We were specifically looking for 3 things: 1) an uncrowded, quiet place on the water 2) a place we could take our dogs 3) a great kitchen to cook & enjoy fresh seafood MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! Hope to be back soon!!

There is truth in advertising! This house is indeed a Very Special Place. It has everything you need to make your stay a pleasure. It’s easy to take care of and makes you feel right at home. This was my first time as a snowbird from Michigan and I did lots of research before renting this house. I wanted a house not a condo, one that would take a large dog, and was on the water. A tall order. While weather in Jan and Feb did not allow me to use the screened in back porch much, I can imagine it would be wonderful in summer. The live oak trees with hanging moss give plenty of shade. I was able to relax on the front deck and look out on the bay. The living room and master bed room doors open right out on the deck. There is plenty to do. The Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge is just across the street. Guided hikes are offered three days a week. Sign up for one lead by a woman named Char West if you want to know everything about the plants, people, and history of the area. Mobile Street, about ¼ mile towards town, is the public access to the Gulf beach. A paved bike/walk path starts at the Peninsula golf course, about 5 miles towards town and goes all the way into Gulf Shores. Orange Beach has the Hugh S Branyon backcountry trail system with about five or six different trails. Both Orange Beach and Gulf Shores libraries offer lectures or movies each week. Bodenhamer Recreation Center has lots of monthly membership options at very reasonable prices. It’s a block from the Gulf shores dog park. The ferry ride to Dauphin Island Sea Lab is fun. No need for a car if that is all you are going for, but there is no place to eat on site – the cafeteria is only for people who do research there. Otherwise food is about 2 miles away. But it would be a nice bike ride. There always seemed to be a church or fire department, or other organization that was having a fund raising supper. Lots and lots of places to eat in town, My favorite was DeSotos Seafood Kitchen. Tours of the historic Swift-Coles house are interesting and there are several museums in the area. Fort Morgan itself was not all that exciting. You need to be “Battle of Mobile Bay” buff to truly appreciate it. But I did find a 2nd order Fresnel lens in the gift shop. Lighthouse fans will know what I’m talking about. Never made it to the National Navel Aviation Museum in Pensacola. But that’s OK. Since I’ll be coming back next year I’ll but it on my to-do list. Hope the new dock will be kayak friendly:-)

It took about 30 seconds from arrival before I felt I'd left "the world" behind, or as Laura said, I was "off the grid". The girls impressions: Celia: "I love the colors! This is great." Wendy: "Let's make this a tradition- sign up for a week every year!" Laura: "It doesn't get any better than this." We all loved watching the "Board of Directors" (the pelicans) gather on the pilings in front, while the rest of the employees (sea gulls) covered the pier- sometimes to the east, sometimes to the west. We swam, hiked, shopped, explored - Loved it all! - The J. Girls (Barb, Laura, Wendy, Celia)

We had a great time on our vacation in Fort Morgan. The house was great. Everything we needed and more was provided. Don't bother bringing stuff to do, this house has it all. There were several board games, a plethora of books in all genres, etc! Everything was perfectly clean and ready to be used. The inside exceeded our expectations. We loved the outdoors as well. Our GPS told us we were heading straight into water and that was definitely the case. The house sits right on the bay! There is a small man-made beach in the front yard. Our only disappointment was that there was no way to get to the water, and the house did not have it's own dock. Thankfully, there are so many beach entrances just down the road, that we got over our initial disappointment very quickly. Our doggies and kiddos loved exploring the yard. With all of those trees though, make sure to bring bug spray!! :) The decks and porch were magnificent and had a great view and great seating. The owner was fantastic. She sent several emails and answered any questions we had before we even got there. She even called us about 20 minutes after we arrived to see everything was OK. She had made a book about the area with tons of brochures and coupons. The only thing I would say to include is a list of good restaurants, including delivery, and where the beach access is to the area beaches. No big deal though, just a suggestion. :) The area was great. We LOVED staying in Fort Morgan. We did have to drive 20 minutes to Wal-Mart or most food, but it was worth it. We drove into Gulf Shores one time and decided never to do it again! The traffic and people everywhere were not worth it! LOL. Fort Morgan was quiet and felt like your own little island. The beaches are great and there is tons of access down the road. Fort Morgan beaches also allow dogs! No other Gulf Shores beach does. We did not go to the Refuge or Fort Morgan, but we had a great time at the regular public beaches. We had other plans like visiting the zoo or The Track, but ended up loving where we were so much that we didn't do anything else! Just the house, the beach, and Wal-Mart. Haha! I would definitely recommend this area and this house to anyone going to Gulf Shores. It was perfect for us, the owner is great, and everything we wanted was nearby. No, there is no water access at this particular house, but it really was not a big deal to drive just down the road for great, free beaches. We will definitely stay here again!

Owner response: A pier and water access is on my wish list for next year. All building in the water was prohibited this year due to the installation of oyster reefs by The Nature Conservancy. The oysters must get established before exposure to any silt in the water. My apologies to the Sweeney family that I apparently neglected to inform them that my neighbor to the east welcomes guests on his pier as long as they are considerate and clean up behind themselves. There is also a ladder off the bulkhead for water access.
