Property description

Home is set on spacious lawn, with several flower beds, and possibly some vegetables free for the taking (if weather and wild animals permit). Road is dead-end and dirt, neighbors are quiet, gracious and helpful. Public transport available from in-town locations to nearby towns, and free bus service can be used touring Acadia National Park.

Outdoor activities range from hiking, golfing, mountain climbing (small mountains), flying out of Bar Harbor airport on tour of area or in a glider, fishing, canoeing/kayaking/sailing, swimming, biking, horseback riding, nature walks, whale watching trips, exploring off-shore islands, attending festivals, concerts, and maybe even checking out the water park nearby.

Indoor activities can include visiting galleries, shops, plays, museums, ice cream parlors and restaurants, cinemas, historic sites, and even a winery or two within 50 miles. There are also some micro-brewery places open for tours and tastings.

Or sit on the patio and watch for eagles, osprey, seals, kingfisher, blue herons, hawks and owls as well as the songbirds and various mammals that might pay a visit (deer like the veggies and some of the flowers, porcupines climb the trees, raccoons, groundhogs and rabbits check out the offerings in the lawn)

Rainy days can be spent inside playing games, reading, watching a movie if going outdoor is not on the agenda. RedBox is available in local grocery stores, for DVDs.

Phone is for local calls only, but incoming calls can be received and calling cards with access to supplier may be used. Manager lives within a few houses of this home and will provide key access as well as help with any problems.

Professional artist stayed here for three months and has said the photos do not do justice to the sense of peace and quiet as well as the subtle beauty of the area.

Car: Necessary

***located on dead-end, dirt road with rural feel, but only 4 miles from center of town (which is also county seat), quiet, sunny

***watch eagles, blue herons, various ducks, and seals and find wild turkeys, deer, porcupine and raccoon in yard, maybe even a partridge or two as well song birds

***enjoy all that Acadia National Park has to offer, as well as browsing shops, pathways, and activities on Mt Desert Island

***treat yourself to a play in Somesville or Bangor, art festival in Bar Harbor as well as surrounding towns, have a lobster feed on the pier in Southwest Harbor, travel the byways in Pretty Marsh, check out the galleries in Northeast, have tea and popovers at Jordan Pond House, rent a bike and travel the carriage roads in the park, check out the museums and galleries on the mainland and explore the towns all along the coast both south and north, visit the bridge over the Penobscot in Bucksport and tour Fort Knox.

***or maybe just sit on the patio with a glass of wine, some cheese, fruit and crackers and enjoy the sounds and smells of tides running in and out of the mouth of the river. You might even want to put your kayak or canoe in the water and take a trip to town by water. If you are very quiet, a seal might come right along with you for a way, but remember to put in and out at high tide, otherwise the mud will try to keep your footwear as you climb in or out.

***don't forget to visit College of Atlantic and Jackson lab in Bar Harbor, as well as the historic sites around Mt Desert Island, including at least one boat trip around the island, or to visit one of the other off-shore islands.

***free band concerts mid-week in town, and several musical venues in surrounding towns

***free WiFi at Maine Grind, a coffee shop in old Masonic Hall - and check out the gift shop displaying local artists' work. Library also has WiFi access and is located beside the river. There is even a picnic bench to use for a luncheon party.

***tour the old jail house, then check out the antique / old stuff / consignment shops for a momento of your time here on the coast.

Overlooking river and bay.

Owner info

Year Purchased: 1974

About the owner: I grew up in NJ, attended college in Maine and discovered this state's coastline and it became my home by choice. After graduation, I was fortunate enough to acquire a job at Jackson lab in Bar Harbor, thus giving me an opportunity to live where I wanted to be. While I was not always able to live in my home, I was able to keep it by working out of state. I am now renting it while I spend time with friends in Minnesota.

Why the Owner Chose Ellsworth:
feeling of peace, while at the same time close to amenities, library, alternative radio station, airports, colleges, national park as well as preserves for wildlife, influx of visitors from many areas of the world in the summer, and of course, the seafood!

The Unique Benefits at this House:
quiet - great neighbors - dead-end road - river view and trees
