We have been working on getting 3 couples to Charleston for two years now. Finally, I pulled the trigger and booked with the Cookhouse. Wow - I guess there is no other way to put it. Our group was overwhelmed by the experience. The owners are gracious to a fault. The property is spotless. The location is nestled in a quiet neighborhood. The linens are top rate and the ambience is priceless. In fact, on our second night, we cancelled dinner reservations and ordered a pizza so we could just sit outside in the very private courtyard and enjoy the evening. It will be one of our favorite memories for years to come. And - I have to mention parking. In searching for a location we needed to be able to park. All three couples were coming from a different direction and we all had a car. This seems simple - unless you've tried to park in Charleston. The Cookhouse has parking. And, it is two blocks from bus and trolly stops; an easy walk. David - thank you ever so much for your kindness, your hospitality and for providing us an amazing experience.

My husband and I and three adult children just spent an amazing 5 days at the Cookhouse!! We have been to Charleston many times and knew instantly what a prize we had found! Very historical, private, lovely gardens and parking area which is difficult to find in Charleston!! The owners have done a remarkable job with the restorations to the house with all the modern amenities while the antiques and other embellishments made us think we had really stepped back in time. We rented both units and had more than enough room! It was in a wonderful location 15 minute walk to the heart of Charleston! Would absolutely enjoy staying at the Cookhouse in the future!!

Beautifully remodeled and professionally decorated home away from home. My husband and I and our 3-year old daughter stayed at the Cookhouse for a week and had a great time. We walked everywhere and took the trolley all over town. A great treat. Pauline and family, California

We just returned from a long weekend in Charleston and were fortunate enough to have booked the John Robinson Cookhouse. The place is immaculate, the interior design impeccable, and the location is perfect with private, off-street parking which we learned is a definite commodity in Charleston. David was extremely responsive to all our inquiries and very helpful and accommodating upon our arrival. We will definitely stay here again if/when we return to Charleston!

I love this property! Such a gem. Newly renovated space...decorating was beyond charming, and what you envision for historic Charleston. We stayed in the upper unit with 4adults and then one kiddo on an air mattress. If you enjoy your family :) the space was plenty big...but it is definitely perfect for two if you are planning the romantic giveaway. For more than 1-2 couples, you could rent both units and have the house to yourselves. Loved the patio area out front, loved how the entire place is tucked away inside the wall of the whole property. The owners/operators are wonderful... quick to respond to emails, so easy to work with. This made our experience all the more enjoyable. You are a "strolling" 15 min walk through beautiful neighborhoods to Fig, 20 min walk to Market and all the good shopping on King, Husk and Poogans on Queen. It's a 5 minute pedicab ride to those areas as well. 5 min walk over to the Charleston museum, etc. 15 min drive over to Sullivans Isl. We have stayed in downtown Charleston several times, and this was easily my favorite. So glad we found it, and we will definitely stay again. Just awesome.

I had the pleasure of having my small wedding ceremony in the garden at the Cookhouse. My family rented the lower level of the house and it was perfect. We struggled for weeks to find a secluded garden in Charleston that would allow me to have my wedding ceremony for about 20 people. David agreed to let us have it at the Cookhouse and it couldn't have been more perfect. They were absolute dreams to work with and the setting was breathtaking. It is an easy walk to King Street and it very close to the Visitor's Center and trolley line. The unit itself was impeccable. The kitchen was fully stocked with everything we needed and the pull out sofa was very comfortable. The bed in the bedroom was extremely comfortable as well with high quality bed linens. The exposed brick floors and wood painted walls were very charming and lend themselves to beautiful pictures. We plan on staying here next year as well for our anniversary. It was truly a magical place with gracious owners. I cannot say enough good things about the home, the owners and the location. You will not be disappointed in this rental!

We visited Charleston for 3 days and picked the Cookhouse off of the internet. It was wonderful. The accommodations were very clean and it was obvious that this place has just been recently restored. The owner lives in the main house on property and was extremely helpful and friendly. I would definitely recommend this unit and would certainly book again when I next visit Charleston.

We recently rented out both units for 3 nights with another couple. I have to echo what everyone else has said regarding the exceptional hospitality from Dave and his wife, along with the quality of the furnishings, and the location to the Aiken Rhett House, King St. and the historic area. All easy to walk to, take the free trolley to or a fun pedi-cab ride. We thoroughly enjoyed every minute of our stay here. The beautiful weather allowed us to use the courtyard in the morning for coffee and in the evening for wine and cheese. Upper King St. has changed a bit since our last visit and we really enjoyed the Farmers Market on Saturday, along with the some bars including, Proof (for craft cocktails, wine and cheese) and Not Open For Business (for a huge variety of beers on tap). While we have stayed downtown in the past, I would highly recommend staying here for both the price and the privacy.

My husband and I had the pleasure of staying 3 nites in the ground floor unit of this wonderfully restored property. It's a perfect way to experience the charm of Charleston. The property is located a short walk from upper King street and the Visitor center. While it's a nice walk down to Broad and we made it multiple times, you can catch the free trolley at the visitor center if you want to save some steps. Charleston Museum and the Aiken Rhett house are practically next door and we would recommend both. Nice walk to restaurants like FIG and Basil. The house is beautifully done and very comfortable. Grounds are lovely and you can enjoy breakfast or drinks in the garden. Extremely quiet! We hope to stay here again on future trips to Charleston.

We had a wonderful stay. The pictures do not due justice to the Cookhouse. It is beautiful on the outside and inside. Alot of thoughtfulness was put in to our stay and we really appreciated the little things. The beds are the most comfortable beds I have ever slept in away from home. The owners really pamper you with all the amenities of a hotel but with all the comforts of home. I have already told all my friends about the Cookhouse and would recommend it anyone who wants to stay in a nice, affordable, place while visiting Historic Charleston. We are planning our next trip back already!! Thank you so much for all the little things and the warm welcome!!

The property was charming, clean, and well maintained. It is in walking distance to many of the major attractions and restaurants in Charleston. The owners were polite and helpful. The only problem was one of logistics. At the time the house was reserved, I was unware that the second floor would be rented separately to another family (this was not mentioned on the website...or if it was inferred I missed it, this was my first rental through VRBO). This was not a big deal overall, but it meant our group (reunion of friends) would have to curb our noise levels after hours. We were expecting to have the whole place to ourselves. Aside from that, I would definitely recommend this place to others.

We stayed at the Cookhouse as the last stop on a multi-state summer vacation. What a relief it was to arrive at such a stunning location after driving for 10 hours! As a professional in home design, merchandising and construction, I can tell you that no detail was overlooked in creating an experience worthy of its historic location. From the construction and interior finishes to the decor and amenities such as the highest quality sheets and towels, the place is exceptional. Ask the owners about the history of the cookhouse and the transformation of the place after it was devastated after Hurricane Hugo. It is also in very close proximity to King Street and all of the restaurants and sights in town. While you're there, do not miss the Aiken Rhett House located virtually next door. The Aiken Rhett house was built by John Robinson originally and is a unique museum today. Instead of restoring the home as has been done with most of the mansions in Charleston, this place is a time capsule and is being preserved in the state it was in when acquired by the entity that operates it now. I have never seen anything like it. It has remarkably well-preserved slave quarters, a cookhouse and a carriage house on property that is surprisingly large for being in the city. It is a must-see! Anyway, I recommend the John Robinson Cookhouse to anyone who is seeking true southern hospitality with modern comforts.

We just spent the weekend in this newly renovated historic home (cookhouse). We rented out both suites and enjoyed every minute of it. Walked to King Street, Market Street. Sat in the beautiful courtyard and enjoyed the streets surrounding the house. Thank you, Dave and Monica for a beautiful place and for the great deal!

My husband and I recently celebrated our 16th anniversary at the Cookhouse. We could not have been more thrilled with our stay. The pictures do not do this place justice. Every detail was meticulously thought out and nothing overlooked. This is a fully renovated house, literally from the ground up. It has central heating and air, amazingly comfortable beds, a small kitchenette that is the perfect size for vacation and it is in a great location to walk to upper King St. It's located one block from the trolley line so getting anywhere around downtown without a car is extremely doable. I cannot recommend this place enough and look forward to our next visit. Eateries I recommend within walking distance: Paolo's Gelato, Cupcake, Basil (Thai), Coast (much better seafood than the more touristy areas down by the Market) Closed For Business & Chai's.

My husband and I visited Charleston for a conference June 27-30 and had the absolutely delightful pleasure of staying at the John Robinson Cookhouse. We arrived quite late on the 27th and were still cheerfully greeted by David and given a lovely nightcap to relax us after our long drive. The home is really beautiful and the reviewers are correct to say the photos don't do it justice. Monica has decorated each room with perfect style. The Cookhouse has been completely renovated and is charming, comfortable, chic, modernly appointed and fully-stocked. We can't wait to return to Charleston and stay here again. We even plan to send our parents as a gift! Thank you David and Monica!

We stayed here for a weekend to explore the city and go to the beach. I was able to book this a week before our arrival and the owner was so gracious. It's located in a residential area and hidden behind a beautiful home. The outdoor area was beautiful and its equipped so that you can easily prepare meals in the kitchen if you choose to do so. This is 1 block from Meeting Street and another block from King Street. We were 2 blocks from the Visitor's Center to grab a map and within walking distance to all the shops and restaurants. We wouldn't have moved the car the whole weekend, but we decided to go to the beach. There was no cleaning fee and taxes were included in the price. Very private, perfect location and we will definitely be back!

Stunning property! This exceeded my expectations in character, cleanliness, decor and location to downtown. My daughter and I stayed here and absolutely loved it. The unit was absolutely immaculate and beautifully decorated. Only a few blocks to the heart of King Street with a plethora of stores and restaurants from which to choose. We parked our car and walked the entire weekend. A little bit of a hike to the Battery but no problems if you are in shape and have comfortable walking shoes. I will definitely stay here again. Highly recommend!
