This lovely cape is a family home located just a ten minute walk to the center of town at 71 East Main St (Please call this number if you are interested or need more infomation and want to talk about reservations, 413 634 5789- Rick thanks). It is 2 blocks from the Library and just after Boston Rd on the right hand side. It is over 100 years old with hardwood floors, Quiet and cozy with a new kitchen and king size mattress in the master bedroom. It is set back from the road 100 plus feet. Three blocks away is the local school with basketball court and large playground structure. When you think of Maine with it's rugged coastline and ocean views Vinalhaven has it all. Ideal for, bicycle riding, hiking/ exploring and swimming in the local quarries ,( the ocean is a bit cold and getting in can be a bit of a challenge, but we usualy go in ourselves at Geary's beach .
Booth Quarry is one mile from the house. You can walk or drive to reach it, and it has an area at either end for easy access to the water for small children. When you get off the Ferry ride (one hour and 15 minutes from Rockland ME) the Fisherman's co-op is right there (on your right just after leaving the ferry parking lot) if you wish to purchase Lobster's harvested that day. Pick up a copy of the Wind (a free local newspaper with current info) downtown in the stores or in the parking lot, and at the Library. The Library has Internet access, videos and story time on Saturday mornings across from the Flea market..There is broadband at the house,so bring your Laptop.
The Island is a place to relax and the phone is good for any where in the U.S. You can take a kayak tour or bring your own. There is a gym by Fisherman Freind conveinece store. The Gym has many machines for a total work out.Check out local hiking areas, and (rent bicycles at the Tidewater Motel in the center of town) or bring yours with you.
There is a deck on the back of the house and you can see Indian Creek (a view of the ocean). Have a morning coffee or grill on the deck. We have a small library of videos(VCR and dvds). The local Library is just a 5 minute walk down the street with computers/wi-fi.
The bedrooms are upstairs,1 queen,a full size, a king(new), and a small room with a single bed. The living room has a recliner and a full-size sofa (with a pull out bed). The kitchen was recently remodeled with new dishwasher, stove and refrigerator.

Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 1980
Hi I am Elizabeth Hawley I have 2 kids 12 and 17 and a husband (who manages the property for the family). My folks bought this house ,their first home at age 60 and retired on the Island after traveling abroad during their career's. My sister, nephew, and myself now own the house and enjoy going to the Island when we can. Our goal is to keep it in the family for our children. So we open it up for others to share and enjoy the refreshing change the Island and the Ocean provides.
Why the Owner Chose Vinalhaven
This was the former residence of my parents. Having traveled the world as a diplomat in the foreign service they fell in love with the island and bought the house site unseen.
The Unique Benefits of this House
Sunrises ,sunsets, beautiful views and scenery, long walks, clean refreshing ocean air, fresh lobster one of the best fishing grounds for lobster in the world shipped world wide, neighbors and friends, meeting new people, bean suppers, community events, concerts and plays,4th of July parade, diving and jumping in the quarries, finding houses and places we haven't been before,The Harbor Gawker food, and much more to name a few things we like about the Island.

This property has the potential to be great be there are a few areas that need to be fine tuned. The booking process is poorly organized. The first two checks that I mailed were lost or misplaced. I sent a third check via certified mail to insure that it was received. Upon arrival at the property, there was food in the refrigerator (an open brick of cream cheese, half an onion, ice cream) and the shower was filled with multiple bottles of shampoo/ conditioner and used bars of soap. The integrity of these items is unknown and I found their presence disturbing. The house is spacious but there was an abundance of furniture and clutter throughout the house. Vinalhaven is beautiful and the house is in a prime location; with a fine tuning of the reservation and cleaning processs this house could be a gem.
Owner response:It was unfortunate that the checks sent were lost and all efforts to remain in communication occurred. We sent a check to cover the cost of sending payment by certified check .The rentor's had not submitted a rental agreement, and we contacted them one last time to see if they were still interested. Had we not done so they would have lost their week to use the house. We have no control over what people leave behind, we request if things are left, that a note with information accompany them. The guest are responsible for removing what they brought with them and house cleaner has a short window of time to prepare for the next occupants. As far as clutter is concerned I am not sure. My first thought of things, would be the exception of coats in the front hall and books on the shelf. Two Bicycles stored in the back of the second floor bedroom which is a large space. One persons idea of neatness may differ from another. This is the first and only time we had a complaint. They intern left a full barrel of trash behind and made no effort to have it taken care of.
