BnB~Hiouchi is a unique lodging option on the banks of the Smith River in Northern California. This is a three-bedroom bnb; this listing features our downstairs suite that sleeps up to five people and is perfect for families. Located on the Smith -- one of the finest fishing and kayaking rivers and the largest undammed river system in the state -- BnB~Hiouchi is surrounded by Redwood, Doug Fir, California Bay, Madrone, and Alder trees. Steps on the property lead to the river where an expansive beach is the jumping off point for fishing, sunbathing, swimming or scrambling over bedrock and through thickets of willow. We're just minutes away from Stout Grove, Boy Scout Trail, Walker Road and other well-known trails and sights.

In the summer when the current slows and the Smith warms there is easy swimming below the house -- to one of big rocks in the river or to a sandy beach on the opposite bank. In the fall and winter, world-class fishing for salmon and steelhead trout is below the house in one of the river's most renowned fishing holes.

BnB~Hiouchi is a three-room bnb and this listing features the downstairs suite. This suite is more of an apartment with an open living space, private bedroom with queen-sized bed and daybed, two sofa/chairs that convert to twin beds (for kids and teens), private bath with oversize walk-in shower and private deck overlooking the river. The path to the river is just off this lower deck. A fridge, coffee maker, microwave and sink means you can prepare food, keep sodas cold, or wake up to a hot cup of coffee or tea. There's a grill if you want to cook up burgers or veggies. An electric cooktop allows for the preparation of simple meals. No other appliances are not permitted.

A two-night minimum stay required, three during major holidays. A county tax of 8 percent is added to room fees. Daily fees include a full breakfast. Reservations are confirmed on receipt of deposit.

Life at BnB~Hiouchi is tranquil, with the sound of the Smith and Sheep Pen Creek a constant soundtrack. The house sits near the boundary of the Smith River National Recreation Area, is a ten minute drive to Stout Grove and the beginning of Howland Hill Road. We are just a mile and a half to entrances of Redwood National Park and the Jedediah Smith Forest. Hiking, swimming, fishing, kayaking, and biking are available either directly from the house's property or very close by. We can help you connect with local guides for fishing or conservation floats on the river.

We serve a breakfast of homemade granola, fresh baked bread, muffins, and something hot (egg strata, beef or pulled pork hash, a tofu/swiss chard scramble or pancakes, for example). Eat in the kitchen or weather permitting on the deck. If you are staying downstairs, feel free to take your morning meal there. Join us for family style lunch and dinner if you like (something we can talk about during your stay or before).

Never heard of Hiouchi? It's a small hamlet with a population of just 301 but is considered a world class destination for people who like to be among old growth groves of towering Redwoods. Hikers, nature lovers, fishermen and women and birdwatchers come to Hiouchi to commune with the world as it was generations ago. In addition to the Smith, the rock-speckled beaches of the Pacific Ocean are a 15 minute drive to the west and offer spectacular sunsets, opportunities to hike, whale-watch and a soundtrack of a different kind (from the permanent population of sea lions that live on the rocks off shore).

There's not much nightlife in Hiouchi -- the gas station and general store close at 8pm. Here in the Redwoods, most visitors are content to leave that shopping and city stuff behind.

Because of our remote location, cell phone coverage can be spotty (Verizon has the strongest signal and coverage in the area). A wireless network in the house provides access to the web and is strongest in the common areas.

Hope to see you soon!

Our 3 night stay at Hiouchi B&B was the highlight of our north coast vacation. Our hosts, Curt and Meg were friendly and extremely helpful when it came to planning our daily jaunts into the redwoods. We stayed in the lower level of their charmingly rustic home overlooking the Smith River. It was clean and comfortably furnished. We felt like we had our own apartment, complete with kitchenette, bathroom, bedroom and living room. We had easy access to the wonderful hot tub, which was a welcome place to unwind with a glass of wine after a long day of driving and hiking. Curt's blueberry muffins, eggs and sausage as well as fresh fruit and granola breakfasts were superb. In fact, we didn't even need lunch! We especially appreciated his offer to cook dinner each evening (for a very nominal fee). There weren't many restaurant options available in Crescent City, and it was just so nice to come "home" and relax while he cooked up delicious, healthy meals. Curt and Meg made us feel like family while treating us as guests. We highly recommend this B&B. Shelley & Fred

We could not be happier with our visit to this wonderful Bed and Breakfast. Our hosts were friendly and accommodating in every way imaginable. They made us feel right at home from the moment we walked in. Each room was beautifully decorated and extremely comfortable. The river view from our room was breathtaking. When we were served breakfast we felt like we were at a five star restaurant. The homemade breads and gourmet foods were delectable. We cannot wait to return. Thank you so much to our hosts

                      Year Purchased: 2011

About the owner: I'm a city boy who is loving the country life. I traded hanging out in cafes and bookstores for swimming in the river, foraging for mushrooms and building not buying. Business-wise my background is a decade-plus of tech journalism followed by a few years in economic development. I've lived a chunk of my life on the East Coast and SF Bay Area although immediately before Hiouchi I was (along with my wife) a year each in New Orleans and the Dallas-Ft. Worth area. My wife was born and raised in Japan and works as a RN in the local hospital. Travel has been lifelong love of ours. Recent trips have taken us to the middle east (Egypt, Jordan, Israel) and Japan. Favorite trips have been to Patagonia, Thailand, China, and Mexico. Bucket list destinations for us include Bali, Fiji, Iceland and Burma. I've also made memorable trips to Viet Nam and just last year to London and Vancouver. We make our home in a part of California we only dreamed about -- under the Redwoods, on the banks of one of the most beautiful and ecologically rich rivers in the world and just a short drive from fantastic biking, hiking, and beach-combing.

The Unique Benefits at this Bed And Breakfast:
The clear, pure water of the Smith; amazing wildlife, endless fields of green, behemoth trees, the serenity of a constantly flowing river; and a huge deck overlooking the river makes this a special place.
