Ridge. I think she was hoping to have a poodle breakfast! We are sadly thinking of going home but thinking about next year already:). We are wondering if you will have the cabin available next year, if so, we would love to return:) So, a sincere thank you for sharing your lovely cabin with us. We deeply appreciate your thoughtfulness and we are grateful for the opportunity to be here. Hope all is well with you and yours! Best Regards,

Marvelous and charming!
Marvelous and charming!
Wonderful place, nicely appointed with everything you need for a northwoods experience. Close to town, BWCA, but in it's own very quiet natural setting. Perfect for anyone looking to get away, yet take advantage of all the area has to offer! You only need to bring food and personal gear to have a great time. The owners and cartakers were friendly and helpful. The cabin is very clean and lovingly cared for, obviously family owned and so appreciated we felt like one of the family. The beds were comfortable. The kitchen was fully furnished with new appliances. The washer and dryer were convenient to have. This is a great spot for family reunions, family's with kids, as a base for wilderness day trips, a place to sit back and unwind, small groups of people, It is accurately portrayed in it's photos and description. The local food was all very good and all services and local attractions are within minutes, although you'd never know that from the seclusion and quiet of the beautiful location. If you are a walker you may not even need your car. Nice spot and great owners to work with. The Forest Service Sea Plane base accross the bay was very entertaning to watch. This cabin is easy to find, immediately relaxing, and hard to leave. We can't wait to go back. Hurry, the resident chipmunks are waiting!

Manager response: Thank you for leaving the ceramic fairies hidden in our woods and on the island. My young daughter was delighted to find a fairy and has named the hide out pixie hollow. She told me I couldn't come on the fairy hunt unless I believed. You added a fun element to the cabin and a family memory that my daughter will always remember. "Pixie Hollow" a hidden secret for the true believers to discover the magic.

Year Purchased: 2012
About: This cabin has been in our family for 30 years. It was the Northwoods Camp where 4 generations learned to love and appreciate the simpler things in life. In 2011 the owner passed and the cabin was cared for by its estate. Our family missed the traditions and we purchased the cabin in the early spring of 2012. Dan is an engineer at Polaris Industries, Sinnamon owns a clothing store, and Amelia is eight years old. Three loving dogs complete our family. We live 5 hours away and life is busy. We love our escapes to the cabin to get away from it all. Dan enjoys walleye fishing on Shagawa Lake, Amelia loves exploring the islands and Semers Park and Sinnamon always makes time to shop, go to the spa and dine at the downtown businesses. In the evenings, we like to sit by the fire and listen to the loons. We can't make it to the cabin as much as we like so we have opened our doors to guests to help them escape to the untouched northwoods that we call our home away from home.
As many stories begin the history of Cedar Rock Lodge is a tale of love and love lost. In the early 1940’s the lakeshore of Schaver Bay and surrounding area was a cow pasture. A husband and wife moved into the area and begin construction of a new home on the rocky ravine. Saima purchased the land for $1.00 and an undisclosed duty titled on the abstract as personal services. The couple begin their life together in this home but, as years past Saima’s heart was no longer in the marriage This homestead still exists south of Cedar Rock Lodge on the adjacent property. A fire swept through the area and changed the look of the home in 1945. Saima rebuilt the home after the fire but the couple’s relationship was not able to be saved. They separated their assets and divided the property. The man of the house was still very much in love with Saima but she had other interests. On the edge of the property line, he built a garage with an apartment above where he lived and kept a watchful eye on his ex- love Saima. The house and garage still remain standing after renovations on the adjoining lot to Cedar Rock Lodge. As you can about imagine, Saima did not like the constant supervision and him watching over the coming and goings on the property. There was not only a battle taking place on the two properties but the United States was at war. Saima’s ex-husband was sent away to defend the country while Saima was planning her attack on the home front. The land that Cedar Rock sits on was a huge rock outcropping. The rock bluffs overlooking Shagawa Lake was a feature Saima knew her ex- husband cherished. He gave her this land in the divorce thinking it would never be possible to construct a home on. While he was away at war, she had the rock blasted and her new love masoned the home out of the rock. When the soldier returned life was much differnet for him. He continued living next door into his 80's watching over Siama.
