Big Sur house description

Only god can make a tree. Probably because it's so hard to get the bark on. Woody Allen.

Sweet dreams are made of this...
Who am I to disagree?
Travel the world and the seven seas,
Everybody's looking for something.
The Eurythmics

The Littlehouse is located less than 10 minutes off of Highway One, and is accessible by a good road in all seasons. It is situated in a redwood forest in a canyon along a tumbling stream. Pleasantly isolated, it enjoys sunny days and cool nights. Its amenities, delightful furnishings, full kitchen, gas fireplace, luxurious bed and bath, generous closet area, private deck, are appropriate for either short or long term visits. Coastal and forest hiking trails and scenic beaches are nearby. Carmel with its delightful shops and many restaurants is a short drive away as is the Big Sur Village, Nepenthe and Pfeiffer Beach . Simply a delight.

Marketing these days is too much with us. Flowery modifiers, lyrically poetic descriptions, vivid adjectives wash over us all day, everyday. I can't take it. Just know that the LittleHouse is a special lodging in a beautiful place.

Littlehouse in the Redwoods was every bit as perfect as described in the listing and more! The house is beautiful, modern and very well-appointed. We chose to eat our dinners in and had everything we needed - from pots/pans, utensils, cooking oils, spices, etc. The scenery is gorgeous and really felt like we had our own little piece of heaven in the Redwoods for the weekend. The owners are very accommodating (but also respectful of your privacy) and a great resource for suggestions on what to do in the area (dining out, hiking, shopping, etc.). They even supply you with a welcome binder with lots of information on activities in the area as well as the makings for a very satisfying breakfast for the next day. How great is that?! What a wonderful way to decompress for a weekend with enough nearby to do as much or as little as you wish. I only wish we had stayed a couple more days. We will definitely return and would definitely recommend Littlehouse to anyone who is looking for a relaxing stay in the Big Sur/Carmel area.

Before we arrived at the Littlehouse for the first portion of our Honeymoon the owners were supremely accomodating with directions and recommendations in the area. The house is beautiful and very well maintained. The owners were both generous (wine, breakfast items and even a special bottle of champagne to celebrate our wedding were provided) and respectful of privacy. They gave us everything we needed including freedom to roam. If you are looking for a quiet retreat, I can think of few places better. The winding portion of Highway One that passes through Big Sur and Carmel is a beautiful drive and never seems to get old. The littlehouse is accessed via a small road that disappears into the canyon. It takes about 10 minutes to get from the house to the highway. You’re really tucked away so you get a real experience of both the ocean and the Red Woods. Don’t miss Nepenthe. From the house it’s probably a 30 minute drive toward Big Sur just past Pfeiffer Beach. Beautiful food and atmosphere. Go at sunset.

We spent hours trying to figure out where to stay in Big Sur for our honeymoon, We knew it would only happen once so we really wanted to feel like we were both not overspending and also staying in a place that we would love to remember forever. And LittleHouse did not disappoint. Jerry was very welcoming from day 1 and they have built a perfect getaway. It's a little off hwy 1 (15 minute drive and some of that is a dirt road) and a little north of Big Sur proper, but its proximity to Rocky Point (where you should grab lunches at least. We had a lunch, a stop in for a glass of wine, and a dinner there) make it close to the luxury it feels you are bathing in while you are staying in. LittleHouse is seriously the nicest place for the money you could possibly find in Big Sur. Our only hesitation in writing our glowing review was that we want the availability to be open for ourselves for whenever we want! We are already planning out next trip and have had discussions about making it annual thing. And I have no doubt that we could never find anything better. We absolutely love Big Sur, but there just really isn't a lot of affordable luxury there. You either have Fernwood on the low end or Ventana and the Post Ranch Inn. The only thing close to price-wise is Glen Oaks, and all you get is a hotel room. Beyond simply cost, LittleHouse is just beautiful. It's the perfect use of space, and feels much larger than it is because of how efficiently it is laid out and designed. The furnishings are superb. The kitchen is perfect. It feels like home, except we were in the middle of a lush redwood forest with a nearby stream. It is a gorgeous place and the perfect place for a couple in love. Believe me, we took our choice of honeymoon destinations very very seriously and LittleHouse far exceeded the very high expectations we had set for it. It is true gem, I dare you to find a better deal in Big Sur. It's just not possible.

Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, romantic getaway.

From the moment we stepped inside Littlehouse and I glimpsed a fresh, fragrant flower arrangement – clearly hand-picked and arranged with a loving hand – springing out of a vase just inside the door, I knew we had chosen our getaway wisely. Everything about this home-away-from-home has been executed with care, taste, and the needs of its visitors in mind. The owner-builder, Gary, is as open-hearted and interesting as his work might suggest: he makes 500 square feet feel like all you'll ever need in life. We didn't get to meet his wife, but her creative handiwork, too, is everywhere. The place is immaculate. From the cast iron pot of fresh eggs to the bowl of fruit and little jar of preserves, the breakfast provided was as pleasing to the eyes as it was delicious. The setting is breath-taking: you fall asleep in a fabulous bed to the murmuring song of a stream just outside the window, and wake up to a skylight view of towering redwoods. The surroundings are inspiring: You are close to winding rocky coastlines, beach and forest hikes, great restaurants just north or south of you, and you are about as far from urban stress as is possible. My boyfriend gave me a Big Sur long weekend as a birthday present last October. It took us ten months to get here, and little did I know he would wind up asking me to marry him here! I couldn't imagine a lovelier spot to make such a commitment, and hope to return for many years to come to celebrate together. I highly highly recommend this, but try to arrive during daylight – the final few miles to Littlehouse are deep in the forest, and with no cell service, and finding it can be tricky! Still, nothing worthwhile comes without some effort, and this place is truly a slice of heaven, well worth the trek.

After almost too much traveling this summer, this little tree house was the final summer destination... and as accommodations are concerned, the absolute best. Clean, organized, tasteful and masterfully built (by the owner). I rented two vacation rentals in France, both paled in comparison to the cleanliness, quality and attention to detail here. We had four days enjoying this perfect romantic spot for two. We wish the Littlehouse in the Redwoods was ours!

My partner and I stayed at the Littlehouse for two nights in early August, and it was absolutely fantastic. The property is about three miles into the redwoods, which allowed for a private and quiet weekend retreat. Littlehouse is also spotless--from the kitchen to the bedroom to the bathroom to the outdoor space--everything was clean, organized and convenient. We cooked several meals in the kitchen where there were plenty of tools, spices, utensils, etc. The bedroom and bathroom area are on the second story of the cabin where there is also a private walk-out patio above a stream--perfect for morning coffee and afternoon wine. Next time we will stay for more than two nights :)

My husband and I stayed here for our anniversary and had the absolute best time! We wanted a peaceful, quiet, and quaint place and that's exactly what we got. The home was full of those 'little things' that show the owners care and the cabin was beautifully decorated and modern. There are a ton of steps to get to the cabin, but we looked at it as a forced workout so we didn't mind at all. The owners were also very nice and helpful. The home is a little out-of-the-way, but not too far from Carmel's town/beach or Big Sur's town/beach. We went horseback riding in Big Sur and rode along the coast as well as shopped and had lunch in Carmel's charming little town. We will definitely be back!!! This may actually become an every-anniversary place for us!

This review has been long due but our memories are still fresh. This place provides excellent value over other chain hotels and rest assured you will have a good time. Looking forward to our next stay when that happens. Here's a break down: Amenities: Fully equipped kitchen to make a small meal. I still marvel at the engineering in fitting all the modern gadgets in a remote place deep in the forest. No issues with the bathroom. We had a cozy, comfortable stay. Interiors: Tastefully and professionally done. My wife and i were betting that it was done by a professional architects. Upon talking to Gary the owner we learnt that i was put together by him and his wife over years. My wife is planning to "steal" some ideas from them :) Surroundings: Nestled in the forests, surrounded by redwood trees with a small stream flowing by. Its location is modern and yet rustic. For those who don't like to camp in wilderness but yet want to enjoy nature this is it. Approach: Would recommend scouting this place while there is day light. The last 2 miles are on dirt single lane roads. The 2-wheel drive car that we rented was sufficient. Of course the car did get muddy. Hosts: It was wonderful talking to Gary. Upon arrival, he showed us around the apartment. We spoke to him during our checkout and had a great time talking to him on his travel experiences and the history of the "little house"

We were very pleased with this property as well as the owners, who were very friendly and accommodating. House was spotless and very cozy with a modern kitchen and beautifully designed interior. Comfortably sized bedroom with a balcony overlooking the woods and the brook below that we loved falling asleep listening to every night. Good location to drive to Carmel, Monterey and to visit local sights like Point Sur Lighthouse and the state parks down the coast- all within a 30 minute ride or less. A great getaway that will enchant and leave you with some wonderful memories! LGBT friendly as well.

Tucked away in a redwood canyon up among the redwoods, the little house is a piece of art! The architecture, attention to detail makes you feel like you are in a 5 star hotel. Surrounded by the redwoods and only the sound of a stream is mesmerizing. The owners were so helpful, even calling from town to see if we needed anything. Sitting on the balcony eating breakfast or reading a book makes you forget about the frenzy of daily life. Be sure to visit Point lobos and see whales, otters, and seals. Have lunch by the river in Big sur and have a glass of wine at the Post Ranch Inn where we saw 5 whales below thru the clear water. If you like nature and relaxation you could not find a better place. Thanks Jerry and Maureen- we look forward to returning.
