Pear Tree Cottage - Historic Property in the Centre of Mahone Bay
- Minimum stay:1 night
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:Yes
- Wheel chair accessible:No
The recently renovated Pear Tree Cottage is nestled right in the centre of town, minutes away from local shops, restaurants and beautiful historic landmarks.
Built in 1849 it exemplifies how a modest historic building can be modernized for contemporary life without sacrificing its heritage qualities.
What differentiates this property from others in the area is its prime location, quiet environment and beautifully maintained garden.
The property is divided into two adjoining units. The rental unit has two bedrooms on the second floor with a lounge, kitchen and ample bathroom on the ground floor.
The cottage is quaint and suited ideally for a family or couples who are looking to relax in the heart of the Lighthouse route. The layout has not changed since it was occupied by a cooper and shoemaker in the 19th century.
You can enter through the original historic front door into the stairwell opening into the lounge, or through the entry beside the driveway which opens into the kitchen.
A welcome package awaits your arrival; wifi is available on site as well as cable TV and DVD/Blueray player. The kitchen is complete with fridge, stove, microwave, toaster, kettle and all the necessities for making meals — but perhaps you aren't planning to cook during your vacation, and who could blame you, with over 6 restaurants and numerous cafes within 5 minutes walk and the most eclectic coffee house in Canada - The Biscuit Eater, only 30 seconds away!
Bedding, linens, beach towels, toilet tissue, hand soap, iron and ironing board are all available. If you are wondering about specific items, it’s best to ask when booking. Laundry services and mid-stay cleaning are available for an added fee.
The surrounding areas offer live theatre, sailing, biking/walking trails, flea markets, whale watching tours, sea kayaking tours, white sand beaches, various farmers markets, horse and carriage rides, cafes, pubs, art galleries, golfing, spas, and even on-site private wine tastings.

We loved our stay at the Pear Tree Cottage. In our opinion it is the perfect location to spend some time exploring Mahone Bay and surrounding south shore highlights like Lunenburg, Peggy's Cove, Halifax, etc. It is literally a stone's throw from the main intersection of Mahone Bay and the beautiful bay that gives the town its name. Mahone Bay is a picturesque little town with great restaurants (ie. Mateus Bistro), cafe's and shops. The cottage has all of the amenities you need to set up a home base for a week or two and explore. The best thing is it is an easy walk to get a great coffee and scone (ie. The Biscuit Eater) or to go grab a few things at the grocery store. The beds were very comfortable with nice duvet's and lots of pillows and the owners obviously care about making sure their guests have a comfortable and enjoyable stay. I just wish we could have stayed longer.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with teenagers.
Owner response: Thank you for your great review. We wish you could have stayed longer as well! It was a delight to have you and your three girls stay with us. Come back to the south shore soon! Liam and Rebecca

We found "The Pear Tree Cottage" to be our "home-away-from-home", so well equipped and comfortable. Town Centre was just steps away and on our nightly walks, we so enjoyed meeting the locals and exploring the town. Sitting on the deck having a delicious dinner at The Gazebo was one of our highlights - great food and great setting! The Mateus Bistro was fine dining at its best! Liam and Rebecca are very accommodating and friendly hosts, ensuring our stay was everything we anticipated. Thank you for sharing your little piece of paradise.Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+.
Owner response: Don, Jane, Thank you so much for your review, we are trying to ensure everyone who stays here has the same experience that you did. We are so glad you enjoyed yourself and please come back to visit! Yours Liam & Rebecca

My stay at Pear Tree cottage was wonderful. Mahone Bay is a quaint, sea side town, with the waterfront literally "steps" away from the "cottage", which is a fully equipped house. The owners were fantastic, approachable, and went above and beyond to make our weekend carefree. Can't wait to come back!Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, girls getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+.
Owner response: Thanks very much Martha, it was a pleasure having you to stay. Liam & Rebecca

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2011
About the owner: After sailing around the world on the tall ship Picton Castle we decided on a landlubberly life (for the time being) and returned to Nova Scotia in the summer of 2011. We looked for a property that was central, yet still maintained a 'village' feel, and Pear Tree Cottage fit the bill perfectly. We bought the house in the Fall of 2011 and live in the second unit adjoining the rental unit. We both work in nearby Bridgewater; Rebecca as a Physiotherapist/Pilates Instructor and Liam as Commercial Director of a local Agricultural company.
Why the Owner Chose Mahone Bay:
This cottage is so near to local amenities that it is a luxury to be able to walk to get groceries, browse the many shops and boutiques, meet up for a drink, or enjoy dinner at the local restaurants.
We couldn't believe that a house this central could have such a beautiful garden and although it needs a little more work it is coming along beautifully.
Listed on the Nova Scotia Historic Places website and a Heritage property, it has a unique historical significance to the local community. This property exemplifies how a modest historic building can be modernized for contemporary life without sacrificing its heritage qualities.
The Mahone Bay area is treasured for its local artists and craftspeople, eclectic shops, wonderful restaurants, diverse accommodations, great golf, luxurious spas and convention facilities. Our compact town centre makes it easy to get around on foot. The gem of Mahone Bay's historic setting is the beautiful harbour graced by three churches – the most photographed churches in Canada!
Don't be surprised to have complete strangers greet you with a warm 'hello' or 'good afternoon' as you stroll down our streets. The residents of our small town are uniquely friendly and helpful to visitors. So kick back, relax and stay awhile, you'll feel like you've come home.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
You will find it hard not to enjoy our beautiful town, and to have everything you could possibly need within walking distance is a benefit you won't find anywhere else!
If you do feel the need to look around the local area, we are right on the Lighthouse Route, 15 minutes drive from Historic Lunenburg and 20 minutes from Chester.
Chester offers a live theater festival all summer long, several cafes and unique boutiques — even an organic market. Mahone Bay has art galleries, critically acclaimed restaurants, flea markets and antiques. Each town offers amazing dining options and there is usually live music to be found somewhere. Lunenburg also offers whale watching, chartered sailing tours, museums, shopping etc. This area seriously is the place to be in the summer!
