Where else can you look over your own beach to watch the sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean, and turn around to watch the sunset over your own beach on Nantucket Harbor? The home was built 'upside-down' to take maximum advantage of the phenomenal 360 degree views. Upstairs are the living areas and two bedrooms--one overlooking the ocean and the other facing the harbor. One has a private half-bath en suite and a queen size bed. The other upstairs bedroom, has two twin beds. There is full bath upstairs. The living room-dining room area is open with 180 degree views from the west to the south to the east. There is a wrap- around deck with access from two sliding glass doors in the dining and living rooms. There is a fireplace in the living room. The kitchen is small (but big enough for several people to work together) and equipped for your cooking needs.
Downstairs is another bedroom with twin beds and a full bath with shower. There is another large room that can function as a den or living room. The laundry room is also downstairs.
Outside, down the the steps from the deck is a short path (less than a hundred feet) leading down to the ocean beach. Down the driveway and across the dirt road in the opposite direction there is a path, maybe a hundred feet, through the Rosa Rugosa to the harbor beach.
Rates are discounted for May, June, September and October

Our home is off a graded dirt road that turns into sand track several hundred yards beyond our house. North of our house are only three houses and then it is 5 miles of wilderness beach to Great Point. Access is by 4 wheel drive. Across the harbor is Coatue, another wilderness peninsula 5 miles long. The view from the upper living floor and wrap around deck is unsurpassed with beach and water front and back. It is almost like being on a boat. The setting is quiet and serene. Nantucket town is 9 miles away.
Year Purchased: 1968
About the owner: My family always went on summer vacations with the three boys in the back of a station wagon. We would leave Missouri and explore different parts of the US. We first visited Wauwinet in 1964 and fell in love with it, knowing that we would come back again, and we have every year. When the opportunity came to buy some land and build a house, we were thrilled. After my father retired, my parents spent half the year in Wauwinet for the rest of their lives.
I currently live in Portland, Oregon. It is a bit of a trek to get from the Pacific NW to our little piece of paradise, but it is so worth it. I have two brothers who also love the Island, as do our children. Our busy schedules make it hard for us to be there as much as we would like. We are happy to share our home with others and imagine that you will love it too.
Why the Owner Chose Wauwinet: When we were looking to buy a home on Nantucket Island my parents considered every corner of the island, but none were
as special as Wauwinet. Of course it is trite to say and yet it
is true: 'Location, location, location'. No other part of the island
has the combination of views and beach access.
The village of Wauwinet is small, and entirely residential except for The Wauwinet Inn. Many of the houses on this part of the island have been passed on through the generations since the families love their time on this part of the island so much.
The Unique Benefits at this House: I love walking on the beach early in the day, before others' footprints mark the sand. The gentle swoosh of the waves is a constant. One can watch the terns diving for bait fish just off shore where the striped bass or bluefish may be feeding. There are often sandpipers darting to and fro in the froth of the surf.
I love walking up the harbor beach to Haulover Inlet, watching for Oyster Catchers and clamming (with a permit). This, and nearby
Coskata are good places to kayak.
From our house it is 5 miles up the beach to the tip of Great Point and its lighthouse. There are three houses in Wauwinet north of our house, and two at the point.
Across the harbor is Coatue, a peninsula enclosing the harbor on the north, another 5 miles of wilderness. You won't find a more charming, cozy house to rent in the community of Wauwinet and you can't help but love the views of the water, the sunsets, and the chance to walk the beaches, swim in either the Atlantic or the warmer harbor, and explore the rich historical sites and many conservation lands nearby.
