I was in town visiting relatives and stayed at this enchanting cottage. The neighborhood was safe and I thoroughly enjoyed my morning walks. Coffee shop was less than a half mile away and the neighborhood restaurants were perfect. The cottage was clean, well maintained and had everything I needed. The interior was furnished well and fit the style of the dwelling. I would definitely stay here again!!

The positives:the cottage is quite inexpensive for Charleston and the off street parking is free. The kitchen is reasonably well equipped, except for the lack of a big pot for pasta. The negatives:the cottage is very small and dark. The bedroom is upstairs and the bath is downstairs, which can be an issue at night. ( we saw that from the photos). There are no dressers or drawers, save in the only nightstand, which had sock-size drawers. So you are living out of a suitcase. The bedroom carpet is stained. There are only two functional windows in the cottage (the others are screwed shut). The window over the bed has a broken pane which has been fixed with tape. Although it keeps wind and rain out, it lets noise in. The internet, while fast, is unsecured with a password. When we arrived, there was a brown paper bag from the previous guest in the fridge and the fridge was not clean. There is a small chest in the bathroom but no place to put two people's things. The toilet seat needs adjustment. Although the neighborhood seemed reasonably safe, and was near a couple of good restaurants, it is within a block or two of a rather sketchy neighborhood. We would choose differently next time.

Owner response: We are always available to our guests to attend to their questions and needs. We leave a note for them upon arrival and ask them to call us if they need any additional items or have concerns. We can remedy most needs with a quick text of call from them. With regards to the pasta pot we have several pots and pans in the apartment and are happy to bring over any kitchen item a guest may need. From time to time we have guests that ask for condiments. I try to leave small packets in a tidy container in the fridge, especially for guests who are staying for a number of days. With the exception of these small packets, individual packets of sugar, and tea there is no food in the kitchen. The carpet in the bedroom has been replaced with pergo flooring and we think it looks really nice. For future guests we ask that you contact us as soon as a need arises. We would like the opportunity to remedy any issues while a guest is staying with us. Our property address is available and is noted on the map. We are located in historic Cannonborough, about 6 blocks west of King Street. For "foodies'" we are less than ten blocks from The Grocery, The Ordinary, Indaco, Lucca, McIntosh, and several others that appear in recent travel publications. We are only one block from Lana, Fuel, and Hominy Grill, all local favorites. I would like to add that Charleston is one of the most beautiful cities in the United States. We are proud of the diversity that made this city one of the best cities in the world and we continue to be a welcoming city. As property owners we work very hard (and at a great expense)to maintain our homes. A visitor, through VRBO, should keep in mind that you are staying in a "locals" home. Charleston has the best reputation in this country as being accommodating and friendly. I am certain that any visitor to this city will find that their host will be happy to make their stay delightful.

We stayed for a week in January, 2013. The home was exactly as pictured and the neighborhood was perfect. You can walk to many wonderful restaurants including the Hominy Grill and Two Boroughs Larder (where we had one of the best meals of our lives...and we live in New York City!) The washer/dryer was a major bonus. The bed, as other wrote, was heavenly! Live like a local here.

We had a really good time at this nice carriage house. It's about a 10 min walk from Charlestons main shopping-/dining-/drinking-street King Street. Granted - into the innermost Historic District you might need some more minutes - but why is there a free trolley?!? The house was roomy for two, clean and had all ameneties. We could not have been mor happy with everything!!! The communication with Lois was as easy as possible, everything was perfectly set up for our stay. The area is safe and nice - there are some really good and definitely recommendable restaurants/cafés just around the corner: especially the following - Hominy Grill, Fuel, Sugar. All three: not to be missed. We would definitely come again - because not only the carriage house was perfect, but Charleston is such an awesome and beautiful city!!

The cottage is very cute and nicely located. The free shuttle stops a block and half each way from the property are a must. Unless you are a city dweller and used to the hustle and bustle of the city, I recommend not trying to drive on the peninsula. It's a tangled series of one ways with tricky parking so use the convenient secure parking at the cottage and let someone else do the driving! The accommodation is the perfect combination of classic Charleston with nice updates. The bed is heavenly and there was endless hot water in the deep tub. Soaking was a nice change of pace from all of the walking we did through the tourist areas.

My wife and I stayed here on a beautiful fall weekend and couldn't have been more impressed. The cottage is small and quaint, but appointed perfectly for a couple's weekend getaway. Very charming. What we never expected is how awesome the location was. It is off the beaten path of King street and the market (but still within walking distance), but it is right near some of the best places to eat and hang out on Cannon street! Hominy Grill (our favorite), Fuel Tacqueria, a several other world class restaurants are just a stones throw away, while still being tucked a few blocks away from the college scene. Lois was so accommodating and pleasant to communicate with as well. Stay here, you won't be disappointed!

My wife and I found this charming cottage to be exactly what we were looking for to get away for a weekend. Very quaint, convenient to some excellent restaurants, bakeries and coffee shops but off the beaten path of heavy tourist areas. Six blocks down Cannon Street to Upper King Street we found fantastic new restaurants like The Ordinary, The Grocery and Rarebit to name a few. Accommodations were very clean and comfortable. We found the Owner, Lois, to be very helpful for our visit. We will definitely come back to this cottage in the future.

The “Charming Cottage in Historic Charleston” (VRBO Listing #419722) although “nice” did leave some things to be desired. We did encounter some problems before arriving in that we were not contacted by the owner as our notification indicated, and when we called and emailed the owner we did not get a response. The “backup” phone number given was an office number where the business closed at 2 p.m. on Saturday, which left us without the physical street address and method of entry less than 24 hrs. from our scheduled arrival. The owner did eventually contact us later on Saturday and apologized for the inconvenience as she was in an area without phone service. The cottage itself was clean and quite charming, and the off street parking is a huge bonus for the area. The place is very safe and offered many amenities that made our trip enjoyable. The front porch area is attractive in the pictures; however it connects with the driveway and faces a wooden privacy fence, so to us it was less than what others described in their reviews. The unit is located on the northwest portion of the Charleston peninsula about a mile and a half from the Charleston Market, meaning one can expect to do plenty of walking to get to the heart of the historic district. This was not a problem for my wife and me as we enjoyed the exercise and taking in the sights. We tried one of the dining places only blocks away from the unit and had an enjoyable lunch. What the cottage lacked mostly for us was some furniture to relax in at the end of the afternoon. The living room had a small formal love seat and a single high back chair for seating, but no comfortable place to chill and relax after a full day of walking. That and a very small TV (20-24” perhaps) were the main drawbacks of the Unit, especially with the NBA finals completing the week we were there. The unit was equipped with a washer & dryer however we were given only one set of bath towels. The bed was comfortable, and the upstairs bedroom was large enough, but without a TV upstairs the unit again fell short in a place to stretch out and unwind. We do not consider ourselves “travel snobs” but we do try to provide enough information on our reviews that others may benefit from it. Though this cottage is charming, an improvement in furniture and TV along with a few small details like additional towels, a baking sheet for the oven (no toaster or toaster oven), and a back-up contact number would have upgraded our rating.

Owner response: We always leave contact information in our rentals which includes "let us know if you need anything". We are always happy to run over with supplies or any kitchen items someone might need. We live nearby and can be over in a moments notice. We usually speak with our guests over the phone and give them check in instructions but to improve our service we have modified our confirmation letter so that travelers who might forget their notes can easily refer to the email. Every angle of the cottage is photographed and visible on the VRBO site. It's a cottage and the scale of the furniture should be obvious. We want our guests to be comfortable and enjoy their stay in our beautiful historic city.

Cozy place to stay. A little distance from the French Quarter area, but the price was right - a lot cheaper than what you would pay to stay down in the FQ!

Recommended for: Families with young children, sightseeing, romantic getaway, tourists without a car.

Owner response: We are happy you enjoyed your stay. For those without a car our cottage is located one block away from the free trolly that will take you to all the favorite historic sites in the city. It's easy and economical. We are also located only one block from three popular local restaurants. We hope you can come back and stay with us again.

                      Year Purchased: 2000

About the owner: Lois is a native Charlestonian and has lived in many neighborhoods downtown. She owns a real estate company and has been in the business for 30 years. She has been involved in numerous renovations around the city and particularly loves historic Cannonborough. It is vibrant, diverse, exciting and yet retains so many of the elements that has made Charleston one of the most livable city's in the United States.

                      Why the Owner Chose Charleston:
The house on Cannon Street is particularly sweet. Originally it was a four room house with a center hall and a two story kitchen house at the back. The neighborhood was originally settled by many working immigrants but the architecture is true to Charleston. There are a number of very impressive homes in the neighborhood along with smaller Charleston single style homes retaining their original charm.

The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
The house is situated on a large lot which leaves plenty of room for parking. Each of the three units here have their own porch, perfect for enjoying the afternoon breeze after a long day of seeing the historic sites. The apartments are equipped for cooking but you will probably want to walk a few blocks for some local cuisine.
