On the second floor (no elevator/lift) at the back of the house overlooking gardens of birch trees, this apartment has a large (18' X 22') main room, an eat-in, well equipped, windowed kitchen, and a generous bathroom with a floor length window.
The kitchen has a 4 chair dining table, while the living/dining room has its own six chair formal dining table, Murphy bed, sofa and armchairs.
A closet area off the living /dining room towards the middle of the building houses the second Murphy bed, a dresser and clothes hangers that can be closed off by two massive original sliding doors.
The apartment has its own Wifi internet connection and satellite DirecTV servicing a 34' TV screen.
The house: The building itself, an1895 Brownstone five-story jewel, is located right on the cross town bus route, between the two subway lines serving the West side of Manhattan. The close subway and bus access means that the rest of the City - MOMA, Lincoln Center, the Empire State building, United Nations, Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and the Theater District, for starters, are just a few minutes away. It’s across Columbus Avenue from the new Planetarium and the old Museum of Natural History. Being a block from Central Park means that a few minutes walk gets you to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the other Museum Mile occupants on Fifth Avenue.
Eating and drinking: Going the other way out the door gets you to Zabar’s famous delicatessen and, down Broadway a bit, Fairway supermarket with its extensive fish, meat and fruit and vegetable markets. Good wine stores are common. For non-cookers, the sheer number and ethnic variety of restaurants within only a few blocks is huge.

My house is a five-story,1892 townhouse on the Upper West Side of Manhattan that I bought 44 years ago. I had the ornate brownstone facade restored recently. It has eight apartments in it (I occupy the garden apartment), two of which I rent out as short term vacation homes. The house is part of a neighborhood of townhouses on the side streets, larger multiple dwellings on the avenues, occasional grand apartment buildings on Central Park West, and some notable institutions such as the Museum of Natural History and Lincoln Center dotted around the neighborhood. The area is well served by buses and subways, with a high population of restaurants of many different ethnicities and varying levels of sophistication. No area in Manhattan - be it the Theater District or the Village - is far away in time or difficult to reach.
Year Purchased: 1969
About the owner: I like renovating old buildings and this one is a jewel.
Why the Owner Chose Upper West Side: My parents were in the diplomatic service, so I was bounced around the world every two years. I wanted to settle down after Columbia College, so I bought this house.
Speaks: french, spanish, english
