Everything was just right!
Our family has rented a number of vacation rental homes, both in the US and abroad. Usually, there comes a point in our stay when one of us says, "it would really be nice if this house had a ______." Not this time. There isn't a thing about the home that I would change. The home itself is clean, roomy and comfortable, perfect for our family of five. It is clear that the owners have put much thought into creating a relaxing rental experience, from their design of the house to their selection of environmentally friendly cleaning products. The location was perfect for us in all respects. The home is surrounded by woods, and is within walking distance of some great hiking trails, the sound, and shops and restaurants in SW Harbor. (I do not know why anyone would choose to stay in Bar Harbor instead of SW Harbor unless their primary activity is visiting t-shirt shops.) To keep this review brief, I will say "ditto" as to all of the glowing reviews of the home, and add that I doubt that one could find a better value in a rental home on Mount Desert Island. We would definitely stay here again. Well done!

My husband and I have rented this house for a week every summer for the past 5 years. There are so many good things including the beauty of the land and the quietness of the area. If you are ever looking for quiet time away from the hectic noise of life - this is the place. It has every appliance you need for cooking in and a washer and dryer. The livingroom is very comfortable. We loved sitting on the wrap around deck every morning and watching the hummingbirds right above us. When we first arrived there we were greeted by 2 beautiful deer - just walking up the driveway. The house is very clean and comfortable. Upstairs there is space to get away for some alone time or for the kids to play with their games, read or do puzzles. There is plenty of space in the house for all. The kitchen has a nice dining table to one side and in the middle of the kitchen there is another dining area. The back woods are great for walking or for the kids to explore. We loved to walk to Flying Mountain which was a short distance from the house. We hiked the mountain and when we reached the top there were spectacular views. We enjoyed walking to the center of town and had lunch and delicious ice cream and baked goods. The people in SouthWest Harbor are so friendly and there are many great shops to find treasures to take home. The first night we were there we went out on the deck and saw what seemed like millions of stars in the sky and we had never seen them that bright before. We went out every night on the deck and put a blanket down and laid on the blanket and watched the stars. It took our breath away. The other good thing about SouthWest Harbor is that all the other towns on Mt. Dessert Island are within driving distance or you can take the free bus that goes all around the island. We went to Bar Harbor, Northeast Harbor; and Bass Harbor to see the Light House and have great fish on the pier. One sunny afternoon we took the free bus to Northeast Harbor and went out on a Nature Cruise for the afternoon. We saw an eagles nest with 2 eagles sitting in it. We went out further and came to a place where there were about 25 seals laying on the rocks and jumping into the water. That was really cool. At night we went to Thurstons Lobster that is on the water. Delicious lobster and corn on the cob. Bar Harbor had many activities including music on the green. That was fun for adults and kids. We loved SouthWest Harbor and this rental is a great find.

The pictures don't do this place justice. The cottage is so charming with lots of nice touches like games, a compost bin and Eco-friendly cleaning products. We took lots of walks and hikes without having to drive anywhere. And They weren't kidding about the stars, simply breadth taking. A real delight of a rental, we will definitely come back.

Peaceful Secluded Hideaway
Peaceful Secluded Hideaway
My son, boyfriend and dog Bo enjoyed our stay here on the quieter side of MDI. The peaceful secluded setting was the next best thing to the ocean views. The price was right in our budget. The house was cozy and had everything we needed to help lighten the packing load from home.

Wonderful escape in the woods
Wonderful escape in the woods
Our whole family really enjoyed our stay at Cedar View. The house feels spacious from the inside (it looks small in the pictures) as the large windows cover one entire side of the living room/kitchen/dining area and more windows look out the adjoining side on the beautiful trees. The house was well made and we enjoyed looking at the pictures of the construction process which occurred about 10 years ago. The interior knotty pine walls remind you that you’re not at home, but in the Maine woods. It was wonderful drinking coffee on the deck early in the day and relaxing in the evening looking into the woods. Our girls, ages 12 and 15, liked exploring the “back yard” as there is a well worn path that goes through the beautiful moss covered woods. The house was clean, comfortable, and included some little touches that I appreciated: books for all different aged children and adults, games, a few cookbooks, a well stocked kitchen (including a rolling pin and pie pan!) and some eco-friendly touches like glycerin soups, cloth napkins and tablecloths, and a covered container in the kitchen for composting. We appreciated the information binder (grocery store locations-one very close, etc.) and we also used the Acadia Hiking Trail book (and left it there for the next guests). Our girls liked having their own space on the second floor with their own bathroom and we liked having our bedroom with the walkout to the deck. The owners were friendly and very easy to work and the lease was in plain English and contained no unusual requirements. We brought our dog (a Sheltie) and she enjoyed our walks down to Fernald Cove where we saw numerous Great Blue Herons and other birds. Flying Mountain Trail is very close to the house and is one of our favorite hikes. Having internet access is great for checking out fun things to do on rainy days and check hours of restaurants, etc. We had a great breakfast at the Seabiscuit Cafe in Southwest Harbor and the kids want to return to the Gilley Museum to take a class on woodcarving birds. We were a short drive to Seawall Campsite and loved the evening ranger programs (free). We also went on some daytime ranger programs that were fantastic. We like renting a house as we can easily make our meals-saving money and time. We are looking forward to coming back to Cedar View for future vacations and highly recommend it to couples or families looking for peace and quiet in the woods at a very reasonable price.

About the owner: We built Cedar View together, by hand, before our kids were born. We put in every nail and board - it was a labor of love and will forever remain a wonderful memory. We moved up the hill a ways not long after our youngest was born. The cottage became an office space for Sig's engineering design work until this year when we were able to make him a home office. In addition to doing engineering, Sig plays in a local band and has his boat captains license. Anna is also an engineer and teaches physics and sustainable energy at the local college. Axel is 10 and Janey is 7 and both love to play in the woods, build forts and sail. Our golden retriever is 14 and is named after one of the descendants of the Carroll Family who left a large amount of land and the Carroll Homestead to Acadia National Park.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
Star Gazing and listening to the many sounds of the woods while sitting on the porch and catching distant glimpses of the light out on Baker Island is just about as relaxing as you can get.
