Property description

This is a unique vacation opportunity for couples or families looking for luxury lodging close to Redwood National Park.

Located on the banks of the Smith River -- one of California's finest fishing and kayaking rivers -- the house is surrounded by Redwood, Doug Fir, California Bay, Madrone, and Alder trees. Steps on the property lead directly to the river.

The house has three bedrooms, each with a queen bed.

The downstairs room is more of an apartment with an open living space, private bedroom with queen-sized bed and daybed, two IKEA sofa/chairs that convert to twin beds (for teens), a bath with oversize walk-in shower and second deck that also overlooks the river. The path to the river is just off this lower deck as is the hot tub.

A fridge, coffee maker, electric kettle, microwave and sink means lower floor guests can wake up to a hot cup of coffee or tea. There's a gas grill on the deck if you want to cook up burgers or veggies.

Upstairs, the larger bedroom has an en suite bath with sunken bathtub/shower. A sliding glass door opens up to the main deck overlooking the Smith and wood-covered bridge over Sheep Pen Creek.

A smaller, third bedroom (with full bath across the hallway) also overlooks the Smith.

The top floor of the house is dominated by the open-plan kitchen and living room, with vaulted ceilings and fireplace. Oversize windows and an expansive deck on the second level overlooks the river and only covered bridge in the county. Our hot tub sits on a covered platform, surrounded by trees and overlooking the river.

In the summer when the current slows and the Smith warms there is swimming on the river just below the house -- to one of the big rocks in the river or to a sandy beach on the opposite bank. In the fall and winter, world-class fishing for salmon and steelhead is directly below the house in one of the renowned fishing holes of the Smith.

Life at the house is peaceful, with the sound of the Smith River and Sheep Pen Creek a constant soundtrack. The house sits near the boundary of the Smith River National Recreation Area and Redwood National Park. We are a ten minute drive to Stout Grove and Howland Hill Road, and just over a mile to entrances of Redwood National Park, Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park.

Hiking, swimming, fishing, kayaking, and biking are available either directly from the house's property or very close by. When the rains come, there is excellent mushroom foraging in the area.

Never heard of Hiouchi? It's a small hamlet with a population of just 301 but is considered a world-class destination for people who like to be among old-growth redwoods. Hikers, nature lovers, fishermen and women and birdwatchers come to Hiouchi to commune with the world as it was generations ago. In addition to the Smith, the rock-speckled beaches of the Pacific Ocean are a 20-minute drive to the west. The ocean beaches of Crescent City offer spectacular sunsets, opportunities to hike, whale-watching and a soundtrack of a different kind, from the permanent population of sea lions that live on the rocks off shore.

There's not much nightlife in Hiouchi -- the gas station and general store close at 8pm, and the local Hiouchi Café is open for breakfast and lunch only. Here in the redwoods most visitors are content to leave that shopping and city stuff behind.

Because of our remote location, cell phone coverage can be spotty (Verizon has the strongest signal at the house and most prevalent coverage in the area). A wireless network in the house provides access to the web.

Hope to see you soon.

Location

Some of the world's best salmon and steelhead fishing is available from the house's riverfront property. We are a ten-minute drive to Stout Grove with its hundreds of old-growth redwoods and minutes from excellent hiking. And it's only a 15-minute drive to the ocean beaches of Crescent City.

Owner info

Year Purchased: 2011

About the owner: I'm a city boy who is loving the country life. I traded hanging out in cafes and bookstores for swimming in the river, foraging for mushrooms and building not buying. Business-wise my background is a decade-plus of tech journalism followed by a few years in economic development. I've lived a chunk of my life on the East Coast and SF Bay Area although immediately before Hiouchi I was (along with my wife) a year each in New Orleans and the Dallas-Ft. Worth area. My wife was born and raised in Japan and works as a RN in the local hospital. Travel has been lifelong love of ours. Recent trips have taken us to the middle east (Egypt, Jordan, Israel) and Japan. Favorite trips have been to Patagonia, Thailand, China, and Mexico. Bucket list destinations for us include Bali, Fiji, Iceland and Burma. I've also made memorable trips to Viet Nam and just last year to London and Vancouver. We make our home in a part of California we only dreamed about -- under the Redwoods, on the banks of one of the most beautiful and ecologically rich rivers in the world and just a short drive from fantastic biking, hiking, and beach-combing.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
The clear, pure water of the Smith; amazing wildlife, endless fields of green, behemoth trees, the serenity of a constantly flowing river. Two deck overlooking the river, professional kitchen, hot tub makes this a special place.
