Our home sits on the side of a mountain about 3.2 miles east of Red River, but is easy to get to and only about 4-5 minutes from town by car. Except for one other house about 40 yards away, it has the 'feel' of being alone on the mountainside. You can see a neighborhood of other houses across the highway, but they don't spoil your views. The house sits in a clearing, so the forest doesn't block your views of peaks, passes, and forest either. You may see deer or even elk walk through the property. You can see Highway 38 in the valley below the house, so it's not so far away as to make accessibility a problem, but far enough to give you privacy. In this house, you get the feel of 'living in' the mountains instead of just visiting or staying in a hotel in town. NOTE: We must ask that you don't rent our home from mid Nov. through mid April without 4-wheel drive. With 4-wheel drive it's a snap, no problem, but without it the snow will make you unable to climb the gentle grade of our little road. You WILL get stuck in the snow and we won't be in town to pull you out. You'll be unhappy, and we want your stay to be nothing but fun.. There's a good sized deck on front of the house (off the living-dining area) and a small deck in back (off the two upstairs bedrooms.) We lived here for 7 years, so the house has everything you need: full kitchen, washer/dryer, 1.75 baths. Downstairs bath has a whirlpool tub with shower over. (Please be sure water covers the jets on the tub before you turn them on.) Upstairs bath has a large, comfortable shower. We provide linens, pillows, quilts, towels and wash cloths. 2 BRs have king beds, one has a queen. There's a set of twin bunkbeds on the loft and the futon in the Living Room makes a double bed, so we figure the house sleeps 6 adults + 4 kids. There's a 2 stall barn & 2 fenced pastures. You'll have to run hoses from the house to water the horses. LR has a gas FP,so no need to gather wood. 2 flat screen TVs on satellite, one in LR, one in MBR , DVD & VHS player in LR with some DVD and VHS movies available. Satellite wi-fi internet (slow, but the fastest we can get at our location.). Fenced yard for dogs (up to 2 reasonably sized dogs.) NO SMOKING Also, please be aware of fire danger level set from time to time by the National Forest. . Table seats 6, bar stools seat 3, and there are 4 TV trays. NOTE' Garage will be locked and unavailable to you, but you don't need it up here. It never hails big enough to damage a car. One other note--there are no chain restauranats in Red River-no Burger King, no McDonalds. During 'on' season (summer and ski season) you can probably find a restaurant till about 9 p.m. but the grocery store may close at 8:00. In off season you may not find a place to eat and the grocery store may be closed after 7:00 p.m., so make your supper plans accordingly. Just a friendly reminder learned by experience. When you book the house, email us for directions to the house that you can print and info about how to obtain keys. Add 8.4375% tax for the government on the rental rate, and we charge a $100 cleaning fee per visit. To get that rate for a cleaning fee in Red River, we must ask that you take your bagged trash to a dumpster in town and put all dirty dishes in the dishwasher when your visit is over. An additional $25 will be charged to your card if you don't. Thanks in advance for working with us on this issue. We have loved living in the house and believe you will love relaxing there.
Maximum of two reasonably sized dogs is fine. Please keep them outside in yard as much as possible. No cats, birds or other, except there is a two horse barn and we would allow up to 6 horses total if they can get along with each other in two pasture enclosures. Credit card will be charged for pet damage to the house, barn, or fence....moreless

Red River began as a gold mining community and still has the feel of a small mountain town. Ski lifts begin right in town; there's no long drive up a mountain; the lift to the top of the mountain also runs in summer for sight seeing. The town is surrounded by Carson National Forest, a mountainous region of fir, spruce, Ponderosa Pine, and Aspen. Wheeler Peak, the highest point in New Mexico (over 12,000 feet,) and the Wheeler Peak Wilderness, are just a few miles south. Two other downhill ski areas, Angelfire and Taos Ski Valley, are about 35 minutes and an hour away, respectively. The area is well known for trout fishing, both in lakes and ponds and streams and rivers. The Forest holds one of the largest elk herds in the U.S., and hunters come here from all over the U.S. The house is about a half mile from Bobcat Pass Adventures, where there's horseback riding in the mountains, four wheeling, snowmobiling, and the Cowboy Evening Dinner in the summer. About 45 minutes away, in Taos, is the casino offering slots, craps, and table games. Right across the highway is the Enchanted Forest cross country skiing and snowshoe area, which is also a great place to ride horses in the summer. Drive to Taos, an hour away, for river and whitewater rafting on the Rio Grande river. Drive the Enchanted Circle, from Red River to Questa, Taos, Angelfire, Eagle Nest and back just for the beautiful views and many activities offered by the area. Hike, 4-wheel, mountain bike, bird watch (including hummingbirds that will sit on your hand to get to the feeder if you're very still,) fish, and ski all within minutes of the house. Shop Red River, or go to Taos for the art galleries, craft shops, and shops offering goods made in Mexico. Go to the Wild Rivers area 15 miles away and hike down the Rio Grande Gorge to where the Red River converges into the Rio Grande. Rent a Jeep and drive to Goose Lake on Gold Mountain, or to the top of Greenie Peak for spectacular views. Rock climb in Questa or at the Palisades in Cimarron Pass. Go to one of Red River's many festivals during the year, including Mardi Gras in the Mountains, the Memorial Day Harley Run, the classic car show, wine and art festival, blues and brews, 4th of July parade, Aspencade in September, Octoberfest, and others.

About the owner: We are the owners, not a property manager. We are retired and have lived in this home for 7 years, moving here from Amarillo, Tx, and are now going to relocate but want to keep this house to visit the people and things we love in Red River.
Why the Owner Chose Red River: Originally bought the house as a vacation home (moved here permanently later.) Always loved the mountains and was looking for a mountain property in Colorado, but came to Red River with a friend to ride horses in the Valle Vidal, and was completely hooked on the area. In the Vidal you can ride 2 hours and not see anything made by man, and when you do it's a hundred years old. Of course that's not true of Red River itself, or this house. Once convinced that I wanted a place in Red River, we wanted a place we could bring and keep our horses-something that's almost non-existent around Red River because of lot sizes and deed restrictions. Found this one. It also provided most of what I love about being in the mountains-views, smells, etc. You won't get the views and the feel of 'living in the mountains' in town that you do in this house. It is fairly private and very quiet, but only a 4 minute drive from all the amenities of Red River. Other than one other house about 30 yards away, we're almost alone on our side of the mountain. Don't know of any other place around Red River where you can keep your horses right on the property with you. Deer and sometimes elk often graze across the property. This house lets you feel like you live in the mountains, not just rent there.
The Unique Benefits at this House: We love being out of town, but only 4 minutes away. We have better beautiful views and see more wildlife that was, plus we can keep horses on the property, a very rare thing around Red River because most places are subdivided into 1/2 acre lots with deed restrictions against horses. The 'suspended half log staircase' is very eye catching, and just sitting on the deck watching the hummingbirds is very relaxing.
