Block Island barn description
The Barn is an idyllic, peaceful escape from the summertime crowds in town. Located the bluffs above Long Island Sound, it has a spectacular view of passing boats and sunsets from the large windows on the west side, and sweeping views of the Audubon property from the open hayloft doors on the east An outside stairway leads to the upper floor of the Barn, one large space with a king-size bed built up for views to the west and a queen-size bed at the other end. The bathroom with shower is a separate room with a window above the sink overlooking rolling fields and the sunrise. The kitchen area has granite counters and two sinks and is furnished with a small fridge, a gas two-burner cooker, coffee machine, toaster oven, etc. The ground floor of the Barn is used as a studio/sculpture gallery and as storage for vehicles in the winter… not used when guests are in residence.
The separate driveway to the Barn passes the owner's large vegetable and flower garden. There is a picnic table and charcoal grill, hammock and Adirondack chairs for relaxing in the sun. The property has a private path to the rocky beach, excellent for surf-casting, beach combing and picnics. Swimming is not recommended because of the difficulty in getting in and out of the water over the stones.
Suitable for a couple or a small family, the Barn at Schooner Point is romantic. A car is strongly recommended because it is at the end of a long dirt road, about 3 miles from the ferry, restaurants and swimming beaches.

Perfect Anniversary Getaway Spot
Perfect Anniversary Getaway Spot
We just watched the sun set on our final evening at the Barn and we are so sad to be leaving this beautiful place. The Barn has been perfect in so many ways. Romantic and private, but close enough to great dining, hiking, galleries and beaches. The Barn is lovingly decorated with antiques and whimsical sculptures. The owners are friendly and responsive. No hassles with cleaning fees and security deposits -- very straightforward arrangements that kept things simple. Most importantly, we don't know anywhere on the planet where you get an ocean vista like this for the price. Highly recommended.

Year Purchased: 1946
About the owner: We inherited this 10 acre property from my husband's parents who bought it in 1946. The original house was built in 1840 and we have added on to it, doing all the work ourselves. We are both artists; Sean is a sculptor of stone and Leslie does reliefs in terracotta/majolica. We live 6 months in our house on the property (May-November) and 6 months in Pietrasanta, Italy (November-May. We built the Barn in 1997.
Why the Owner Chose Block Island:
Sean's family bought the property because they fell in love with Block Island and with Schooner Point in particular. They felt it was very like Ireland with its brilliant blues and greens and its rolling stone walls. They chose this particular spot because it was far (3 miles) from the more populated parts of the island and because it was so near the ocean. In 1946 there was much to choose from but Schooner Point won their hearts.
The Unique Benefits at this Barn:
No matter how crowded it gets in the summer on Block Island, it's always peaceful at Schooner Point.
