It has a large master bedroom, and two luxurious guest bedrooms, 4 1/2 bathrooms, and a comfortable den/library with large flat-screen TV. The covered patio, contiguous to the living and dining room, overlooks the bullring at the back of the house and has a gas and wood fireplace and built-in BBQ, as well as seating for eight for those informal occasions.

- San Miguel de Allende is the historical and cultural center of Mexico, and is located in a state that is free from the violence that has plagued the US-Mexico border towns in recent years.. Approximately 11,000 non-Mexicans have taken up permanent residence in this magical town, including many artists and writers. The historical Centro district of San Miguel has been designated a World Heritage site by UNESCO, and the street on which Casa Sevilla is located is in fact the oldest street in the town. There is a full slate of world class cultural activities and festivals to choose from, in both English and Spanish. There are well over a 100 restaurants, and many interesting shops and markets specializing in Mexican handicrafts and art. Golf, tennis, swimming, spas, hiking, cycling are all available in San Miguel. Day tours to the main historical and shopping cities within an hour's drive (Guanjuhuato, Dolores Hidalgo and Queretaro) can be easily be arranged. An important feature of life in San Miguel is the outstanding weather year-round. The altitude here is roughly 6,400 ft above sea level, which is the reason for the temperate climate, with day time temperatures ranging from 20 C to 30 C in the daylight hours, with the coolest end of the spectrum in the winter months of January and February; night time temperatures are 10 C lower. There is very little rain, and sun prevails on almost every day....moreless

Year Purchased: 2009
About: My wife and I worked for 30 years as part of the Canadian foreign service, with various postings abroad, including as Ambassador to Brazil and Consul General to New York. We spend our summers at a lakeside cottage in Canada, and the rest of the time in San Miguel or travelling.
Why Centro Historico:
We had long been intrigued by San Miguel de Allende, having read about it over the years in various travel magazines. So, beginning in 2007, we spent two or three winter months each year in rental accommodations, prior to making the leap to build a house of our own. We purchased this property from a Mexican family that had lived many generations at this site. Unfortunately, it was necessary to completely demolish their house and start anew. So we hired one of the regions best-known architects to design and build Casa Sevilla. She ensured that the house took full advantage of the extraordinary views, and that it captured the essence of colonial Mexico whilst still incorporating all of the modern features and conveniences that make life comfortable.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
There is no doubt that the views from the covered terrace and from the roof garden are spectacular, and this is why this property appealed to us. The fact that Casa Sevilla is located on the oldest street in the town, and that our neighbors are an eclectic mixture of Americans, Canadians, Mexicans, and Italians makes it a highly desirable barrio or community. Bullfights might not appeal to everyone, but there are only about eight corridas in any given year, and in any case, you simply do not have to be a spectator if that is your choice. For those who are afficionados, and at least half of the corridas are exceptional including at least two per year with the world's best rejoneador (horse-mounted matador), then the views from the covered patio and rooftop garden terrace offer close-up and unobstructed views of the action! For the most part, the bullring is empty and simply offers a beautiful foreground for the town and country vistas beyond.
