136 Younger Way is located atop Santa Cruz's Beach Hill, an easy downhill stroll to the Pacific Ocean, Main Beach volleyball courts, the historic Santa Cruz Wharf and the famous Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Surfers and boogie boarders are just minutes away from Cowell’s (beginner waves) and Steamer Lane (expert waves). Explore downtown shops, restaurants and coffee shops which are easily accessible by a 10 minute walk. There are endless other recreational options in Santa Cruz County including mountain biking, hiking, sailing, kayaking and scenic trains through redwood forests.
The guest cottage is a completely renovated (2012) studio with one bath and kitchenette, located on the same property as a Craftsman style home. High ceilings allow for an open feel within the studio cottage. Enjoy the small deck area outside and shared BBQ with the main house on the property.
This cottage is a relaxing getaway and perfect retreat. The property lies on a quiet one way residential street occupied almost solely by year round residents.
If you need more space, you can also view the VRBO listing for the main home - VRBO listing #413289. We live in the main house as our primary residence, but rent it during the summer months, holidays, and some weekends.

My wife and I stayed for 6 nights during a recent Santa Cruz vacation. I can't recommend it highly enough. Everything is brand new. Very light and bright. The cottage is tastefully decorated, and includes everything needed for a comfortable stay. Being detached from the main house gives it a good sense of privacy. Chad and Jodi (and the kids) are very gracious hosts. Location makes for easy walks to the boardwalk, Lighthouse Field, and West Cliff Ave. Thanks for the hospitality, and for the wonderful stay! We'll be back.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.

We rented this adorable little cottage while visiting friends that live in Santa Cruz for Thanksgiving. Great location within walking distance to boardwalk, wharf and downtown areas. Unit is very clean and nicely decorated with a comfortable bed. It's also nice to have the little kitchen area, and the shower is nice as well! Owners provided great suggestions for places and things to see around the area. Will stay here again if we ever need a place in Santa Cruz. Thanks!Did you find this review helpful? Problematical stay in tiny, impersonal, converted, one-car garage

Unfortunately, several things made my stay at this “cottage” very disappointing. 1) Throughout the time I reserved, arrived, and stayed here my only contact with the owners was by Email, that is, I never once spoke to them on the phone or saw them in person. 2) The entrance to the “cottage” was right by a row of several overflowing trash cans. 3) The “cottage” is actually a tiny, converted, one-car garage furnished with the bare minimum. There was one small clothes closet in which some of the owner’s equipment was stored but there was hardly any space to store one’s suitcase or to place one’s personal belongings. 4) There were no telephone, radio, or TV in the “cottage”; the internet connection did not work and there was no way to repair this problem or to reset the internet connection because there was no indication of where in the cottage the contact was (perhaps?) located. 5) The bathroom was so tiny that one could hardly use the narrow sink because there was no space for one’s elbows. The shower had a water outlet that delivered water at low pressure from a small nozzle located in the ceiling, very far above one’s head. It was thus possible to get the top of one’s head and one’s shoulders wet, but not much else. 6) The porch area for the “cottage” was a tiny area sandwiched between the garage and the larger porch for the adjacent house; the porch area was cluttered with some of the owner’s (gardening?) equipment, shaded by trees, and got essentially no sunlight. 7) Throughout my stay here I felt ill, as though I had a cold. After reading in the “guest book” that the immediately preceding tenants stayed in the garage with their dog, I realized that the symptoms that I thought were a cold were instead an allergic reaction to the recent presence, in this tiny enclosed space, of this dog!Owner response: We regret that you did not have a good stay at our property and are surprised to just hear of your concerns now, two months after you stay. Since you have raised your frustrations in a public forum; we will respond here. 1. We are always accessible by phone, email or text to our guests. We cannot offer in person contact for all of the guests staying at our property We did not receive any contact from you other than email during your stay and did not realize you would have liked more contact. 2. We apologize for the overflowing trash cans; they were relocated on the property after another guest brought this to our attention. It was handled immediately. 3. The studio guest cottage is as described in the VRBO listing; and the photos clearly show it is a converted garage, which is very common in Santa Cruz. The small closet is shown in the photos, and contains an iron, small ironing board and a fan for guest use. I don't know what equipment you'd be referring to. 4. There is no TV and other entertainment/communication devices aside from WiFi and this is noted in the VRBO listing. We would gladly have addressed your concerns regarding the internet if you would have contacted us during your stay. 5. The bathroom is small as shown by the photos on VRBO. There is a rain shower head, also shown on VRBO. 6. The porch is as depicted in the photos on VRBO. It does not get a lot of sun, but is shaded by a privacy fence and small tree. We apologize for any equipment left by our gardener. We would have attended to this if you had let us know during your stay. 7. We apologize for the inconvenience of the dog; we have adopted a no pet policy as of September 1, 2012. We welcome guest feedback and it is particularly helpful to know of your concerns during your stay so that we can address them to make your stay as best as it can be. Again, we are sorry to hear you did not enjoy your stay. Best wishes for better travels in the future. Jodi and Chad

This rental was perfect for our little family. It is an ideal distance from both the beach and Santa Cruz's darling downtown shopping area. Trader Joe's is an easy walk, which was nice for stocking the rental's provided kitchen with essentials. Jodi and Chad had everything we needed in the kitchen to make a daily breakfast and enjoy an afternoon snack and cocktail (perfect little outdoor seating area provided for the latter.) We were traveling with our eight-week-old and Jodi had the pack n play all set up and thoughtfully provided a white noise machine to help our little one sleep. Our bed was comfortable and cozy. The rental is nicely decorated with Chad's photos and was well equipped all around. We were quite comfortable there. Jodi and Chad were easy to work with and even though we didn't see them much during our stay, I knew they would be readily available if needed. Overall it was a great experience and a good match for us. I would certainly stay here again if our travels brought us back to Santa Cruz.Recommended for: Tourists without a car, romantic getaway.

Pristine little cottage in Santa Cruz was perfect for our one night stay. It was easy to find and we were close to all the attractions. Spent most of our evening sipping wine and reading on the lovely little porch. Though we didn't use it, we thought the book put together by our hosts was great--it's nice to have an insider scoop on attractions and restaurants in the area.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.
Owner response: Thanks Elizabeth - glad you enjoyed your stay and the outside space, we just added some more greenery there! Didn't realize you were from the mid-west, so great to host you in Santa Cruz! Travel back any time!

This little cottage is a gem! We had a great time staying in Santa Cruz in such a prime location. We were able to rent bikes close by, go surfing, and hit the boardwalk. Jodi and Chad were hospitable and gave some fantastic recommendations to local restaurants. If we decide to do an overnight in Santa Cruz again, we will definitely be back! The cottage was cozy and tastefully decorated, making our stay there extremely pleasant. Thank you again for a great vacation!Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.

Very nice studio apartment with lovely bathroom and comfy, stylish furnishings. Kitchen suited our needs for making coffee in the morning. Owners are very nice and helpful too. It's location is great. We walked to the wharf, boardwalk, center of town - did not use our car at all. I highly recommend this lovely place.Did you find this review helpful? My husband, 17-month-old daughter, and I had a wonderful stay at this cottage. The property is very clean and thoughtfully decorated. The location is perfect: about a 2-block walk to the wharf/beach/Boardwalk area and about a 10-minute walk to downtown. The owners are attentive and made the stay relaxing and enjoyable. They have a great information binder about the area as well that we found helpful. We would definitely stay here again!Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, families with young children, age 55+.

This place could not have been in a better location! Just a couple blocks from the beach and boardwalk, and walking distance from downtown Santa Cruz. It was cute, clean and had everything you'd need for a few night's stay. Bed was pretty hard and uncomfortable which was the only downside. We didn't spend much time in the unit because of the great location!Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway.
Owner response: Sorry for my delayed response; thanks so much for the feedback Bevin, I'm glad you had a good stay. A note to future vacationers, we purchased a fibro-bed top for the mattress based on this feedback when we returned in August. It seems to have helped. Thanks again! Jodi

Year Purchased: 2011
About the owner: We moved to Santa Cruz in July 2011 from Chicago. It's been quite a culture shift; but we love it, we love the relaxed and friendly culture of Santa Cruz, we really think there's no place like it and we have traveled all over the world. We've been married 16 years and love sharing new experiences We've traveled to 41 countries together and have a passion for social justice issues; both globally and locally. Chad is currently pursuing a socially minded start up company focused on job creation in Rwanda and Jodi works as a psychotherapist at UCSC's Counseling & Psychological Services. Our boys love living in Santa Cruz; playing at the beach, soccer at Depot Park, or riding their scooters at the Bike Park.
Why the Owner Chose Santa Cruz:
We took a 12 week sabbatical in 2009; volunteering for a fair trade retailer who was located in Santa Cruz. We spent 6 weeks in Santa Cruz and 6 weeks in East Africa. After returning home to Chicago, we decided to pursue a different journey in life, sold our home in and in time decided we wanted Santa Cruz to be our new home. We love the relaxed neighborhood feel up on Beach Hill, it's so close to all the action, but being on a one way street keeps it quiet and relaxed!
We decided to down size when we moved to Santa Cruz, and we loved the Craftsman architecture of this home and the outdoor spaces. We converted the single stall garage into a cottage unit by adding a small addition on the side. We wanted a place for grandparents and friends from the midwest to stay when they came to visit. All of our guests have loved the little cottage.
The Unique Benefits at this Studio:
Relaxation and fun are the two things we love about living at 136 Younger Way. We can stroll down to the beach for 30 minutes, hop on our bikes for some boogie boarding fun, or relax at home listening to the summer beach concerts.
This little studio cottage is small, but has everything you need for a comfortable stay!
