Valle Crucis cabin description
Situated on 2 acres on the western slopes of the North Carolina Appalachian Mountains, Fern Hill Overlook offers magnificent mountain views, lots of privacy, and is conveniently accessible to local attractions and activities.
Curve up the driveway between rock ledges and rhododendron to a rustic cabin which is not easily visible from the road. A large carved bear greets your sight as you round the bend in the driveway.
Park under the deck and walk up the stone steps. At the top of the steps, there is a bench big enough for two and a stone patio. It's a great spot for quiet reflection. Go through the house or follow the deck to the front porch for BREATHTAKING mountain views and a glimpse of the river in winter. No other cabins are between you and the river. Put the two rocking chairs together and share nature's beauty and majesty with someone special. Or, soak in the hot tub on the deck and enjoy the scenic views and forest setting. Be sure to keep an eye out for deer passing by but please respect this property as a sanctuary for the native flora and fauna.
This cabin has many amenities including full length windows, an updated kitchen and open floor plan. It is nicely furnished with rustic style furniture and accents. The master bedroom with a reading area takes full advantage of the windows and views. Firewood is provided for the wood burning stove which keeps the cabin cozy in even the coldest weather.
For quick supplies, there's a grocery and gas station just around the bend. Located only 20 minutes from Boone or Blowing Rock, it's a short ride for shopping, touring, or skiing. Head in the other direction and you can spend the day in Tennessee at Watauga Lake! Browse the collection of books in the cabin for reading on a rainy day.
Bear images and figures are included in the decor. Count the bears in and around the cabin and turn in your total to confirm whether you found all of them. Further details are available from the property manager.
Fern Hill Overlook is accessible year round but four wheel drive or chains are recommended for this property in winter months due to the significant slope of the driveway.
Since our primary residence is not in this area, we have elected to handle some of the reservation details through a professional property manager. We believe that ensures local service and expertise to provide you with the best vacation experience.

- Enjoy majestic mountain views, the crisp tang of the air, the abundance of wildlife, the splendor of the leaves in fall, the sound of the river after a rain, and the character of this mountain community! In this very private setting, the hot tub on the deck is a great way to relax while you enjoy the view. It's a short drive to Valle Crucis. Be sure to visit the Mast General Store and Annex there. Music in the Valle features local musicians in the community park on Friday nights during the summer. For “downtown” shopping, it is about 20 minutes from Boone. There’s a great grocery right around the corner from the cabin for any necessities. Ski resorts in the area provide sporting activity in the winter. For warmer weather, there are opportunities for horseback riding, kayaking, canoeing and whitewater rafting. ...moreless

Relaxation is the word!
Relaxation is the word!
This cabin was perfect for a much needed weekend of relaxation. It was quite easy to find and I managed to drive up the steep driveway in my little Civic, so it wasn't as bad as I had thought it might be. The cabin is a little older, but it was very comfortable and felt homey. The owner provided games, books and puzzles for entertainment, and lots of little blankets to curl up with in front of the wood-burning stove. An abundance of firewood is provided for you and the stove really keeps the place warmed up. The hot tub was our favorite part, and as silly as it sounds, sitting in the hot tub with the snow falling on us was magical. I would definitely recommend this cabin for anyone wanting some privacy or a nice spot to come home to after hiking the trails or exploring Watauga Lake, which was just a short drive away. The owner was very nice to talk to and having a local property manager was reassuring in case anything had gone wrong. We can't wait to visit again.

Manager response: We're so glad that you had a relaxing stay and look forward to welcoming you back!
Wow! What breath taking views from all windows of this cute little cabin. We loved waking up to the gorgeous fall foliage greeting us as it stood tall on the beautiful NC mountains! The hot tub was fantastic as we star gazed. We enjoyed the Woolly Worm festival, Mast General Store, Grandfather Mountain but MOSTLY this cabin and nature of the NC mountains.

Manager response: Thank you for sharing your comments. We're glad you enjoyed your stay and hope you will visit again!
Found this nice cabin at the last minute. proved to be a nice experience. The view is good if not great (only because the property's trees obstruct what can be a really awesome view). Spider webs inside the cabin in a couple of places was a bit surprising. The setting is private enough, and the sound of the birds chirping is only disturbed by the frequent/occasional cars that drive by some 100 or 200 feet away. We had mentioned that we would check in late, and the manager had assured us that some of the lights would be turned on by the time we arrived. However, when we arrived around 10:30p we were invited by pitch darkness and after a bit of fumbling in total darkness we were able to get in. Perhaps the lights have a timer and it had switched off ..may be. The entrance has a steep slope and one would need to take adequate care during winter months.

Manager response: I'm glad you enjoyed your stay and that we could accommodate you on short notice. Privacy at the cabin is enhanced by the surrounding woods. The trees, which are shown in the video posted on VRBO of the view, were pruned to open the line of sight to that vista. They are hemlocks which are becoming less common in the NC mountain forests and are part of the character of my cabin in the woods. After every guest the cabin is cleaned and I asked my property manager to make sure the maid inspects for cobwebs before she leaves based on your comment. It has not been a problem in the past, but the cabin is in a natural rustic setting. Frankly, I'm puzzled by the issue with the lights. There is a pole light outside that works dusk-to-dawn when the switch is "on". In addition, there are porch lights which are turned on for guests who plan to arrive late. Inside the cabin there is an automatic motion sensor light. My property manager usually turns on a lamp in the family room when she inspects the cabin before each arrival if she knows they will come in after dark. With the cabin in a secluded wooded setting, I know how dark the surroundings can be at night without lights! We will check all the light bulbs and replace as needed. I am sorry for any inconvenience you experienced in that regard. As you noted, there is some vehicle noise from the road which is located well below the cabin. The weekend you stayed was ASU Homecoming as well as during the peak color leaf season so there may have been more traffic than usual. The benefit of being near the highway is easy well-maintained access to the driveway in all seasons. Thank you for your feedback.
A wonderful, quiet get away!
A wonderful, quiet get away!
This cabin was perfect for a weekend get away. We met another couple there and had a quiet, relaxing, beautiful weekend. It was unseasonably warm that weekend, but with the windows open and fans going it was the perfect environment. The hot tub was great and the view is out of this world. It is very conviently located to different tourist things, but also so private and secluded that you don't even need to leave if you don't want to. I will definitely be booking this cabin again! Also, the driveway is pretty steep. We were fine in the summer, but I can definitely see needing chains in the winter.
