Ten minutes from the base of Whiteface Mountain, in the quaint and historic community of Jay, NY, you will find our vacation rental property affectionately called “The Nest”. It is located on a hillside overlooking the Jay Range just off RT 9N and is surrounded by beautiful gardens and our wine vineyard. We call it the nest because it has the cozy feeling of just that…a nest that you may rest and get the well-deserved break that you may be seeking. A ten minute walk, you will find the historic covered bridge, crossing the beautiful Ausable River, with its natural rock water slides and swimming holes. A 2 minute drive down to the village deli will offer you the best Cheddar cheese in the Adirondacks, while another ten minutes will bring you to the famous Whiteface Mountain. There you may take a leisurely gondola ride to the top of little Whiteface for breathtaking views of the high peaks or hop on your mountain bike in the summer. Winter will offer skiing and snowboarding down snow covered trails where Olympians have ventured! In the opposite direction, 15 minutes away is the Verizon Sports complex where athletes race 90 miles an hour on a speeding luge and skeleton sleds and where you too can experience the “Champaign of Thrills”, otherwise known as a bobsled ride or just watch if you are faint of heart! Ride to the top of the 90 meter ski jump or take guided tour at the Olympic arena. View the ice rink where the magic of the miracle on ice occurred! Close your eyes and imagine the energy the night when the US hockey team beat the Russians on that historic winter night back in 1980! Whether you visit in the summer or the winter there is fun and adventure to be had! If you love to fish and hike, you are minutes away from blue ribbon streams and lakes as well as close proximity to the major trail heads. In the summer months the Village Green here in Jay, is alive with music every Saturday night. Bring your lawn chair and your favorite beverage and enjoy a night of music! The Olympic village of Lake Placid is a short 25 minute scenic drive where you will find more activities and great dining experiences! Enjoy 5- star dining in Lake Placid’s finest, or if casual dining is what you enjoy there are many options as well! Shopping is also plentiful on Main Street. Just minutes away from the Nest, in Wilmington you will also find great options for dining, whether you are looking for steak or seafood, a burger, pizza or wings!! As you can see you will not be bored when you visit unless of course you choose to be!
The Nest is located in the private, lower level of our home completely equipped with all that you will need for your vacation enjoyment. A fully equipped kitchen will allow you to dine in if you would like. In the summer the Nest is cooled naturally and warmed in the winter by a propane fired soap stone stove that adds to the cozy nature of The Nest.
It is a perfect getaway for 2 and can accommodate up to 4 with a pull out sofa. The views from the nest are hard to beat! The Jay range will greet you every morning along with the birds, beauty of gardens and a vineyard that surround you in the summer and the sparkling frost upon the mountains in the winter. There is a porch where you can eat a meal or have your morning coffee.
We hope you will come for a visit and let the stresses of life melt off you in the town we love, Jay, NY!

We had a wonderful stay with Tom and Lisa. They are wonderful hosts, very accommodating and friendly and are a wealth of local knowledge. The apartment is as advertised, clean, well appointed, comfortable, and more spacious than we were expecting. Views from inside and the front porch are perfect. We'll certainly stay again.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

For anyone looking to explore the High Peaks region of the Adirondacks, it would be tough to beat Tom and Lisa's cozy nook. We were greeted with a nice bottle of wine, which was very welcome after the drive through a big snowstorm. The snowfall was just what we had hoped for, and we made the most of it, as our hosts were able to inform us (they know the region quite well) of cross-country ski trails just a few miles from their house, and we headed out that evening for a dusk-into-night ski along the icy and beautiful Ausable river. Tom and Lisa's place is right at the crossroads of the road (86) that heads over to Whiteface Mountain, so even after that bottle of wine had gone to bed empty, we were at the chairlift when it started running the following day. It was a legitimately epic day on the ski slopes, and for those east coast skiers who haven't made the journey, Whiteface has some outstanding terrain, and it is pretty cool to be shussing by the old Olympic infrastructure which the ski hill has retained. Lake Placid is quite touristy, which is good from the point of view of restaurants (the wienershnitzel at the Lake Placid brewpub is recommended) but also reminded us of why we were happy to be staying out of town, away from the throngs of visitors and the motel signs and nearer the snow covered pines. The following day we drove out to the Adirondack Lodge, again quite close, where they rent cross-country skis and snowshoes, and went deep into the National Park on our Alpine Touring skis, ascending a high peak and then skiing down. We were happy to meet a number of fellow backcountry enthusiasts along the trail, and the weekend was truly an excellent adventure, all thanks to Lisa and Tom's wonderful little 'nest.' As for the accommodations themselves, they were the picture of coziness and cleanliness, with a spacious bathroom for the needed hot showers and a fully equipped kitchen to whip up some sausage and eggs before the morning's activities. The bedding was comfortable, and the pull-out couch is better than most, to which I can personally attest. There is a nice gas fireplace to take away the nip, and some good armchairs that cry out for a book. And the price! Very reasonable. If outdoor exploring is your thing, but you enjoy a hot shower and a shave in the morning, than look no further.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: It was a pleasure to share our little piece of paradise with you and all of our travelers! Thank you for your kind words! We think it is very special and we enjoy sharing it with our wonderful guests!!

This accommodation exceeded all our expectations; the location was great (within 15min of the slopes and 25min of Lake Placid), and while it was conveniently located off Rte 9N, it was not right off the road and was a true haven. The nest was clean, well furnished, much bigger than expected and comfortable for 4. Lisa was such a welcoming host and made us feel right at home from the get-go when we arrived to beds freshly made and as she regularly checked in to make sure we had everything we needed. We would absolutely recommend it to anyone looking for a great value accommodation in the Adirondacks!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, tourists without a car, romantic getaway.

This property is even more wonderful than it appears to be in photos! Lisa is an incredible, conscientious host and takes such special care of her guests! The property is cozy, clean and the perfect mountain getaway. The only thing lacking was toiletries (soap, shampoo, etc.), but otherwise, this accommodation could not have been more idyllic. Visit the Nest!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Tom and Lisa makes you feel like you are part of the family ! they lives upstairs, making things pretty easy if you have questions about anything, without never at anytime being intrusive. They suggest us a lot of things like LAKE PLACID PUB & BREWERY (that you should really try by the way). The place is spic-and-span and comfortable, the kitchen is well equipped an the fire place make it perfect for a great time at whiteface mountain! Can't wait to see it at summer time !Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

This is a very nice place to stay, very quiet, clean , well equiped and comfortable. The description is accurate, it is even a little bigger than we thought. Perfect for two people, it can also accomodate 2 more if necessary by using a convertible bed. The location is great: near everything (a short drive to Lake Placid, ski, hiking etc) but in a very small and quiet village. Reliable wifi is available too. Very nice region, with welcoming people everywhere (actually it looks like if they put all the unpleasant people at the customs at the border!!! ;))...,2 hours drive from Montreal where we came from. But of all the nice things we could say about the location, the nicest should be kept for the owner. Very nice, helping, discrete and interesting people, we hope we will be able to meet a little longer next time we will go! Did you find this review helpful? We were so happy to have lucked upon this little oasis at the last minute. Initially we thought about staying in Lake Placid, but the town of Jay proved to be the perfect base camp for all the wonderful things to do and see in the Adirondacks. Lisa & Tom and their Nest were a blessing to come back to at the end of the day, it was like coming home.... Make sure you check out the covered bridge and frolick in the Ausable River which is just right around the corner from the Nest, and you must drive up the Whiteface Mt Memorial HWY for breath-taking views!!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, sightseeing.

We stayed at the Nest for a night on our way up to Canada, and then another night a week later, on our way back. It was perfect for our needs. You're renting a lower floor of a house, and the owners live above. So that means you probably won't want to hang out at the pad all day - but why would you want to, anyhow? If you need a place to crash this works really well. It's very comfortable, a good bed, the view from the porch is amazing, the price is very good, and it's close to all sorts of good stuff - Lake Placid for example. We stayed at the Nest with our 1 1/2 year old and put the crib in the kitchen. The place is open design, i.e. a big studio, that was the best way of going about it, and it worked well for us. The owners were great to deal with - very friendly and accommodating.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway, sightseeing.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2005
About the owner: Tom and Lisa Smith will be your hosts for your stay. We are life time residents of the Adirondack Mountains and moved to Jay in 2005 after having lived in Lake Placid, the Olympic village all of our lives. Tom is a retired teacher of 31 years and Lisa has pursued her passions of gardening, writing, sewing and raising their 3, now adult, children.
Why the Owner Chose Jay:
When Tom and Lisa sold their home in Lake Placid and went on a search for the new spot it was love at first 'site'. We knew we wanted to build a log home and we knew we wanted peaceful, gentle living with mountain views. This was the first property we saw and we knew it was it! It had everything we were looking for and it has proven to be perfect in every way! The grounds are perfect for Lisa's many gardens and have recently become the grounds for a wine vineyard, under the supervision of our oldest son who is a somelier' The property has been fun to make ours! You will enjoy the beauty that we have created in this spot!!
The Unique Benefits at this Apartment:

The kitchen is well equipped and in the winter months you will warm yourself by a propane fired stove and be cooled in the summer by the natural cooling of the house construction. A small chiminea is outside for your evening roasting of marshmallows or just enjoying the stars and the evening air.
