Property description

The recently renovated Pear Tree Cottage is nestled right in the centre of town, minutes away from local shops, restaurants and beautiful historic landmarks.

Built in 1849 it exemplifies how a modest historic building can be modernized for contemporary life without sacrificing its heritage qualities.

What differentiates this property from others in the area is its prime location, quiet environment and beautifully maintained garden.

The property is divided into two adjoining units. The rental unit has two bedrooms & a bathroom on the second floor with a lounge, kitchen and ample bathroom on the ground floor.

The cottage is quaint and suited ideally for a family or couples who are looking to relax in the heart of the Lighthouse route. The layout has not changed since it was occupied by a cooper and shoemaker in the 19th century.

You can enter through the original historic front door into the stairwell opening into the lounge, or through the entry beside the driveway which opens into the kitchen.

A welcome package awaits your arrival; wifi is available on site as well as cable TV and DVD/Blueray player. The kitchen is complete with fridge, stove, microwave, toaster, kettle and all the necessities for making meals — but perhaps you aren't planning to cook during your vacation, and who could blame you, with over 6 restaurants and numerous cafes within 5 minutes walk and the most eclectic coffee house in Canada - The Biscuit Eater, only 30 seconds away!
Bedding, linens, beach towels, toilet tissue, hand soap, iron and ironing board are all available. If you are wondering about specific items, it’s best to ask when booking. Mid-stay cleaning is available for an added fee.

The surrounding areas offer live theatre, sailing, biking/walking trails, flea markets, whale watching tours, sea kayaking tours, white sand beaches, various farmers markets, horse and carriage rides, cafes, pubs, art galleries, golfing, spas, and even on-site private wine tastings.

Pear Tree Cottage is right in the heart of Mahone Bay. In a quiet area and only minutes from local shops and restaurants.

'Mahone Bay is both a postcard-perfect maritime town and an ideal base for exploring the stretch of coastline known as the South Shore.' (Fodor's Travel Wire). Named one of Canada's best small-town downtowns by Harrowsmith Country Life Magazine, Mahone Bay is also considered by many as one of the most beautiful towns in Canada.

Situated on a bay of more than 100 islands, our Nova Scotian town, which the New York Times calls 'pretty as a picture', is a treasury of history, culture and 19th century architecture. The charming main street hosts an assortment of art galleries, specialty shops and living museums - all within an easy stroll.

Romantic restaurants, comfortable small inns, golfing and a full service spa complement the serenity and natural beauty of Mahone Bay to make this a very special vacation destination. Hike or cross-country ski the miles of trails; sail or kayak among the islands or simply relax and enjoy the view!

The Mahone Bay area is treasured for its local artists and craftspeople, eclectic shops, wonderful restaurants, diverse accommodations, great golf, luxurious spas and convention facilities. Our compact town centre makes it easy to get around on foot. The gem of Mahone Bay's historic setting is the beautiful harbour graced by three churches – the most photographed churches in Canada!

Don't be surprised to have complete strangers greet you with a warm 'hello' or 'good afternoon' as you stroll down our streets. The residents of our small town are uniquely friendly and helpful to visitors. So kick back, relax and stay awhile, you'll feel like you've come home.

Owner info

Year Purchased: 2011

About the owner: After sailing around the world on the tall ship Picton Castle we decided on a landlubberly life (for the time being) and returned to Nova Scotia in the summer of 2011. We looked for a property that was central, yet still maintained a 'village' feel, and Pear Tree Cottage fit the bill perfectly. We bought the house in the Fall of 2011 and live in the second unit adjoining the rental unit. We both work in nearby Bridgewater; Rebecca as a Physiotherapist/Pilates Instructor and Liam as Commercial Director of a local Agricultural company.

Why the Owner Chose Mahone Bay:
This cottage is so near to local amenities that it is a luxury to be able to walk to get groceries, browse the many shops and boutiques, meet up for a drink, or enjoy dinner at the local restaurants. We couldn't believe that a house this central could have such a beautiful garden and although it needs a little more work it is coming along beautifully. Listed on the Nova Scotia Historic Places website and a Heritage property, it has a unique historical significance to the local community. This property exemplifies how a modest historic building can be modernized for contemporary life without sacrificing its heritage qualities. The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
You will find it hard not to enjoy our beautiful town, and to have everything you could possibly need within walking distance is a benefit you won't find anywhere else! If you do feel the need to look around the local area, we are right on the Lighthouse Route, 15 minutes drive from Historic Lunenburg and 20 minutes from Chester. Chester offers a live theater festival all summer long, several cafes and unique boutiques — even an organic market. Mahone Bay has art galleries, critically acclaimed restaurants, flea markets and antiques. Each town offers amazing dining options and there is usually live music to be found somewhere. Lunenburg also offers whale watching, chartered sailing tours, museums, shopping etc. This area seriously is the place to be in the summer!
